Cascadia subduction zone earthquake could be even worse than feared

When an earthquake rips along the Cascadia Subduction Zone fault, much of the U.S. west coast could shake violently for five minutes, and tsunami waves as tall as 100 feet could barrel toward shore. But that's just the start of the expected horrors.
Even if coastal towns in Northern California, Oregon and Washington withstand that seismic onslaught, new research suggests floodwaters could seep into many of these vulnerable communities for good. That's because entire coastal shorelines are expected to drop by as much as 6½ feet when the earthquake strikes, according to new research, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
Researchers analyzed seismic and flood modeling to produce some of the most detailed estimates of how the Cascadia earthquake would drop — or subside — coastal shorelines and found that it could affect more than double the number of people, structures and roads currently at risk. The effect will also worsen over time, as intensifying climate change raises sea levels further.
'This lesser talked about hazard is going to persist for decades or centuries after the earthquake,' said Tina Dura, the study's lead author. 'The tsunami will come in and wash away and it's going to have big impacts, don't get me wrong, but the lasting change of the frequency of flooding … that's going to have to be dealt with.'
Dura said geologic fossil evidence shows that previous Cascadia earthquakes immediately dropped the land level and turned dry ground into tidal mudflats in estuaries along the Pacific Northwest.
'That's going to happen again and we've built up a lot of those areas,' said Dura, who is an assistant professor of geosciences at Virginia Tech University. 'That's how we have ports there ... and that's where we built towns, and all that area is gonna drop down maybe over a meter, up to two meters.'
The Cascadia Subduction Zone fault, which runs offshore along North America's west coast from Northern California to northern Vancouver Island, represents a looming threat. The fault has the capability to produce a magnitude-9.0 earthquake, and a large temblor is expected there at least once every 450-500 years, on average. The last of those major quakes occurred in 1700.
The National Seismic Hazard Model suggests there is a 15% chance a magnitude-8.0 earthquake or stronger will rupture along the zone's margin within the next 50 years.
When the fault rips, experts have said it will precipitate the worst natural disaster in the nation's history. A 2022 state and federal planning exercise for a Cascadia earthquake predicted about 14,000 fatalities, more than 100,000 injuries and the collapse of about 620,000 buildings in the Pacific Northwest, including 100 hospitals and 2,000 schools.
The new research suggests that coastal planners must seriously reckon not only for the threat of intense shaking and tsunami waves, but also for the long-term reshaping and rapid sinking of the coastline itself.
'There's the flood itself and then there's the basically permanent change to land level at the coast and that has a big impact for what those communities have to plan for,' said Harold Tobin, the director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network and a professor at the University of Washington. 'Where are you going to put your school or hospital? Where are you going to build your transportation network? I think it's important to take the long view.'
After the earthquake, Dura's research suggests, large portions of towns along the Pacific Northwest coastline, such as Seaside, Oregon; Westport, Washington; and Aberdeen, Washington, would be expected to flood at least once every 100 years, if not more often.
The study also points out that sea level rise is accelerating as climate change intensifies, and the effects of post-earthquake flooding could worsen in the future.
Global mean sea levels have risen by about 8 to 9 inches since 1880, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Sea level rise is expected to dramatically accelerate in coming decades because of global warming, with NOAA predicting another 10 to 12 inches on average by midcentury.

While land in some regions of the U.S., like the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, is slowly sinking in a process called subsidence, parts of the Pacific Northwest have been rising because of continental uplift. That rise in land level has offset some of the sea level rise to date.
The uplift is the result of stress building up within the tectonic plates that form the Cascadia subduction zone offshore. At the subduction zone, the Juan de Fuca plate is being forced beneath the continental North American plate. This causes the North American plate to bow upward slightly, pushing the land level higher.
Right now, the subduction zone fault is quiet and building stress. When the fault ruptures, the bowing of the plate will release and cause a rapid subsidence of the land level, essentially erasing centuries of uplift in an instant.
'That happens in minutes, and it can be on the order of meters,' Dura said. 'The land persists down, and that can be for, like I said, decades and centuries. And so any areas that are kind of on the cusp of the floodplain are now in it."

