Private jet use is soaring—and the U.S. is responsible for the most flights

Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles is one of the country's busiest general aviation hubs, as residents nearby can attest. Those who live near the airport say they hear a 'relentless' roar of planes overhead—but none of those flights are commercial. Instead, Van Nuys serves private air travel, and it's where celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Elon Musk store their private jets.
Van Nuys is also the third most polluting private airport in the world, according to a new study from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). It's also just one example of the way private jet use has been growing, particularly in the United States. Of the 20 largest airports for private jet use, 18 are located in the U.S., including Van Nuys, Palm Beach International Airport, and New Jersey's Teterboro Airport, which is just 12 miles from midtown Manhattan. (The other two top airports for private jets were located in France.)
Private jets come with a huge carbon footprint. One typical private jet emits the same amount of greenhouse gasses per year as 177 cars. And the use of private jets has been increasing. ICCT estimates that private jets produced up to 19.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in 2023, a 25% increase over the past decade—and equivalent to driving nearly 50 billion miles in an average gas car.
Aviation overall accounts for 2.5% of the world's emissions. But how you fly can change your personal carbon footprint. On a commercial flight, those spacious business-class seats are responsible for up to five times as many CO2 emissions as seats in economy. That means people who take private jets, which typically have between six and 19 seats, are responsible for an even bigger share of emissions.
Private jet use accounts for about 2% of global aviation emissions. In 2023, global private jet flights collectively emitted more greenhouse gasses than all flights departing from London's Heathrow Airport, which is the busiest airport in Europe.
Private jet flights also tend to be quick jaunts: less than 900 kilometers, and lasting fewer than two hours. (Short haul flights produce a disproportionate amount of emissions, accounting for about a third of aviation's total carbon footprint.)
And most of the private jet flights happen, or at least start in, the U.S. Two-thirds of all private jet flights in the world departed from U.S. airports in 2023, accounting for 55% of all private jet emissions globally. Private jet use here has made headlines multiple times, as people have tracked Taylor Swift's personal plane journeys or the fact that Starbucks CEO Brian Niccols would be using a business jet (a type of private jet) to commute from his home in Newport Beach, California, to the company's headquarters in Seattle.
The U.S. is so flush with private jets that Florida and Texas together were the source of more private jet flights and greenhouse gas emissions than the entire European Union.
When it comes to curbing private jet use, some policymakers have floated the idea of taxing private jet emissions or fuels. In 2023, Congress introduced legislation to raise private jet fuel taxes from $0.22 to $1.95 per gallon, which would essentially be $200 per metric ton of a private jet's CO2 emissions. While that proposal didn't gain much traction, the tax proposal has recently been reintroduced.
Such a tax, the ICCT report estimated, could generate $3 billion annually for decarbonization efforts. 'Given the slow pace of technological progress,' said Dan Rutherford, ICCT's Senior Director of Research, in a statement, 'it's reasonable to charge ultrawealthy travelers more for their pollution.'

Jul. 1—MORGANTOWN — Mountain Line Transit Authority will reduce services on four current bus routes starting today due to cuts requested by West Run and West Virginia University. According to Mountain Line CEO Maria Smith, the changes affect Route 30 West Run, Route 38 Blue & Gold, Route 44 Valley View and Route 6 Gold Line. For the Route 30 West Run, summer service will be discontinued beginning today. Service will resume Aug. 20 and run from 7:10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday with no evening runs. Late-night service on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights will remain unchanged. Route 38 Blue & Gold will run on a reduced schedule over the summer, operating from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday with no weekend service. Regular service, including university breaks, will resume Aug. 20. "We looked at the ridership trends, and summer service just wasn't sustainable with the requested budget cuts, " Smith said during the last Mountain Line board meeting. "Admissions are down, and that affects demand." Route 44 Valley View will not operate at all during the summer. It will resume Aug. 20, running during WVU's fall and spring sessions and university breaks. For the Route 6 Gold Line, subsidized by WVU, the Sunday service will be eliminated. The Gold Line will continue to run Monday through Saturday as usual. Smith said the changes follow budget adjustments requested by West Run and WVU due to financial constraints and declining ridership in some areas. "These service eliminations are a result of requested cuts in service by WVU and West Run, " Smith said in a statement. Riders are encouraged to plan ahead and look for alternative routes to meet their transportation needs. Flights across the country were halted Tuesday as severe thunderstorms were expected to batter the East Coast, affecting millions of travelers close to the holiday weekend. Ground stops and delays were issued at Newark Liberty International Airport and LaGuardia Airport in the New York City area, as well as at airports in Boston, Washington D.C., Philadelphia and Orlando, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). LaGuardia Airport had about 180 flights canceled and 400 delayed, according to the site. Tuesday's expected storms come as many people are flying out of major airport hubs or driving ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend. A flood watch was in effect for the Washington, D.C., area, and heavy rains were expected in New York City.

