Song satirist Tom Lehrer dies aged 97

Tom Lehrer, the popular and erudite US song satirist who lampooned marriage, politics, racism and the Cold War, then largely abandoned his music career to return to teaching maths at Harvard and other universities, has died aged 97. Friend David Herder said Lehrer died on Saturday at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. No cause of death was revealed. Advertisement Lehrer had remained on the maths faculty of the University of California at Santa Cruz well into his late 70s. In 2020, he even turned away from his own copyright, granting the public permission to use his lyrics in any format without any fee in return. A Harvard prodigy, having earned a maths degree from the institution at the age of 18, Lehrer soon turned his very sharp mind to old traditions and current events. His songs included Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, The Old Dope Peddler (set to a tune reminiscent of The Old Lamplighter), Be Prepared (in which he mocked the Boy Scouts) and The Vatican Rag, in which Lehrer, an atheist, poked at the rites and ceremonies of the Roman Catholic Church. Accompanying himself on piano, he performed the songs in a colourful style reminiscent of such musical heroes as Gilbert and Sullivan and Stephen Sondheim, the latter a lifelong friend. Advertisement Lehrer was often likened to such contemporaries as Allen Sherman and Stan Freberg for his comic riffs on culture and politics and he was cited by Randy Newman and 'Weird Al' Jankovic among others as an influence. He mocked the forms of music he did not like (modern folk songs, rock 'n' roll and modern jazz), laughed at the threat of nuclear annihilation and denounced discrimination. But he attacked in such an erudite, even polite, manner that almost no-one objected. Lehrer produced a political satire song each week for the 1964 television show That Was The Week That Was, the US version of the ground-breaking topical comedy show that anticipated Saturday Night Live a decade later. He released the songs the following year in an album titled That Was The Year That Was. Advertisement The material included Who's Next?, an examination of which government will be the next to get the nuclear bomb … perhaps Alabama? (Lehrer did not need to tell his listeners that it was a bastion of segregation at the time.) Pollution takes a look at the then-new concept that perhaps rivers and lakes should be cleaned up. His songs were revived in the 1980 musical revue Tomfoolery, and he made a rare public appearance in London in 1998 at a celebration honouring that musical's producer, Cameron Mackintosh.

Why Kelly Rowland told fans to 'shut up' during Beyonce's show

Destiny's Child reunited for the final show of Beyoncé Knowles-Carter 's $387.8M-grossing, 32-date Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour in Paradise, NV on Saturday night. The 43-year-old R&B diva, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams performed a medley of their early aughts-era tracks Lose My Breath and Bootylicious, but it was the moment they helped sing her 2022 track Energy which went viral. The disco-inspired song originated Beyoncé's 'Everybody on Mute' challenge, and Kelly (born Kelendria) waited five seconds before mouthing 'shut up' to the fans still screaming inside Allegiant Stadium. The 44-year-old R&B songstress then cracked a reassuring smile to let the audience know she wasn't truly upset. Destiny's Child last reunited for the November 21st opening of Michelle's Broadway musical Death Becomes Her at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in Manhattan. But the popular girl group - which quit in 2005 - hadn't performed live together since Knowles-Carter's headlining gig at California 's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2018. Rowland's passionate, hot-tempered nature regularly keeps her from attending her 10-year-old son Titan Jewell Weatherspoon's basketball games. 'I had to pull back from some of the games. I'm the spirited mom,' the four-time Grammy winner admitted on The Jennifer Hudson Show in January. 'My husband [Tim Weatherspoon]'s like, "You know, you should stay home this game. This team...I don't know what's going [to happen]." And I'm like, "Word?" It's really great though because it's teaching [Titan] sportsmanship.' Kelly and her 51-year-old ex-manager have also welcomed four-year-old son Noah Jon Weatherspoon, during her 11-year marriage. Last year, Rowland went viral when she stood up to a pushy female usher hurrying her off the red carpet during the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Marcello Mio. 'Don't talk to me like that. Don't talk to me like that!' the Atlanta-born beauty told the security guard according to TikTok lip reader @tismejackieg. 'No, don't talk to me like that. You are not my mother, and you don't talk to me like that. I'm not a child, don't talk to me like that.' The unidentified staffer was also pictured scolding and putting her hands on Dominican actress Massiel Taveras and K-pop sensation Yoona on the red carpet. It came two months after Kelly walked off the set of TODAY after being 'offended' that Savannah Guthrie kept asking her about Beyoncé' rather than her own project during the 8am interview. Rowland was scheduled to fill in for Jenna Bush Hager in the fourth hour as guest host of TODAY with Hoda & Jenna, but left Studio 1A at Rockefeller Center after she and her team were 'unhappy and felt disrespected' - according to TheWrap. The disco-inspired song originated Beyoncé's 'Everybody on Mute' challenge, and Kelly (born Kelendria) waited five seconds before mouthing 'shut up' to the fans still screaming inside Allegiant Stadium The 44-year-old R&B songstress then cracked a reassuring smile to let the audience know she wasn't truly upset The Building The Band judge will next serve opening act duties for Brandy and Monica's 27-date The Boy Is Mine Tour, which kicks off at Heritage Bank Center in Cincinnati, OH on October 16. Kelly will then coach series 14 of The Voice UK - premiering early 2026 on ITV1 - alongside Sir Tom Jones, as well as Tom Fletcher & Danny Jones. And last April, Rowland and Cliff 'Method Man' Smith co-starred in Linda Mendoza's upcoming rom-com Relationship Goals for Amazon MGM Studios, which is based on Michael Todd's 2020 bestselling novel. The My Fault producer-star - who boasts 43.6M social media followers - is also every bit the influencer with paid partnerships for brands like Lancôme, Jurassic World: The Experience, Airbnb, Infatuation Los Angeles, Pull-Ups, and Shiseido. Kelly - whose three-octave lyric mezzo-soprano pipes were last featured on Ayra Starr's 2022 Bloody Samaritan (Remix) - hasn't released a full-blown record since her fourth studio album Talk a Good Game in 2013.
