Battery storage adoption growing in Australia as federal government rebates go live
Lithium-ion batteries of different specific chemistries continue to dominate
New technologies promising to increase energy capacity, power and safety
Battery storage has been in the limelight with increasing frequency due in no small part to the Australian federal government's move to offer significant rebates for home storage systems from July 1, 2025.
While the $2.3bn program to provide homeowners with a discount of about 30% on the upfront costs of installing small-scale batteries led to the various states adjusting their own programs – downwards for most part – it has led a big surge in interest.
This interest has translated into real world numbers with solar and storage services provider SunWiz flagging that battery sales had surged past solar photovoltaic system sales for the first time ever in May 2025.
Capacity of battery systems has also increased with the typical installed battery climbing from 10 kilowatt hours to 15kWh.
With all that said and done, just what are batteries, what makes them tick and why are they important?
An equally large driver – if not the greater at this point – is the increasing adoption of battery electric vehicles.
Energy storage solution
Typically, when one talks about battery storage, one is referring to rechargeable lithium-ion batteries much like those found in smartphones and other devices but scaled up to meet the needs of entire homes or even significant portions of an energy grid.
Battery storage systems generally take excess energy produced by renewable energy sources such as home or grid-scale PV panels or wind turbines and store it away from use when it's dark or when the wind isn't blowing.
They are widely considered to be indispensable towards achieving net zero emissions as they will backup renewable power, stabilise the grid and reduce (or remove) the reliance on fossil fuels during periods of peak demand.
Altech Batteries chief financial officer Martin Stein agrees, telling Stockhead that while the world was ramping up renewable energy production, it is intermittent in nature as it is reliant on the sun shining or the wind blowing.
'However, power grids require 24-7 stability so the world needs batteries to store the excess energy so that it can return to the grid at night-time and when it is required,' he said.
'Energy arbitrage – essentially the purchasing of excess power when prices are low and then storing it for sale during peak usage periods – is also becoming as much as an investment proposition for battery storage as the grid stabilisation requirement.'
Stein adds the Australian government's grants have placed batteries at the forefront of residential customers as a solution for their solar power requirements.
It shouldn't come as a surprise then that the battery energy storage system market is growing at a 28% compound annual growth rate as it scales up to meet net zero targets.
Battery components
While other types of batteries might play more specialised roles in the future, like redox flow batteries for base load or longer duration energy, the most commonly used for now are still lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries take their name from their use of lithium as a key ingredient.
Other minerals – often referred to as critical minerals – are also found in batteries with notable examples such as nickel, cobalt, graphite, iron and phosphate.
The exact mix depends on the specific battery chemistry – notable examples of which are NMC (nickel manganese cobalt), NCA (nickel cobalt aluminium) and LFP (lithium iron phosphate).
Such batteries have been in use since the 1990s though they were only used for small devices then.
Drilling down into the nuts and bolts, the active parts of batteries typically consist of a positive electrode, a negative electrode (the anode) and an electrolyte.
The electrode is typically a metal oxide or phosphate while the anode is made from graphite. Lithium is found within the liquid electrolyte, which is typically a lithium salt in an organic solvent though research is underway to make affordable solid electrolytes that are expected to improve safety, energy density and charging speed.
While there has been plenty of research since the 1990s to improve energy density, power and battery life (or charge cycles), the anode has reached the peak of what it can do using just graphite alone.
Significant focus has also been placed on safety as attention on fires caused by lithium-ion batteries has led to growing demand for safer technologies.
Developments
This demand for safety is one of the reasons for the development of alternative technologies such as Altech Batteries' (ASX:ATC) CERENERGY solid state sodium batteries that use sodium chloride – common table salt – and nickel powder rather than critical minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt, graphite and manganese.
The combination of this chemistry and solid electrolytes makes them significantly safer as they don't experience thermal runaway, have a longer lifespan and an operating temperature range from -40 degrees Celsius to 60C.
'That's where Altech's battery technology becomes very beneficial. It's very safe, very robust technology,' Stein said.
'I think the world is also becoming aware of the risks of the raw material supply chain, especially with China dominating a lot of these raw materials like graphite.
'The world wants to secure its energy storage. It wants raw materials that are readily available and abundant like the very cheap and readily available sodium chloride that is found in Altech's products.'
Altech itself is currently focused on securing the finance to construct its battery plant in Germany.
'We are looking to mandate a leading European bank to run the debt process for the financing and we're looking at equity partners that would like to take a 49% stake in the project,' Stein added.
'Between those two avenues of finance, we're looking to raise the money to construct the plant and start producing these batteries. '
Other battery types
Li-S Energy's (ASX:LIS) lithium-sulphur batteries resurrect an old idea that was unable to be commercialised due to poor cycle life but use unique nanomaterials and a new nano-composite to address the old challenges.
The new batteries promise higher energy density than lithium-ion batteries while being lighter and greener. This makes them ideally suited to applications such as powering drones.
It recently produced lithium metal foils from its facility in Geelong, Victoria.