Christian Pulisic was supposed to be in St. Louis on Tuesday, preparing to play in the national soccer team's Gold Cup semifinal with Guatemala. Instead he was standing under a freeway overpass in Culver City playing with a bunch of kids. 'This is kind of what I was, you know, born to do,' the former and perhaps future captain of the national team said. 'Having this platform and being here to inspire, hopefully, the next generation and do this for kids, it's special.' Advertisement Pulisic, 26, isn't far removed from being a kid himself, one who grew up learning the game on mini fields not too different from the one he was opening Tuesday. But for Pulisic soccer is no longer a child's game, it's a business. And that has taken a lot of fun out of it. So when Pulisic, the national team's active leader in both appearances (78) and goals (35), decided to pass up this summer's Gold Cup, the last major competition before next year's World Cup, he was widely pilloried as selfish and egotistical by former national team players including Clint Dempsey, Tim Howard and Landon Donovan. He played a career-high 3,650 minutes in all competition for AC Milan last season, leading the team with 11 goals and nine assists in Serie A play while appearing in 118 games for club and country in the last 22 months. He needed a break to rest both body and mind before the World Cup, when he'll be the focus of a U.S. team playing the tournament at home for the first time in 32 years. So after consulting with U.S. Soccer and national team coach Mauricio Pochettino, he took it, offering to play in two June friendlies — an offer Pochettino declined — but turning down an invitation to play in the Gold Cup. The reaction was swift and hurtful, with many critics accusing Pulisic of turning his back on his country. But events like Tuesday's clearly rekindle his passion for soccer by reminding him of what the game still looks like through a child's eyes. 'To see the joy that it brings to kids' faces and to give them a free space to just come and play and enjoy the game like I used to when I was a kid, that's what it's all about,' he said. 'When I was around their age, that's when I really grew the love for the game.' Getting back to those basics after what has been one of the most trying months of his professional career has been a breath of fresh air and it showed because Pulisic, whose smiles are rare and generally sarcastic, was wearing a wide and sincere one Tuesday. The play space he was visiting is the second Christian Pulisic Stomping Grounds facility in the U.S., one developed in conjunction with the global sports brand Puma. But having the captain of the men's national team come to christen the site, then engage some three dozen players, ages 9 to 13, in training drills, was priceless. 'There's no words for it,' he said. 'The top player in the U.S.? It's amazing. To get to play with him? That's a cherry on top.' The nonprofit club, Colocho said, is dedicated to ending the pay-for-play model that has made soccer too expensive for many kids. The Pulisic-Puma partnership will help with that. 'This is a start,' he said. 'Coming from a background where soccer is difficult to afford, this is going to be one of those stepping [stones] that we work with.' 'I scored on him.' Cameron Carr, 9, agreed. 'It's a very big deal,' he said of Pulisic's visit. Asked whether he'd be happier if Pulisic was in St. Louis practicing with the national team, as so many critics had demanded, Cameron grew confused. To him the answer was as obvious as the question was stupid. 'I'm very happy that he's taking his time to meet with us kids when he could be training,' he said.
