Android Auto now matches your phone's wallpaper colors, thanks to Material You
Google is finally giving Android Auto a more personalized touch. With the latest beta update, Android Auto can now mirror your Android phone's wallpaper color scheme using Material You, a theming system that pulls accent colors from your background image. That means your car's infotainment screen may soon match the vibe of your home screen. This change arrives as part of Android Auto version 14.9 beta, though some users are already seeing it in the stable release. According to a recent report from 9to5Google, the update fixes earlier color consistency issues and expands support to more dynamic themes. For example, the color accents now appear uniformly across Android Auto's interface and refresh automatically when you change your phone's wallpaper. The effect is most noticeable in the Android Auto settings panel. While this isn't based on the newer "Material You Expressive" design that just rolled out with Android 16, it's still a major visual upgrade for Android Auto. Those additions could bring Android Auto in line with Google's larger AI ambitions, as Gemini continues to show up in places like Wear OS, Android, and even Gmail. Compared to Apple CarPlay, which still opts for a mostly static and clean interface, Android Auto is now exploring deeper personalization. Apple has been slower to adopt adaptive UI changes, focusing instead on consistency across vehicles. For users who prefer more cohesion between their phone and car, Google's approach might offer the more flexible experience. In my view, this is a welcome update. While some drivers may not care about matching UI colors while commuting, these changes add polish to a platform that has often lagged behind. It's also a sign that Google is treating Android Auto as more than just a functional tool. However, we hope that visual updates don't overshadow the ongoing need for faster performance and fewer bugs, two issues that still occasionally affect the in-car experience. At the very least, it's encouraging to see Android Auto evolving again. And if Google does move ahead with Gemini integration and better car control features, it could help the platform stand out in a competitive space where even small improvements can make a big difference behind the wheel. If this is Google's big Pixel Watch upgrade, we've got a problem
The Pixel Watch 4 looks like it's finally fixing some of the most obvious complaints. It is rumored to come with better repairability, improved battery life, and a much brighter display. Those are all welcome changes. But I still don't think the Pixel Watch would be easy to recommend if that's all that Google changes. Google's upcoming watch fixes key pain points including repairability, battery, and display all get better. | Image credit — Onleaks and 91mobiles Let's be fair: there are some real improvements this year. For the first time, Google is giving users a smartwatch that's actually repairable. That means if the domed glass cracks — something that's all too common — you won't be forced to replace the entire Pixel Watch 4 is also getting a bump in battery capacity (327 mAh for the 41mm model, 459 mAh for the 45mm) and a new side-mounted charging system that promises 25% faster charging. Despite featuring a dual-chip design intended to improve efficiency, our testing revealed underwhelming real-world battery life and no major gains in responsiveness. It also suffered from a range of software issues — from finicky call quality and inconsistent workout tracking to a Maps experience that sometimes failed to even lock on to your location. The concern now is that the Pixel Watch 4 will continue this trend of 'almost great' hardware let down by unoptimized software and recycled components. Pixel Watch 3 review: a severely OK upgrade The Pixel Watch 4 will reportedly introduce some new health features like 'Breathing Emergencies' detection and Emergency Satellite Communications. Those sound useful, but they also feel like incremental additions — especially when rivals like Apple and Samsung are pushing deeper into performance, sensor accuracy, and AI-powered personalization. More importantly, many of the Pixel Watch 3 's core problems still haven't been addressed. You still can't freely customize your watch face with third-party tools like Facer. You're still forced to use proprietary bands. And the minimal, space-age design — while undeniably stylish — often feels out of place with more formal or diverse fashion choices. Then there's the software experience itself. The Pixel Watch 3 shipped with bugs ranging from unresponsive notifications to mysterious screen glitches. Some of the most hyped features, like the "Morning Brief," felt half-baked. And even basics like automatic workout detection lagged far behind what competitors offer. It's hard to believe all of that will magically be fixed this time around — especially if the underlying hardware and software foundation remain largely the same.
