Stephen King is a big 'softie,' and 'Life of Chuck' showcases his joyful side
When Flanagan adapted King's 'The Shining' sequel 'Doctor Sleep' in 2019, he screened it early for King in an empty Maine movie theater near the author's Bangor home and 'it was probably deeply uncomfortable for both of us,' Flanagan says. 'He happened to love the movie, but I was staring at him the whole time, just microanalyzing everything.'
Years later, when the writer/director made a cinematic version of King's novella 'The Life of Chuck' (in theaters nationwide June 13), Flanagan just sent him an online screening link. 'He loved it. And then kept asking to see it again,' the filmmaker recalls. 'We kept refreshing Steve's link. By the sixth or seventh time, I'm like, 'He really loves this movie.''

So much so that it led to the second time they watched a movie together, with a thousand other people for the "Chuck" premiere last year at Toronto International Film Festival. The buzzy film won the fest's prized audience award − a harbinger of Oscar consideration, considering that the past 12 winners all nabbed best picture nominations – and has earned critical acclaim (80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes).
It's also the rare King movie that, instead of a nightmare scenario, is the life-affirming tale of a seemingly ordinary accountant (Tom Hiddleston). Flanagan kept the author's unconventional three-act structure, told in reverse chronological order, that features the end of the world, an impromptu dance sequence and Chuck's formative kid years.
Usually, King's main characters are introduced having to deal with some sort of trauma, horror and/or supernatural clown. Our man Chuck comes alive one warm Thursday afternoon when the businessman hears a busking drummer.
'He puts his briefcase down and starts to move his hips to the beat of those drums,' Hiddleston says. 'And something remarkable happens and all of his interior joy explodes out of it.'
The scene expresses 'something really profound,' the actor adds, 'which is that as we get older, perhaps our lives seem to reduce, but we still contain those infinite possibilities that we understood as children.'
The dance is King's favorite: Flanagan reports that the author frequently revisits that bit during his "Chuck" viewings. At King's core, 'he's a softie that loves people,' adds Kate Siegel, Flanagan's wife, who plays Chuck's English teacher in the movie. 'He also loves to destroy you and kill off your favorite characters."
Like many of the iconic author's Constant Readers, Flanagan has watched his share of bad Stephen King movies over the years. He freely admits that 2017's 'The Dark Tower' movie was one of them. (He's working on turning King's fantasy series into a TV show.) 'When I saw 'Dreamcatcher' opening day, I was like, 'What happened?' ' he says.
A lot of filmmakers struggle to understand King's work, but Flanagan inherently gets it, as does Frank Darabont ('The Shawshank Redemption') and Rob Reiner ('Stand By Me'): 'He's not writing horror even when he is writing horror,' Flanagan says. 'He's an optimistic humanist and he's writing about love and humanity.'
For example, 'Pet Sematary' is 'the scariest book I've ever read in my life,' Flanagan says. But 'if you're making a movie about zombies coming back reanimated by a cemetery, you're making the wrong movie. If you're making a movie about how a parent could never resist the chance to save their child, then you're making the right movie.
'What always leaps out to me is, what is he really talking about here? Because if you say 'The Shining' is about a haunted hotel, and you don't say 'The Shining' is about alcoholism, you've missed it.'
King is 'someone with enormous courage in exploring corners of life that some of us might be too frightened to explore,' Hiddleston adds. But Flanagan smartly 'doesn't pigeonhole Stephen King. He sees King's breadth and range.'
Of King's more than 60 novels – plus many short stories and novellas – Mark Hamill figures he's read at least 40. (Currently, he's deep into King's 'On Writing.') For the "Star Wars" icon, who plays Chuck's grandpa Albie, the magic of King's prose is in the language.
'It's not like adjusting to the way Charles Dickens writes, or Mark Twain. He speaks the way we speak,' Hamill says. 'You're comfortable in space and time and familiar with the characters. So when things do go wonky, he already has you in his grip."
