Dhankhar's resignation sparks buzz: Opposition not on same page? Priyanka Chaturvedi ‘fact checks' Jairam Ramesh

Time of India22-07-2025
NEW DELHI: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's sudden resignation late Monday has sparked a wave of speculation and political reactions. A notable disagreement has emerged within the opposition ranks regarding his tenure and abrupt exit.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi early Tuesday took aim at attempts to paint Dhankhar's tenure as balanced, pushing back against Congress leader Jairam Ramesh's defence of the outgoing Rajya Sabha Chairman.
Without naming Ramesh directly, Chaturvedi quoted the Congress general secretary's claim that he 'took both the Government and the Opposition to task in equal measure' and dismissed it as false, reminding critics that the Opposition had once been compelled to bring a no-confidence motion against him.

Ramesh, reacting to Dhankhar's sudden resignation on Monday evening, described the move as 'shocking' and 'inexplicable'. He said, 'Mr. Dhankar took both the Government and the Opposition to task in equal measure.'
However, on early Tuesday, Chaturvedi quickly contradicted that claim with a sharp rebuttal on social media. 'Fact check: Incorrect. Reminder: Opposition was forced to file a no confidence motion against the chair because of the partisan manner of conduct.

Let's at least not forget that, just because, the moment has come as a surprise,' she posted.
Ramesh, meanwhile, has suggested that Dhankhar's resignation involved more than just health concerns. In two detailed statements across Monday evening and Tuesday morning, Ramesh recounted events that he believed pointed to deeper tensions.
He highlighted how Dhankhar had chaired the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) at 12:30 PM on Monday, where most members, including JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju, were present.
A follow-up meeting was scheduled for 4:30 PM but both Nadda and Rijiju failed to attend without informing Dhankhar personally. 'Rightly he took umbrage and rescheduled the BAC for today at 1 PM,' Ramesh said.
He added, 'So something very serious happened yesterday between 1 PM and 4:30 PM to account for the deliberate absence.' While stating that the health reasons cited by Dhankhar must be respected, Ramesh noted, 'It is also a fact that there are far deeper reasons for his resignation.'
Ramesh praised Dhankhar for speaking up 'fearlessly' on issues such as farmers' welfare and judicial accountability and for trying, 'to the extent possible under the current G2 ruling regime,' to accommodate the opposition. 'Shri Jagdeep Dhankar's resignation speaks highly of him. It also speaks poorly of those who had got him elected as Vice President in the first instance,' he concluded.
Dhankhar, 74, had undergone angioplasty recently and had served as Vice President since August 2022. His sudden exit came on the first day of the monsoon session, catching many in Parliament off guard.

Chidambaram attacks Centre over ceasefire after Operation Sindoor

New Delhi Congress leader and former home minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday lauded India's military leadership during and after Operation Sindoor, but accused the Centre of failing to match its candour, decisiveness, and strategy. Congress MP P Chidambaram speaks during a debate in the Rajya Sabha on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. (PTI) Participating in the special discussion in Rajya Sabha on Operation Sindoor, the Congress veteran said, 'The Chief of Defence Staff was candid about losses. The Deputy Chief of Army Staff admitted Chinese aircraft and missiles were deployed by Pakistan. If true, China is testing its military hardware in our conflict.' Drawing a parallel with the this transparency with the government's response, he said, 'Where is the strategy? Why has the government not admitted the intelligence and security failures that led to the Pahalgam attack?' The former home minister also questioned why India agreed to do a ceasefire when the operation against Pakistan was successful. Referring to the Bangladesh war of 1971, he said, 'On December 16, 1971, there was a historic victory. General Niazi surrendered to General Jagjit Singh Aurora along with 93,000 soldiers. It was the largest surrender of prisoners of war after World War II. On the contrary, Operation Sindoor ended with a ceasefire. I think the people of India know the difference between a surrender and a ceasefire.' Noting that India was no longer fighting a one-front or a two-front war, he said, 'Pakistan and China were no longer different fronts, but are fused fronts'. He also asked the government whether it has plans to take on a 'fused' front war with Pakistan, China and also some other players. Chidambaram also took aim at United States President Donald Trump's claims of brokering an India-Pakistan ceasefire, alleging that the DGMOs of both nations could not have agreed without political approval. 'President Trump declared the ceasefire. Not even a note of protest from our government,' he said, also citing US actions like steep tariffs, deportations of Indian migrants 'in handcuffs and shackles,' and restrictions on foreign students without any Indian response. Observing that India sent delegations to various countries, Chidambaram wondered why no delegation was sent to neighbouring nations like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and the Maldives. 'Everyone condemned terrorism and sympathised with terror victims in India after the Pahalgam attack, but no country named and shamed Pakistan,' he said.

