Images of 'exhausted South Korean firefighters' bear signs of AI generation

"They are truly, truly admirable," reads the Korean-language caption of an image shared on Threads on March 27, 2025.
It shows a group of firemen -- some sitting on the ground, others standing in the rain -- looking completely exhausted, with part of a fire engine visible behind them.
In a separate post the following day, the Threads user shared another image of a firefighter -- his face smudged with soot and an inferno blazing in the background -- with the caption: "This single photo says it all. They are working incredibly hard... Please do your best until the very end."
The pictures circulated as more than a dozen fires scorched wide swathes of South Korea's southeast and forced around 37,000 people to flee (archived link). Thirty-one people have been killed in the fires, the country's largest and deadliest on record, as of April 4 (archived link).

Visual anomalies
The firefighters' clothing and the fire engine in the circulating images differ from how they appear in by AFP photojournalists Anthony Wallace and Yasuyoshi Chiba amid efforts to contain the deadly wildfires.

"Both images have clear visual artefacts as AI-generated," Siwei Lyu, director of the University at Buffalo's Media Forensic Lab, told AFP in an April 4 email (archived link).
Lyu said figures and objects in the first image, including the firefighters' clothing and the fire engine, are misshapen and "lack realistic details".
In the second image, there is an "extra hand near the glove".

In Germany, at least 3 dead and several people injured in train derailment

A regional passenger train derailed in southern Germany on Sunday, July 27, killing at least three people and seriously injuring others, police told AFP. Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, roughly 158 kilometers (98 miles) west of Munich, remains under investigation. Photos from the scene showed parts of the train on its side as rescuers climbed atop the carriages. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. Roughly 100 people were onboard the train when at least two carriages derailed in a forested area around 6:10 pm. (1610 GMT). Storms passed through the area before the crash and investigators were seeking to determine if the rain was a factor. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in a post on social platform X, said he mourned the victims and gave his condolences to their families. Deutsche Bahn, Germany's main national railway operator, said in a statement that it was cooperating with investigators. The company also offered its condolences.

Motor rally accident kills three spectators in France

Three spectators died in central France on Saturday, July 26, after a car driven by a 22-year-old woman racer veered off the road during an auto rally, authorities said. The driver of the modified Peugeot 208 that hit the spectators and her 51-year-old woman co-driver were taken to hospital but without life-threatening injuries, prosecutors said. Two men died at the scene and prosecutors later announced that a third man, airlifted to a hospital, succumbed to his injuries. The three killed were two brothers, aged 70 and 60, and a 44-year-old man, according to the public prosecutor's office, which opened an investigation. Several people who witnessed the accident near the town of Ambert in central France were in shock, a local official told Agence France-Presse (AFP). In total, a dozen people were taken to a psychological support unit set up in the nearby village of Saint-Just. The accident occurred around 11 am local time on Saturday. "This is a tragedy for the world of racing," said Joel Mathurin, the local prefect. Regional prosecutor Laure Moisset said the accident was "very violent." In a short statement, the rally organizers said that the race was halted at 10:49 am. All spectators were asked to leave the scene and the event's award ceremony was canceled. Dozens of firefighters and police were dispatched to the scene. The investigation was "in its early stages," the prosecutor said. The Peugeot 208 car was to be examined. And the road where the accident took place, almost a straight line according to authorities, has been closed. Prosecutors said they would have to determine whether the spectators were in an authorized area during the rally. "I prefer to remain cautious," Moisset told reporters. "It is still a little too early to be precise," she added. Organized since 1965, the motor rally attracted 167 teams for its 32 nd edition. In the rally held last year, a race marshal died.