Meanwhile, Novonix (ASX:NVX) recently received a patent for its low surface area silicon alloy materials for possible use as anode active materials in lithium-ion batteries.
This describes the process to generate battery anode alloy powders of high silicon content, relatively low surface area and relatively large particle size, which are desirable for stable, energy dense anode electrodes with the possibility of improving battery lifetime without sacrificing performance.
On the silicon front, AnteoTech (ASX:ADO) is also making waves with its Ultranode silicon dominant anodes that address the expansion issue that blocks the use of silicon.
Its anodes recently reached a key technical milestone after being used for 890 cycles with 80% capacity retention with 1070 cycles at 70% capacity retention for a 70% silicon anode.
The technology allows anodes to be configured t a range of silicon content levels to suit diverse battery applications across EVs, drones, power tools and other specialty batteries including wearables.
These improvements led giant car maker Mercedes Benz, which ordered evaluation material in October 2024, to acknowledge that they see value in the company's technology and that it will continue to engage with ADO as they progress their battery technology strategy.

The Australian Business Network The bulk of the mobile operator came about following a truce between bitter telco rivals based in London and Hong Kong. Then five years ago, Vodafone Australia combined with broadband upstart TPG, itself a product of a string of telco buyouts, including iiNet and AAPT. Even that $10bn mash-up between Vodafone Australia and TPG almost didn't go ahead when the competition regulator attempted to thwart the deal. Along the way, there have been efforts by TPG to hook up with big rival Telstra to secure better coverage in the bush, but this eventually switched to Optus. It's been a wild ride for the little telco now called TPG Telecom. Flush with cash, chief executive Iñaki Berroeta reckons his telco has the best shot yet of becoming more than the third force. After coming off a massive 5G investment cycle, Berroeta doesn't need to spend more building out TPG's network. This time, it's about getting the back end of his business in shape, including slashing debt. Berroeta spelt out his plans for the $4.7bn windfall from last year's sale of its fibre network to Macquarie-backed Vocus. Berroeta says there were three aims from this: return funds to shareholders, slash debt and free-up the register. This will create what TPG has always craved, a simpler, leaner telco. As expected, $3bn of the funds will go back to shareholders, but under a simultaneous 'de facto' $688m capital raising, this also frees up billions to pay down debt. It's not all that simple. In an elegant solution thrashed out by TPG's bankers, Bank of America, a capital return has been structured as a share reduction, but minority shareholders can elect to take their returns in either cash or new TPG shares. This 'reinvestment' is the trigger which raises the additional funds to slash its debt pile almost in half. It is designed as a way to loosen up a tight — but friendly — shareholder grip on the registry. 'Shareholder curse' TPG has suffered from the shareholder 'curse' where several big investors crowd the share registry. In this case, the holdings are split between Hong Kong's Hutchinson, London's Vodafone, TPG founder David Teoh and long-time TPG/Teoh-backer Soul Patts. Combined, they have 77 per cent. The low liquidity has turned off some investors. All the big shareholders support the plan to take this stake proportionally down to 70 per cent, without triggering massive tax liabilities which would have otherwise come from a share sale. The exercise will be closely watched as one of Australia's most ambitious efforts yet in trying to free up the share registry while keeping big shareholders happy. It can only happen where everyone is on the same page and agrees to sit out of the reinvestment. The next step, the debt reduction, is just as critical. Wiping as much as $2.4bn from debt is set to deliver TPG a long-sought after investment grade credit rating (S&P issued a BBB rating on Tuesday). At the same time, lower debt repayments will free up substantial spare cash for future capex while underpinning dividends. There's also another $100m of costs to come out of TPG's business in coming years, adding to the free cash it generates. Given the ongoing demands of heavy spending and saturation of the market, telcos are no longer the growth animals they once promised. Now, the name of the game is keeping costs and debt down to generate as much cash as possible to return to investors. Even with 5.5 million mobile customers, Berroeta reckons TPG can do both — grow and return cash to investors. 'It's not that we choose between one or the other,' Berroeta says about growth versus income. 'We are a good income company, at the same time growing higher than the industry. 'That is a spot where we want to be'. He is anticipating a market share boost coming with its entry into regional Australia through last year's landmark network sharing deal with Optus. This will see it compete not only against Optus in the regions, but also Telstra. Although 5G is behind it, the next big investment phase is still coming over the horizon — the move to 6G services, which should start from the end of the decade. The demands won't be anywhere on the scale of the billions spent by the industry, however, in the switch from 4G to 5G and further upgrades. The 6G network will mostly be on software spending, which can leverage existing and mobile wireless equipment. With lower demands for capex spending, this means the telco race won't be won purely who has the bigger balance sheet. An Australian technology company has secured a 'groundbreaking' $125 million deal with a European country for a 'high energy laser weapon system' designed to shoot down over a dozen drones within a minute. Electro Optic Systems (EOS) signed a contract with a European NATO Member State – the name of which has not been disclosed – to deliver the 100-kilowatt anit-drone weapon between 2025-2028. 