Yemen appoints finance minister as new PM

Aden, Yemen, May 4 (UNI) Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) appointed Finance Minister Salem Saleh Bin Braik as the country's new prime minister on Saturday, following the resignation of Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak.
The decision, reported by state-run Saba news agency, came just hours after bin Mubarak stepped down, citing constitutional constraints and obstacles that hindered his reform efforts.
Bin Braik, who has served as the finance minister since 2019 and vice finance minister prior to that, has held several key financial and administrative roles throughout his career.
The official statement clarified that all current ministers would retain their positions, with bin Mubarak being appointed as an advisor to the PLC president. Bin Mubarak, in his resignation statement, highlighted the "numerous difficulties" he faced, including an inability to reshape the government and implement critical reforms due to limited constitutional powers.
Bin Mubarak, who took office in February 2024, had previously served as Yemen's foreign minister and ambassador to the United States. Yemen's civil war, which began in 2014 when Houthi forces took control of the capital Sanaa, continues to drive instability, with the internationally recognised government operating from Aden.

Mamata hits streets at Santiniketan to protest 'language terrorism'

Bolpur (West Bengal), July 28 (UNI) Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today marched about 3 km from Santiniketan, the seat of poet Rabindranath Tagore, to protest the alleged linguistic terrorism on the migrant Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states. Holding a portrait of Tagore, Banerjee, who led the march of hundreds of her followers, was flanked by her senior cabinet minister Firhad Hakim and Bolpur MP Satabdi Roy. On July 21 during a Shahid Diwas rally in Kolkata, the CM had announced to renew the language agitation or Bhasha Andolon, from Birbhum. She said the language agitation would continue across the state until the 2026 assembly elections. The 3-km march from Santiniketan Guest House to Jamboni bus stand was, however, a silent rally in this rural area of district of Birbhum. Before proceeding to rural Bengal, Banerjee accused the states ruled by BJP governments of unleashing a "linguistic terror" on Bengali-speaking people, alleging that they were manhandled by Delhi Police. She also posted a purported video clip on social media X of a child and his mother, who she said were part of the migrant family from Chanchal in Malda, allegedly being assaulted by the Delhi Police. 'Atrocious!! Terrible!! See how Delhi Police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by BJP in the country against the Bengalis!' she said. Ahead of her street protest, Banerjee held an administrative meeting for Birbhum district where she also expressed surprise that some 1,000 BLOs ( block level officers) were taken to Delhi for election- related training. "This is surprising that though these BLOs are from the state government, neither the state government nor the chief secretary knew their assignment. The EC takes charge of a state administration once an election schedule is announced. But before that, you all are state government employees," Banerjee said. The TMC has been campaigning against SIR, saying a similar attempt would be made in Bengal to "remove voters." UNI PC PRS

Will target all ships linked to Israel, say Yemen's Houthis

The rebel Houthi group in Yemen has said it will target merchant ships belonging to any company that does business with Israeli ports, regardless of nationality, as part of what it described as the next phase of its operations against Israel. The Iran-backed Houthis launched a campaign targeting merchant vessels in response to the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip, saying they were doing so in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Their attacks over the past two years have upended shipping in the Red Sea, through which $1 trillion of goods usually passes each year. In an announcement late Sunday (July 27, 2025) night, the Houthis said they had 'decided to escalate their military support operations and begin implementing the fourth phase of the naval blockade' against Israel. They warned that they would target 'all ships belonging to any company that deals with the ports of the Israeli enemy, regardless of the nationality of that company, and in any location within the reach of our armed forces.' The vessels would be targeted regardless of their destination, they added. The group said countries should pressure Israel to stop the war in Gaza and lift its blockade on the Palestinian territory 'if they want to avoid this escalation.' Earlier this month, the Houthis attacked and sank two Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carriers – the Magic Seas and the Eternity C. The attack on the latter left four crew members dead and 11 more were taken captive, while all 22 crew members of the Magic Seas were rescued before the ship sank. From November 2023 to December 2024, the Houthis targeted more than 100 ships with missiles and drones. The rebels stopped their attacks during a brief ceasefire in the war and later became the target of an intense, weekslong airstrike campaign ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump. In May, the U.S. announced a deal with the Houthis to end the airstrikes in return for an end to shipping attacks, although the rebel group said the agreement did not include halting attacks on targets it believed were aligned with Israel.
