Two seasons for quarterback C.J. Stroud with the Houston Texans looked like two contradictory stories of one hero. In his rookie season, he illuminated like no other, and in his Year 2, he wasn't even considered one of the best quarterbacks of the season.
NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year, C.J. Stroud, had a bummer 2024 NFL season.
Jared Dublin, CBS Sports Writer, explains why the quarterback rocked in his rookie season and suffered tremendously in Year 2. Also, Jared Koch, Sportswriter and Editor at Sports Illustrated, explains how the additions of rookie and veteran players to the Houston Texans would bring about a hopeful change for the 2-time Big Ten's Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year awardee.
Lastly, Colin Cowherd and Chris Simms agree that C.J.
Stroud is better than Jalen Hurts! Let's find out how.

AP's Offensive Player of the Year awardee C.J. Stroud had one of the best rookie seasons any quarterback has ever had
On May 23, Jared Dublin, CBS Sports Writer, very thoughtfully elucidated how Big Ten Freshman of the Year recipient C.J. Stroud's rookie season differed enormously from his Year 2. Dublin wrote, 'Stroud put together one of the best rookie seasons any quarterback has ever had.
He averaged 8.2 yards per attempt, had the NFL's lowest interception rate, led the league in passing yards per game, and finished sixth in Tru Media's expected points added(EPA) per dropback on his way to winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, making the Pro Bowl and finishing eighth in MVP voting.'

1-time Pro Bowler C.J. Stroud's performance deteriorated in his second season because of a lack of supporting players in the Houston Texans
Dublin wrote, 'As the supporting cast atrophied around him, Stroud took a significant step backward in Year 2. He dropped down to 7.0 yards per game, saw his interception rate more than double, had his yards-per-game average dip by over 50 yards, and checked in 28th in EPA(expected points added) per dropback, posting a negative average.'
2-time First-Team All-Big Ten C.J. Stroud may aim for a comeback in his third season now that the offensive coordinator has changed from Bobby Slowik to Nick Caley
After sharing contrasting differences between both seasons, Jared Dublin feels hopeful for Stroud in Year 3.
Dublin wrote, 'A change in offensive coordinator from Bobby Slowik to Nick Caley, plus investments in the offensive line and receiving corps, provide some home for a bounceback in 2025.'
Houston Texans can look for a three-peat at the AFC South title in the 2025 NFL season
On May 25, BVM Sports reported that C.J. Stroud is 8-3 against AFC South teams in his first two seasons.
On May 25, Jared Koch, Sportswriter and Editor of Sports Illustrated wrote, 'Between the (Houston)Texans' rookie and veteran additions, this offense has tools to not only reach their third-straight AFC South title but also lift (C.J.)Stroud,
to even higher heights of production, from what we saw during his rookie campaign. Time will tell if it all ends up coming together.'
Rookie additions for Houston Texans are - running back Woody Marks from the USC Trojans, selected in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and wide receiver Jayden Higgins from Iowa State, selected in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
A veteran addition for Houston Texans is defensive tackle Folorunso Fatukasi.
The 30-year-old DT was re-signed by the Texans, as reported by DJ Bien-Aime, who covers the Houston Texans for ESPN, on May 7.
Colin Cowherd is not okay with 2-time Big Ten Quarterback of the Year C.J. Stroud's ranking in the PFF Quarterback Rankings
On May 22, Colin Cowherd discusses Pro Football Focus Quarterback Rankings with NFL Analyst Chris Simms at his self-named show, The Herd with the Colin Cowherd.
Colin Cowherd REACTS to PFF quarterback rankings | THE HERD NFL w/ Chris Simms
Colin Cowherd said, 'I think PFF got it right with their eight best quarterbacks. I think C.J. Stroud is the only quarterback I look at.
He's tier three. And I thought he's a little lower than I would put him. Okay, tier one is pretty indisputable. (Patrick)Mahomes, Lamar(Jackson), (Joe)Burrow, (Josh)Allen.
Then it goes, Jayden Daniels, I'm comfortable with that. Jalen Hurts, Matthew Stafford, and (Justin)Herbert. That's the one I think that I would put C.J. Stroud in. But are you comfortable with tier two?'
NFL Analyst Chris Simms replied, 'I'm pretty comfortable with it.
I would put C.J. Stroud in front of Jalen Hurts. That would be mine right there. I like Jalen Hurts. I would say he's a top-10 quarterback.
I don't think I would put him in the top 8. I think he'd be 9 or 10 for me. I think with Jalen Hurts, we have a little bit of revisionist history here.
He won the Super Bowl, and everybody just forgot about the 10 weeks before that - that we were like, wait, the passing game and the quarterback was the issue.
He had a good NFC championship game, and I know that. But the divisional game, we were like, man, the quarterback, and the passing game, wild card game, we were like, man the passing game and the quarterback not looking good.'
PFWA All-Rookie Team C.J. Stroud should be in place for Jalen Hurts in the PFF Quarterback Rankings
Simms continued, 'The last 7 or 8 weeks of the year, his top receiver said, what's wrong with the team? - the passing game. So, how can you now be one of the best quarterbacks in the game? That's what I feel.
This is what I fight with Eagles fans all the time. I have a lot of respect, but I think I would have C.J. Stroud in his place on that tier.'
'Yeah, by and large, you and I agree,' said Cowherd.