King's writing is "timeless," says "Chuck" castmate Karen Gillan. "We're all dealing with different things at different stages of life, but ultimately, he's exploring emotions that we can all connect to."
When a new King book is released, Flanagan first digs in as a fan. 'He's always been such a visual writer that inevitably there's this imaginary movie that plays in your head when you read it,' he says.
With 'Gerald's Game,' Flanagan had that movie in his head for more than a decade before making it for Netflix. 'Doctor Sleep' was 'this incredible puzzle box' where he had to weave together conflicting aspects of King's original 'Shining' narrative and Stanley Kubrick's classic movie, 'and it was nauseating every day to try to navigate it,' he says.
And after being emotionally steamrolled by his first reading of King's "Chuck" novella – to the point of "tears on my cheeks" – Flanagan's mission was simple: "Don't mess it up. It's about taking that beautiful story and just getting it up on the screen."

Spotify hit band The Velvet Sundown comes clean on AI
The Velvet Sundown burst onto the music scene in early June and in the space of just a few weeks gained an astonishing 400,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. But its bland music style, hyper-realistic band images, and lack of a digital footprint quickly led many people to suspect that the The Velvet Sundown was AI-generated. And it turns out they were right. Recommended Videos After weeks of speculation, a new message posted on its Spotify page over the weekend finally admitting that the band and its music are the work of generative AI. 'The Velvet Sundown is a synthetic music project guided by human creative direction, and composed, voiced, and visualized with the support of artificial intelligence,' the message says. It continues: 'This isn't a trick — it's a mirror. An ongoing artistic provocation designed to challenge the boundaries of authorship, identity, and the future of music itself in the age of AI. 'All characters, stories, music, voices and lyrics are original creations generated with the assistance of artificial intelligence tools employed as creative instruments. Any resemblance to actual places, events or persons — living or deceased — is purely coincidental and unintentional.' Finally, it says: 'Not quite human. Not quite machine. The Velvet Sundown lives somewhere in between.' In another bizarre twist that came just before the weekend admission, an individual going under the pseudonym 'Andrew Frelon' contacted CBC News and Rolling Stone to claim that he was the person behind the 'art hoax,' while at the same time apologizing to anyone upset by the experiment. Frelon said he created The Velvet Sundown tracks using the generative-AI tool Suno before posting them on Spotify, where the band now has more than a million monthly listeners. Case settled, then. But apparently not. The Velvet Sundown then posted a message on its Instagram page saying that Frelon 'is attempting to hijack the identity of The Velvet Sundown by releasing unauthorized interviews, publishing unrelated photos, and creating fake profiles claiming to represent us — none of which are legitimate, accurate, or connected in any way to us.' On the same day, Frelon popped up again to say that actually he had nothing to do with the band and that he'd made everything up. So, Frelon was a hoaxer, even if the band wasn't. Though was it? Finally (are you still with us at the back?), someone … not Frelon, presumably … posted another message on The Velvet Sundown's Instagram page and also its Spotify page, which we included at the start of this article, about the band being a 'synthetic music project.' Commenting on the latest message, Instagram user justminmusic highlighted the controversial issue of AI-based music generators like the one used to create The Velvet Sundown's tracks: 'They are trying to steal your 'identity' which your ai music stole from other real artist … just stop this already.' It's not clear where The Velvet Sundown will go from here. Will there be an acrimonious breakup, perhaps? Or will it drop its third album in the coming days? While many people following the fortunes of The Velvet Sundown will no doubt be saying, 'Well, we knew that from the start,' the bizarre episode has shone a spotlight on how AI can rapidly and convincingly generate not just music, but entire artist identities, blurring the line between authentic human creativity and AI-generated imitation. And as generative-AI improves, it will only become harder for music fans to tell the difference. Although arranging a live tour may prove somewhat tricky …

Coldplay fans concerned about new Rogers Stadium ahead of band's Toronto shows
