‘Pingkian: Isang Musikal' returns for Tanghalang Pilipino's 39th season this September
The powerful production once again brings to life the brilliance and bravery of Emilio Jacinto, the young revolutionary known as the "Brains of the Katipunan."
The musical opens on September 12 and will run until October 12 at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez in the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex, Pasay City.
Written by Palanca Award-winner Juan Ekis, with music by Gawad Buhay-recognized composer Ejay Yatco and directed by theater stalwart Jenny Jamora, "Pingkian" delivers a riveting portrayal of Jacinto's passion, ideals, and ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of Filipino freedom. The musical explores the complexities of youth, leadership, and nationhood in the final years of the Philippine Revolution and the early stages of the Philippine-American War.
At the heart of the musical is actor Vic Robinson, reprising his critically acclaimed role as Emilio Jacinto, also known by his nom de guerre 'Pingkian'—a Tagalog term for a flint that sparks fire. Through a series of dreamlike flashbacks and fevered hallucinations, audiences witness Jacinto confront his past, his beliefs, and the ghosts of revolutionaries who shaped the nation's history.
Joining Robinson is a stellar ensemble: Gab Pangilinan as Catalina de Jesus and Florencio Reyes, Tex Ordoñez-De Leon as Josefa Dizon, Kakki Teodoro as Jose Rizal, and Paw Castillo as Andres Bonifacio, with Almond Bolante, Joshua Cadeliña, and Marco Viaña rounding out the principal cast. The ensemble also features standout performers from the Philippine theater scene, bringing dynamic energy and movement under the choreography of Jomelle Era.
Visually and sonically, the production is a feast. The design team includes Carlo Villafuerte Pagunaling (Production Design), D Cortezano (Lighting), GA Fallarme and JM Jimenez (Projection), and TJ Ramos (Sound). The technical ensemble, led by Kiefer Sison, ensures the seamless fusion of historical narrative and modern theatrical storytelling.
"Pingkian" stands out not only for its artistic excellence but also for its deep cultural resonance. The musical celebrates Jacinto's intellect and revolutionary contributions, including his authorship of the Kartilya ng Katipunan—the seminal manifesto of the movement, which emphasized liberty, equality, and moral conduct. One of the youngest leaders in the Katipunan, Jacinto became a general at 17, shaping the ideological core of the revolution with pen and sword.
This revival aims to ignite a deeper connection with today's audiences, especially younger generations, reminding them of the cost of freedom and the power of youth to shape history. It is a timely homage to a hero whose short but meaningful life continues to inspire patriotism and critical reflection on Filipino identity.

Christine Allado takes on Whitney Houston's role in PH staging of ‘The Bodyguard: The Musical'
Manila is about to witness a dazzling homecoming. Christine Allado, the internationally acclaimed Filipina performer who made her mark in London's West End and global concert halls, is set to return to the Philippine stage as Rachel Marron in 9 Works Theatrical's staging of 'The Bodyguard: The Musical'—a bold, music-packed reimagining of the 1992 film of the same name that catapulted Whitney Houston into cinematic legend. Set to the timeless hits 'I Will Always Love You,' 'I Have Nothing,' and 'Run to You,' The Bodyguard: The Musical' tells the gripping story of a superstar under threat and the unlikely romance that unfolds between her and her bodyguard. The production is set to open on September 26 at The Proscenium Theater in Rockwell Center, Makati City. It marks the first-ever theatrical venture of the property group, signaling its entry into the world of performing arts. Allado has long carried the Filipino flag across world stages, having played Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in 'Hamilton's' original West End cast to headlining 'In The Heights' and 'The Prince of Egypt,' which earned her a nomination at the Grammy Awards. Now, she will bring the same world-class presence home, ready to channel the strength, vulnerability, and vocal firepower that the role of Rachel Marron demands. 'It's a full-circle moment. To bring this kind of production to Manila and portray a role made iconic by Whitney Houston, in front of my kababayans, is deeply meaningful," she said. No stranger to the Philippines, Allado, the daughter of lawyer Jojo Allado and Letty Guevara, was born and raised in Manila. She had studied theater at the University of the Philippines and undergone workshops with Trumpets Playshop where she acted in 'Hairspray,' 'Phantom of the Opera,' and the longest running Filipino musical, 'Joseph The Dreamer,' Like many actors looking for greener pastures, she moved to Hong Kong to work at Hong Kong Disneyland, then migrated to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music, where she earned her Masters in musical theater in 2013. Allado has since performed in sold-out concerts with Andrea Bocelli across Europe and Asia, to co-starring with Lea Salonga and Bernadette Peters in the West End run of 'Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends,' among many others. She currently stars as Meat in West End's production of 'We Will Rock You.' This year, she's also set to lead the West End premiere of 'Jo: Little Women The Musical.' On Instagram Friday, 9 Works Theatrical posted a video of Allado singing 'I Will Always Love You,' one of Houston's signature songs used in the film and the musical. However, as early as February, Allado had posted on Instagram a video of her singing 'I Have Nothing,' in what she dubbed a rehearsal for a concert in Mexico. The song is among Houston's top hits that was also used in the film and musical. A long time coming In an interview with GMA News Online, 'The Bodyguard: The Musical' director Robbie Guevara shared they got the rights for the musical as early as 2019 for 9 Works Theatrical's 2020 season. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, put everything on hold. Santi Santamaria, managing director and executive producer of 9 Works Theatrical, added, '[It's] a long time coming, this show.' In the past, 9 Works Theatrical has staged other award-winning musicals, including "Grease," "La Cage aux Folles," and "Tick, Tick... Boom!." In 2024, the company staged "Rent," and "Once on This Island," followed by "Liwanag sa Dilim" earlier this year. According to Guevara, he first saw "The Bodyguard" musical in one of its West End runs after it premiered at Adelphi Theater in London in December 2012, while he saw the film version in a movie house in 1992. He added that his favorite song from the film and musical is Houston's 'I Have Nothing.' 