Lawyer says lawsuit is over between ex-NFL star Shannon Sharpe and woman who accused him of rape

The woman first met Sharpe at a gym in Los Angeles in 2023 when she was 20, and a nearly two-year relationship followed, according to the lawsuit read more NFL Hall of Fame member Shannon Sharpe has resolved a lawsuit that accused him of sexually assaulting a woman during their relationship, her attorney said Friday. 'All matters have now been addressed satisfactorily, and the matter is closed. The lawsuit will thus be dismissed with prejudice,' Tony Buzbee said on X, meaning the lawsuit can't be refiled. No details were released. The lawsuit had sought $50 million. Sharpe called the allegations 'false and disruptive' when the lawsuit was filed in April in Clark County, Nevada. He stepped away from work at ESPN at the time but had pledged to return by the start of the NFL preseason. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD A phone message seeking comment from Sharpe's attorney, David Chesnoff, wasn't immediately returned Friday. The woman first met Sharpe at a gym in Los Angeles in 2023 when she was 20, and a nearly two-year relationship followed, according to the lawsuit. Sharpe, 57, was accused of raping the woman in October 2024 and in January. 'Both sides acknowledge a long-term consensual and tumultuous relationship,' Buzbee said. 'After protracted and respectful negotiations, I'm pleased to announce that we have reached a mutually agreed upon resolution.' Sharpe was a four-time All-Pro tight end who played on two Super Bowl-winning teams with Denver and one with Baltimore over 14 seasons from 1990 to 2003. He was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011. Sharpe retired as the NFL's all-time leader among tight ends in receptions (815), yards receiving (10,060) and touchdowns (62). Those records have been broken. Sharpe has been a staple on TV and social media since retiring. He left FS1's sports debate show 'Undisputed' in 2023 and joined ESPN soon afterward.

Travis Kelce declares one NFL great an ‘absolute legend' with zero hesitation: Is he right?

Travis Kelce boldly calls this NFL icon an 'absolute legend' without second thought (Getty Images) As Travis Kelce prepares to enter his 13th NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs superstar remains at the center of attention. With a Hall of Fame-worthy résumé that includes three Super Bowl rings, record-breaking stats, and unmatched consistency, Kelce's legacy is already cemented. But even as he continues to redefine the tight end position, the 35-year-old didn't miss the chance to honor a trailblazer who helped shape the role he now dominates. Travis Kelce hails Antonio Gates as a 'Legend' While Kelce's own Hall of Fame induction may just be a matter of 'when,' not 'if,' the Chiefs icon recently turned his attention toward a player who paved the path before him—Antonio Gates. On Thursday, the NFL reshared a touching moment showing Gates receiving his Hall of Fame door knock from fellow Chargers icon LaDainian Tomlinson. The scene captured Gates overwhelmed with emotion, and the league captioned it as a moment he 'will remember forever.' Kelce, moved by the tribute, commented simply but powerfully: 'Absolute legend!!' The comment sparked widespread support from fans echoing Kelce's admiration. 'Forever changed the TE position,' one fan remarked. Others celebrated Gates' route-running, hands, and longevity. A user wrote, 'Well deserved. Top 3 TE of all time,' while another reinforced, 'Top 3 TE of all time in my opinion.' Gates, an eight-time Pro Bowler and member of the NFL's 2000s All-Decade Team, will be officially enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 2 in Canton, Ohio, alongside Jared Allen, Eric Allen, and Sterling Sharpe. Travis Kelce is quietly climbing his way to the Mount Rushmore of TEs Currently ranked No. 4 on Athlon's list of the top 25 tight ends in NFL history, Travis Kelce's numbers tell a story of sustained excellence. His 814 receptions in his first 10 seasons set an NFL record for tight ends. With 12,151 receiving yards, he stands third among all tight ends historically—just 141 yards short of surpassing former Steelers great and four-time All-Pro, Hines Ward. In addition, his 80 career touchdowns rank fifth among tight ends, according to Stat Muse. Yet, while fans and analysts continue to push his case for the greatest of all time, Kelce has his sights not just on milestones but on legacy. The upcoming season could very well see him leap into the top three across multiple statistical categories. And with Patrick Mahomes still delivering darts in Kansas City, it's safe to assume Kelce's ceiling is far from reached. FAQs How many Super Bowl rings does Travis Kelce have? Travis Kelce has won three Super Bowl rings with the Kansas City Chiefs. What NFL record does Kelce hold among tight ends? Kelce holds the NFL record for most receptions by a tight end in their first 10 seasons, with 814 catches. Why did Travis Kelce call Antonio Gates a legend? Kelce praised Gates as an 'absolute legend' in response to the NFL sharing Gates' Hall of Fame door knock video.