Coldplay fans are gearing up to watch the band perform this week in Toronto, but some say they are concerned after mixed reviews about the concert's venue, Rogers Stadium. The new 50,000-seat open-air venue in north Toronto will host the British rock band for four performances taking place between Monday and Saturday. Maria Stracham, who is going to watch Coldplay on Tuesday and Saturday, said she was "shocked" to hear people's experiences at Rogers Stadium. "I'm trying not to dwell on all the negative aspects of the publicity that has been going around about the new stadium. I'm trying to stay positive, but I would be lying if I said that I wasn't just a little bit concerned about some of the safety aspects," Stracham told CBC News on Sunday. The concerns come after some fans who attended the stadium's inaugural concert from K-pop group Stray Kids said it took up to two hours to leave, as the venue and transit services from Downsview Park seemed ill-equipped to handle the throngs of people coming in and out of the show. Others voiced complaints on social media about long wait times leaving the stadium and hours-long journeys to catch a train, bus or Uber after the concert. Stracham said the decision to have the Coldplay concerts at Rogers Stadium doesn't make sense. "If you're visiting from out of town, there are no hotels around there. There are no restaurants, so you have to make your way back downtown. It just doesn't make a lot of sense," she said. "I don't understand why we couldn't have these shows at the Rogers Centre because it is sitting empty every night that Coldplay is playing." Many fans, like Rebecca Lukowski, who attended the inaugural concert, also complained about the venue's lack of accessibility. "They were not prepared," Lukowski told CBC on Sunday. She said the stadium was supposed to have shuttle buses to take people to the accessible parking, which was too far from the venue, but the shuttles never arrived. The lack of signage was also a concern, Lukowski said. "There was no signage on the roads. There was no signage for the accessible parking either. We drove around for almost 30 minutes,"she said. "That's very confusing, especially for someone who's out of town or might not know the area." Mel Farenzena attended the Stray Kids concert with her three daughters. They drove for seven hours from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., to Toronto. Farenzena said she waited two hours in line to refill their bottles at the water stations. She eventually gave up and bought water, which cost her almost $60 in total. "We ended up buying six waters from vendors because we had no time," she told CBC News, adding that "7 p.m. came and we were like, 'No, we're not missing this concert because of water.'" Kevin Kennedy, the owner of Kennedy Crowd Safety Solutions, said it is normal for a new venue to experience hiccups for its first event. "Not only is the crowd new to the site — so they're not familiar with how the site works, it's their first time there — but the employees on the site are also new," he said. "During an emergency, things are a little bit more chaotic, and the only thing I can say to fans in that case is follow instructions from those that are on site providing that direction because they have a bigger operational view of what's going on," he said. On Monday, Live Nation Canada responded to the concerns from concertgoers at the Stray Kids event, saying it was "already making adjustments." "We are already making adjustments based on fan and community feedback and will continue to refine our operations to ensure a positive and safe experience for everyone at Rogers Stadium and in our neighbouring community this summer — working closely with city officials, the TTC and Metrolinx, emergency services, and our community partners along the way," the concert promoter and operator said in a statement to CBC News. Concertgoers in the upper grandstands also complained that they felt their seats move during the show. Live Nation Canada said it is aware of the complaints but that it is "expected as part of the design of the venue," which "exceeds" international safety codes. WATCH | Live Nation announced the new venue in September: Coun. James Pasternak, whose ward includes the area where the stadium is located, met with Live Nation Canada, landowner Northcrest Developments and Toronto emergency services last week to discuss possible solutions. Pasternak told CBC News that there was a "really strong determination" by the teams to fix the issues raised by concertgoers. "We are hopeful that we can fix many of these problems. The onus is on Live Nation to make it happen, but we will be there to support a safe, enjoyable concert experience and make sure that people can get out and get to the venue safely and that people have a positive experience when visiting Toronto," he said. Pasternak said he expects to see some changes in place for the Coldplay concerts this week. "I would hope that access to fresh water, especially on hot summer nights, is more easily available," he said. The councillor also said police are looking into conducting some road closures in the area to accommodate crowds walking on the streets and sidewalks.