'I love all of Whitney's popular songs, so I enjoyed it. I wasn't a huge fan, but I didn't dislike [the film] naman,' he shared. He also mentioned there are no more auditions for the musical's other roles, 'All done na.' As for the actor who would play Frank Farmer in the local production (Kevin Costner played him in the film), Guevara remained tight-lipped, noting that it will be revealed soon. Aside from Guevara, 'The Bodyguard: The Musical' creative team is composed of Arnold Trinidad as choreographer, Mio Infante as scenographer, Daniel Bartolome as musical director, and Shakira Villa-Symes as lighting designer. 'The usual team,' he said, whose recent directorial job was the original Filipino musical 'Liwanag Sa Dilim.' For now, theater fans can look forward to seeing Allado in the landmark musical featuring Houston's other hits like 'One Moment In Time,' 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody,' 'I'm Every Woman,' 'Run to You,' 'How Will I Know,' 'Queen of the Night,' 'Saving All My Love for You,' and 'Greatest Love of All.' Angelo Maristela: His art seeks to inspire and give back to God
Meet Angelo Maristela, the international artist whose paintings have graced homes and offices in the U.S. and the Middle East. Angelo, his wife Lynn and their three children–sons Racco and Renfrew, and daughter Ressu—lived in this Middle Eastern country for seven years since 2009. Within this luxurious Arab monarchy, he worked for a wealthy businessman who owned posh residences, hotels and luxury buildings. He painted, produced one abstract art after another which were hung in the buildings and chains of restaurants his employer owned. "I must have created 300 paintings," said Angelo when interviewed by The FilAm. "I must have created a portfolio of artworks that I consider part of the lasting legacy I left with the nation that became home to me and my family for over seven years." Angelo also made history as the only Filipino artist, at the time, to be accepted into an exclusive Qatari art group, composed mainly of Arab artists. His works were featured frequently in magazines, newspapers, and online publications. He held several exhibitions in Qatar, most of them solo shows. One was a horse-themed exhibit sponsored by one of the country's most powerful figures—the chairman of Qatar's largest conglomerate. The exhibition took place at a vast commercial facility in Al Samariya, which also housed a horse track and riding school. The event received coverage in Qatar TV and various print publications, further cementing Angelo's reputation in the region. Since relocating to the United States in 2016, Angelo—though relatively new to the American art scene—has already made a notable impact. He has participated in various exhibitions across the country: New Jersey, New York, Nevada, and Florida. One of his most significant projects was a massive 27-by-8-foot mural displayed at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Times Square, New York City. Centered on themes of environmental conservation and global challenges, the mural, which was installed shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, proved hauntingly prophetic. It depicted scenes of lockdowns, wildfires, and species extinction—realities that soon unfolded in the months that followed. "That's the best time for me to paint," he said. Realism is his realm. His lifelike reimaging of General Douglas MacArthur was recently unveiled at a West Point ceremony where it was bequeathed to the permanent collection of the U.S. Military's prestigious museum. He finally completed portraits of four statesmen and generals Douglas MacArthur, Ulysses Grant, George Patton, and Dwight Eisenhower commissioned by a prominent political personality. He and his family were granted permanent residency under the EB1-A category— the Alien of Extraordinary Ability visa also known as the Einstein Visa reserved for individuals who are exceptional in their fields. Awards and milestones Raised by a single mother, young Angelo often found himself alone in their modest apartment in Manila while his mother worked. Though kind neighbors occasionally checked in, he spent many hours by himself, finding solace and stimulation in scraps of paper, pencils, pens, and scissors. The paper figures he fashioned lacked faces, prompting him to invent and draw them—an exercise that sharpened his imagination and ignited a lifelong passion for portraiture. By his teenage years, he was already earning from commissioned portrait works. His academic excellence was evident—he consistently earned top marks for his projects and was frequently exempted from exams. His professors recognized his talent early on and continue to hold him in high regard to this day. Between 2017 and 2018, he received special recognitions. He was awarded a Citation of Honor by the Borough of Queens, New York, acknowledging his excellence in the arts and his civic engagement. Additionally, he was honored with the Award of Excellence for the Arts by PACCAL, recognizing his artistic influence and dedication to the cultural landscape. In 2019, Angelo achieved another milestone when he was named the recipient of the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Award for Excellence in the Arts presented by the Knights of Rizal organization. His artistic inclinations extended beyond the canvas. In his youth, he dabbled in acting, appeared in films, theater, and television shows, and took on roles in ramp, fashion, print, and TV ad commercial modeling. He also possesses a gift for singing and voice mimicry, further underscoring his diverse creative talents. "My artwork is geared toward giving back to God for the talent that He blessed me with," he would say in response to praise about his art. "My goal is not just to provide a feast for the eyes but also to inspire." Artist's statement: I am a hyperrealist but the vastness of art inspires me to go beyond the confines of a single style. I have since expanded into contemporary art, dedicating years to researching and developing a distinctive form of abstraction that can only be associated with me. The materials I use are not ordinarily found in stores—they are the result of meticulous experimentation.
