An 11th grader brings technology to canine care

During a trek last year, Anshul Bhatt realised that the family's eleven-and-a-half-year-old Labrador, Max, was in severe discomfort. While he would normally be running about in the wild, never refusing a dip in a pool of water, he now sat licking his paws in pain. A visit to the vet revealed late-stage arthritis.
'Since it wasn't diagnosed in time, the treatment is less effective. You can alleviate the pain and make dietary changes, but there isn't much you can do beyond a point," says Bhatt, 16, a class XI student at Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Mumbai.
The incident got him thinking. By the end of the year, he arrived at the design for PawPath, a non-invasive gait monitoring device that detects orthopaedic and neurodegenerative diseases in canines. It won him second position in the Animal Sciences category at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair Awards ( for students) in the US in May.
During the early days, Bhatt reached out to vets to understand the current methods being used to study different ailments based on dog gait. Visual clues are the most basic form of detection where a vet physically inspects a dog. The other two require an expensive indoor setup—while kinetic gait analysis studies movement using force plates, kinematic analysis utilises a high-end camera to capture a dog's movement, usually on a treadmill. This would typically be followed by an X-ray while sedated to detect various abnormalities from orthopaedic and neurodegenerative disorders to cruciate ligament tears, osteoarthritis and ataxia.
'From my research, I realised that dogs exhibit altered movement patterns when they are in a lab-based setup since it is not their natural environment. As a result, it may look like they have an issue when there may be none. I started looking at ways to eliminate the subjectivity of visual analysis and to also do it in a way where the dog was comfortable, where the entire process was cost-effective," Bhatt says.
At the heart of his design are inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors, which are strapped on to each limb to capture motion. The first prototype, which took two months to build, featured a central module that gathered data from the four IMUs and transmitted it via Bluetooth. But besides the weight of the entire system, Bhatt realised that the wires were hampering the dog's mobility, both resulting in altered movement patterns.
So, he went wireless with his next prototype that used a WiFi- controlled microcontroller to livestream data. Before strapping it on dogs, he tested it out on a Theo Jansen mechanism that simulated dog gait and captured linear acceleration and angular velocity to verify the accuracy of the sensors. It also allowed him to understand the right placement of the sensors. He wrote an algorithm that would eliminate noise to provide high-quality data and utilised a filter to capture just the linear acceleration, independent of gravity. The cost of the kit is about ₹5,000.
'There were other issues I had to address on the go. For instance, I got a lot of data initially which I attributed to the dog's gait, but which was due to a wobbly sensor. Then, I had to ensure that I was capturing data only when the healthy and unhealthy dogs were moving at the same pace, which would allow for a proper comparison to be made with respect to their gaits," he says.
Once satisfied with the testing, he started collecting data over several months from different breeds of healthy dogs as well as those that suffered from a condition. He then trained Long Short Term Memory neural networks to recognise patterns in the gait and detect anomalies. Along the way, he had to constantly upgrade his skills, everything from understanding dog anatomy to experimenting with different neural networks.
'It's an interdisciplinary project because the sensor is all physics, the movement of the dog is all biology, the artificial intelligence is all maths and then there's the electronics involved. So getting all of these components to work together was quite a challenge, a lot of trial and error at the beginning that was quite frustrating," he says.
Bhatt made a couple of visits to the Biomechanics, Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Engineering (BiOME) lab at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to discuss his creation further.
'PawPath is a great example of how wearable sensors can be translated into real-world veterinary diagnostics. Its current application in characterising canine gait showcases its on-field deployability and is a quintessential example of potential scalable technology, which could marry concepts in biomechanics and artificial intelligence with a strong clinical relevance," says Darshan S Shah, assistant professor and head of BiOME.
The eureka moment arrived when Bhatt tested PawPath on a dog, where the output suggested that it had a high probability of arthritis. He reached out to the vet who confirmed his finding.
Bhatt has been able to achieve high accuracy in disease classification across various breeds. The results alongside the award is validation for his efforts.
In the time ahead, he wants to refine his product further to improve its utility. A smaller device will allow it to be used on smaller breeds. A longer battery life will give owners the opportunity to continuously monitor their pets even while they are away to understand behavioural changes or receive alerts in case of falls or injuries. Besides, it can also be used to track injuries in wild animals based on their movement patterns.
'I want to eventually use AI models to look at data from this device, analyse it and then hand out a simple explanation in English or Hindi on what the problem is. This can be a valuable tool for vets to make better decisions," he says.