'The new laser counter-drone capability was developed by EOS to address the urgent market need and emerging strategic requirement to defend against drone swarm attacks at an economical cost,' EOS said in a statement on its website. 'This is the world's first export order for a 100-kilowatt class laser defence system.' The high energy laser weapons was designed to defend against drone swarm attacks. Picture: Supplied/Electro Optic Systems The company said the order, which is valued at €71.4 million (or about $A125 million), will be fulfilled in Singapore, where EOS has a laser innovation centre. 'EOS is already an established global leader in counter-drone capability using kinetic weapons and missiles to bring down drones. The high-power laser builds on these core competencies and substantially extends them.' The system – which is mobile and can work on a truck – operates 'at the speed of light' and can shoot down as many as twenty drones in a minute, Dr Andreas Schwer, Chief Executive Officer of Electro Optic Systems told 'The laser can hit a target almost instantly … unlike a bullet which takes a second to get there,' Dr Schwer said. Picture: Electro Optic Systems He said the system works by amplifying lasers to high power levels. '(It) then combines multiple laser beams together,' he explained. 'It tracks targets very accurately – this is critical – and keeps the laser beam on the target … The light energy typically degrades the drone target in 1-2 seconds.' While missiles generally have a longer range, the high-power laser system 'can shoot down many more targets' at a cheaper cost within a two to five kilometre range. 'Missile systems cost $0.5m – $2.0m per shot fired,' Dr Schwer said. 'The laser system costs less than 10 cents per shot.' 'Lasers can shoot directly upwards, which ballistics (bullets and missiles) often cannot do,' he added. Picture: AP Photo/Efrem Lukatsky With drones becoming increasingly more common in modern warfare and swarms posing a 'real threat', Dr Schwer said militaries will need to employ a 'layered solution', including laser systems, rocket systems and longer-range missiles to protect their valuable assets. 'Drones are a big threat both in military and civil domains,' he said. 'Because drones get cheaper every year, everyone is using them and many valuable assets are very vulnerable.' He noted other countries are trying to develop laser weapon technology, 'but it is very complex'. 'This is the first very international supply contract of this size in the laser weapon industry – a groundbreaking deal for our industry and for EOS,' he said in a video on the company's website. Looking to the future, Dr Schwer said laser weapons will continue to play a role on the battlefield, becoming more powerful and portable over time. Going forward, the company is looking to expand its 50 to 100 kilowatt family and develop systems towards the 150 kilowatt class to meet future needs. 'We are also looking to develop naval variants of our models, giving the critical gap in the market for effective counter-drone solutions.' Russia tests laser defences It comes as Russia last month conducted large-scale tests of new laser systems to defend against drones – which both Ukraine and Russia have deployed during the nations' three year war. 'These technologies will form one of the key elements of the universal air defense system President Vladimir Putin recently called for,' the Board of the Military-Industrial Complex said in a statement. 'The test results will be used to refine existing models and create systems capable of providing reliable protection against modern air attack weapons.' Speaking at the 'European Defense Industry: Prospects for Cooperation with the Ukrainian Defense Industry' conference in December, Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi said the country's military proudly declared Tryzub (trident) 'laser is real and operational', adding that efforts were underway to scale up its capabilities against Russia. Colonel Sukharevskyi also introduced the concept of 'mother drones' or 'queen drones' — unmanned aerial systems capable of carrying two FPV (first-person view) light attack drones during his address. According to the Kyiv Independent, the announcement marked a significant leap in Ukraine's military innovation. A Thai hospitality group has been confirmed as the new owner of Melbourne's luxurious Park Hyatt hotel after a more than $205m purchase locked in two months ago. KS Hotels, just the third Thai-based group to snap up a major Victorian hotel, have bought the landmark set between the state's parliament, treasury and the Fitzroy Gardens, from Hong Kong's Fu Wah International. With a 245-room floorplan it's Melbourne's biggest hotel sale since 2017, when a run of accommodation centres including the W Hotel, the Novotel on Collins St and the Hilton at South Wharf were all sold to South-East Asian buyers. Catholic Church selling Melbourne terraces opposite St Patrick's Many of the city's most prominent hotels are owned by groups operating from across Asia, including the Westin, owned by a Malaysian company, and the Windsor, owned by Indonesia's Halim Group. Parties involved in the sale were unable to confirm a price, however industry sources have put it above the $205m paid for Sydney's Intercontinental Double Bay in 2024. JLL's head of investment sales for Australasia Peter Harper was among the agents who helped broker the deal and said it reflected Melbourne's 'incredible ability to absorb new stock coming through'. 'I don't know how anyone can see anything other than the market has done exceptionally well,' Mr Harper said. He noted that there had been more than 100 inquires and 10 groups that made offers for the hotel from when it was first quietly being offered to the market late last year, to after its launch on the open market in January. His colleague Nick Macfie said the Park Hyatt was among Melbourne's most impressive hotel offerings, and while a handful of local hotels like the Grand Hyatt with vast numbers of rooms available could 'pip it', it was unclear when a pricier offering might next hit the market. 'I would think Melbourne, this will be the biggest deal for a hotel for some time,' Mr Macfie said. 'And potentially in Australia it will be the biggest for a while.'