Parliament Monsoon session Day 8 LIVE: Jaishankar, Nadda to address Rajya Sabha on Operation Sindoor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday affirmed in the Lok Sabha that no leader of any country asked India to stop Operation Sindoor but lamented that while the nation got support from the entire world the Congress and its allies could not stand behind the valour of the nation's soldiers. Responding to the two-day debate on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor in the Lower House, he said no country in the world stopped India from taking action in its defence against terrorism. The 'political leadership' of the country had failed to defend the 'military leadership', and no effort had been made to expose the 'Pakistan-China nexus' at global forums, Opposition members alleged. They also questioned the silence of the BJP over a Madhya Pradesh Minister's controversial comments on Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, and the social media attack on Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and his daughter.

BJP vs BJP: Why Kerala nuns' arrest in Chhattisgarh has driven party units apart

The arrest of two Catholic nuns in the BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh on charges of alleged 'conversion and human trafficking' has upset the party unit in Kerala, where it is making attempts to reach out to the influential Christian community in the run-up to the local body elections, slated later this year, and the Assembly elections due in April 2026. Deviating from the party line in Chhattisgarh and other states over conversion, the Kerala BJP has rejected the case slapped by the Chhattisgarh administration against the nuns, who are from Kerala. It is another matter that a section of the Sangh Parivar hardliners in Kerala has seized on nuns' arrest to put the conversion row on the front burner. In recent years the Kerala BJP has sought to sidestep the issue of conversion in its bid to connect with Christians in the state. Chattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Monday justified the police action against the nuns, saying that the issue was 'serious and sensitive that affects safety of our daughters'' and that it 'should not be politicised'. The Kerala BJP has dismissed CM Sai's statement, asserting that the arrested nuns were not involved in any conversion or human trafficking attempts. It has also rushed party general secretary Anoop Antony, its key Christain face, to Raipur to take up the matter with the authorities there to provide relief to the jailed nuns. Kerala BJP president and ex-Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar told reporters in Delhi, 'We will ensure all support for the nuns. Our state general secretary is currently in Chhattisgarh, and we are committed to ensuring that all necessary assistance is provided to secure justice for the arrested nuns. While Chhattisgarh, being a tribal state, has an anti-conversion law in place, we are convinced that the allegations of conversion against the Malayali nuns are not true. We have been in constant touch with the state government since the issue first came to light. The BJP is determined to stand by the nuns until they are released and justice is delivered.' He added that the parties like the Congress were trying to exploit the matter for their 'opportunistic politics'. The Kerala BJP went into a damage control exercise after the Congress, which has seemed to be losing traction among its Christian support base in the state, raked up nuns' arrest to 'expose dual face' of the BJP. State Congress leaders sought to project the BJP as 'a party that jails Christian clergy in North India while visiting Christian homes in Kerala on Christmas and Easter'. What has worried the BJP is the strong stand taken by Kerala's Churches, especially the Catholic Church, against the Chhattisgarh police's action against the two nuns, who belong to the politically, numerically and socially powerful Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. In Thrissur, many Catholics took to the streets Tuesday in protest against the nuns' arrest. The BJP had registered its first-ever Lok Sabha win from Kerala when actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi won the Thrissur seat in the 2024 elections. Besides, in the recent organisational revamp, the party inducted several Christian faces in its leadership at the state and district levels. However, the Kerala BJP's stance towards the nuns' arrest has not gone down well with other Sangh Parivar outfits. Prominent RSS leader and state president of Hindu Aikya Vedi, an umbrella organisation of pro-Sangh groups, R V Babu, in a Facebook post, said, 'The activities of Christian missionaries in North and Northeastern states are different. Massive conversion has been going on in those places focusing on Hindus. Why is the Church not going to Muslim areas with evangelisation activities? Have these missionaries taken any oath that they will serve only Hindus.' Former Vedi general secretary Bhargava Ram, in his Facebook post, said, 'There should not be any compromise towards conversion', adding that 'Let the Christian missionaries try to rectify the backwardness of their own community. Attempts by the Christian community, which is worried over love jihad, to insult Bajrang Dal on the ground that it opposes conversion should be resisted.' Several other social media handles associated with various Sangh Parivar outfits in Kerala have also come out to question the Christian missionary works in North India. Some of them have also taken exception to the Kerala BJP chief 'meddling' in the Chhattisgarh row.