Unlike in humans, sexually transmitted infections in dogs aren't part of regular conversations at the vet's clinic unless breeding is being considered. A significant condition in this context is the canine transmissible venereal tumour, also known as TVT. This isn't just a disease that spreads through mating; it's a cancer that transfers directly from one dog to another. TVT is commonly seen in areas with large free-roaming dog populations, but with more pet parents now opting to breed their dogs at home, the risks of it need to be understood. It manifests as a red, cauliflower-like growth that often bleeds easily and may cause discharge, swelling, or discomfort. Unlike typical cancers that develop from a dog's own cells, TVT is composed of cancer cells that originate in another dog. The tumour is highly contagious. Pet parents may not notice anything until the disease has progressed significantly. Dogs may show signs like blood-tinged urine, excessive licking of the genital area, or a mass protruding from the genitals. In pregnant or nursing females, the tumour can cause trauma, interfere with lactation, or lead to secondary infections. Treatment is typically straightforward and effective. Weekly chemotherapy remains the standard of care, with most dogs responding very well. Another serious but less talked-about condition is brucellosis, a bacterial infection that is not only sexually transmitted but also zoonotic, meaning it can infect humans. In dogs, it can lead to infertility, abortions, stillbirths and chronic illness. It is difficult to treat and can remain hidden for long periods, making it especially risky if the infected dog appears outwardly healthy. Unlike TVT, there is no effective treatment for it. Testing dogs before mating is non-negotiable if one is committed to safe breeding. What many pet parents fail to realise is that parasite control is just as crucial. Tick-borne infections such as ehrlichiosis, babesiosis and anaplasmosis can compromise fertility, interfere with a healthy pregnancy, and be fatal to both mother and puppies. These diseases are common in India, particularly during warmer months and monsoon. Dogs may appear well but can carry these pathogens, which surface under the physiological stress of mating or pregnancy. Ticks transmit disease silently, and dogs that frequent parks, gardens or shared walking spaces are at risk. Breeding should never go ahead unless the dog is on a consistent tick-prevention programme, advised by a veterinarian and started well before mating. Preventive measures such as oral or topical treatments offer effective protection but require strict adherence to timing and dosage. Equally vital is routine deworming. Intestinal parasites like roundworms and hookworms can pass from mother to pups either across the placenta or through nursing. This can lead to weakness, diarrhoea, anaemia and even death in neonatal puppies. Deworming should be done before mating and again during pregnancy as advised by a vet, using medications that are safe. Zoe's puppies are now thriving, curious and full of energy. SpaceX Launches Dog's Ashes To Space On Memorial Flight

A dog's ashes were among the remains sent into space this weekend as part of a memorial mission honouring loved ones by carrying them beyond Earth's atmosphere. Franz, a beloved family Labrador, was among 166 small capsules launched aboard the inaugural Perseverance SpaceX Flight by Texas-based Celestis Inc. The mission lifted off Sunday around 5:30 pm from Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara, California. Franz died aged 13 in October 2020. "He was the best dog, just so soft and nice and loved hugs," said the dog's owner Harvin Moore. The pet was more like a sibling to Mr Moore's children, Elizabeth and Quinn. "Now we can't wait to watch our good boy go galactic," he told The NY Post ahead of the launch. The flight lasted about three hours, during which the capsules orbited Earth twice. The rocket then re-entered the atmosphere and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean somewhere between Alaska and Hawaii. A recovery ship, stationed at sea ahead of time, tracked and retrieved the capsules before sending them to Germany for processing. Within two months, the remains will be returned to their families. The cost to send each capsule into space was $3,500 (over Rs 3 lakh). For Franz's owner, the expense was "a lot more" than the dog's value, but entirely worth it for his family of space enthusiasts. Mr Moore said, "The emotional power of being with a group of people who are celebrating the life of a loved one in this way ... it's amazing. It's nothing we'll ever forget. It's just pure joy." Houston-based Celestis has a long history of sending DNA and cremated remains of people, pets, and celebrities into space using rockets like United Launch Alliance's Vulcan Centaur. Their missions have carried iconic figures such as "Star Trek" legends Nichelle Nichols, DeForest Kelley, Gene Roddenberry and his wife Majel Barrett Roddenberry, and James "Scotty" Doohan. They also flew Douglas Trumbull, a visual effects pioneer behind 2001: A Space Odyssey and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, along with symbolic remains of four former US presidents, George Washington, Dwight D Eisenhower, John F Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan, on last year's deep-space Enterprise Flight. Each capsule, crafted from titanium or aluminium and measuring roughly a quarter to half an inch, contained either DNA or cremated remains. These precious capsules orbited Earth twice aboard a 23-foot-tall SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, travelling at a speed of almost 28,000 kmph in low Earth orbit. Charles Chafer, Celestis CEO and co-founder said Saturday, "Many people whose ashes and DNA are flying are people that always wanted to go to space in their lifetime but were never able to do that. It also helps families move from feelings of grief to joy." Also aboard the Perseverance Flight were the ashes of Wesley Dreyer, an aerospace engineer involved in investigating the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, as well as the DNA of a living three-year-old boy in Germany.