According to the WHO, in 2021, higher-than-optimal BMI — body mass index, a ratio of weight to height — caused an estimated 3.7 million deaths from these noncommunicable has often been said that a sedentary lifestyle may lead to obesity. However, new research in a wide range of populations suggests that excessive energy intake, rather than a lack of activity, is the main driver of weight gain.A new study, is published in PNAS, suggests that the high rates of obesity associated with economic development are most likely caused by a high calorie diet containing a large proportion of ultra-processed M. Importantly, it reveals that economic development brings with it both opportunities and risks: improved access to food, but also increased exposure to obesogenic diets.'Obesity: Is it driven by diet type or activity levels?For the 4,213 adults in their study, the researchers used two different measures of obesity — BMI and body fat percentage, which refers to the proportion of fat to total body were from 34 populations over six continents, and had a wide range of lifestyles. They included hunter-gatherers, farmers (both arable and pastoral), and people from industrialized determined three types of energy expenditure:to estimate total energy expenditure (TEE) they used the doubly labeled water methodthey measured basal energy expenditure (BEE), the amount of energy used to sustain life while at rest, also called basal metabolic rate) using indirect calorimetry or, when no measures were available, estimated it from body sizethey estimated active energy expenditure (AEE) as 0.9 (TEE) – BEE (to assume that 10% of daily calories are expended on digesting and metabolizing food).Absolute body mass, body fat percentage, and BMI were greater, and obesity was more common, in more economically developed populations. While that holds true in absolute terms, once adjustments were made for body size, the differences in energy expenditure (especially activity energy expenditure, or AEE) were not as stark as presumed.''The key takeaway,' he continued, 'and this is a very important consideration, is that industrialized populations are not necessarily less active, they often have larger bodies that require more energy. However, they also consume more calories, particularly from highly processed and energy-dense foods. This imbalance, higher intake relative to energy needs, appears to be the more critical factor in rising obesity levels.'Processed foods encourage overconsumptionHaving compared the patterns of energy expenditure in the widely varying populations, the researchers concluded that increased energy intake is the primary factor that links overweight and obesity to economic suggest that differences in the quality and quantity of food may be key. I do encourage my patients to exercise to preserve muscle and help burn calories, but I emphasize that if they do not eat the right foods, they will see little weight loss.'Holland advised that, 'ultimately, this study reinforces that health isn't just about 'calories in versus calories out,' but also about the quality of the calories we consume, emphasizing that what we eat may be just as important, if not more so, than how many calories we take in or burn.'He suggested that policy changes could help people lead healthier lives.'Governments can play a pivotal role in shaping food environments and public health outcomes,' said Holland. 'Policies that subsidize healthy food production (e.g., fruits, vegetables, legumes), restrict the marketing of junk food to children, and improve food labeling can help guide healthier choices. Investments in infrastructure, such as safe parks, pedestrian-friendly streets, and community centers, can also promote physical activity.''Furthermore,' he added, 'preventive health programs and equitable access to primary care are crucial for identifying and addressing obesity early, particularly in underserved populations. Public policy is a powerful lever to make the healthier choice the easier one.'

A new study has turned common conceptions of what causes obesity on its head, revealing that reduced physical activity may not have as large a role in our size as our diets. The study, published this week in PNAS, challenged common wisdom that people in developed nations such as the U.S. are relatively sedentary and burn fewer calories than people in less industrialized countries. Instead, it found that people living in developed nations burned the same amount of calories as people living in less-developed regions, such as farmers, herders and hunters and gatherers, who have much more active lifestyles. The report, which looked at energy expenditure and metabolic rates of more than 4,000 men and women from a variety of nations, suggests that inactivity is not the main cause of obesity both in the U.S. and elsewhere. The groundbreaking research found that what people eat 'plays a far greater role than reduced expenditure in the elevated prevalence of obesity associated with economic development.' Herman Pontzer, a professor and senior author of the study, told the Washington Post that the report's findings are important because they help health officials better know what causes obesity, leading to more successful treatments for patients. Pontzer and his 80-plus co-authors gathered data from labs around the world that use doubly labeled water in metabolism studies, which allows researchers to exactly determine how someone expends energy. The researchers calculated total energy expenditures for 4,213 men and women from 34 countries or cultural groups, and found they were similar, regardless of whether someone was an American office worker or a hunter-gatherer. Regardless of where they lived or how they spent their time, all the people spent similar amounts of energy and burned nearly the same amount of calories each day, the study found. Instead of finding that increased exercise will decrease obesity, the study suggests that 'increased energy intake has been roughly 10 times more important than declining total energy expenditure in driving the modern obesity crisis,' the authors wrote. Meaning, populations with greater rates of obesity are simply eating too much – and likely eating the wrong kinds of foods, Pontzer explained. 'This study confirms what I've been saying, which is that diet is the key culprit in our current [obesity] epidemic,' Barry Popkin, a professor at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an obesity expert, told the Post. 'This is a well-done study,' he added, to which other experts agreed. 'It's clear from this important new research and other studies that changes to our food, not our activity, are the dominant drivers of obesity,' Dariush Mozaffarian, the director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University in Boston, said. Pontzer, a co-author of the study, emphasized that the study's findings do not mean exercise is unimportant to our overall health. 'We know that exercise is essential for health. This study doesn't change that,' Pontzer said. The study, however, does suggest that to combat obesity, 'public health efforts need to focus on diet,' specifically ultra-processed foods, Pontzer said.

A doomsday tsunami is likely to strike the US in the near future, according to new research led by researchers at Virginia Tech. The study, published in the Proceedings Of The National Academy Of Sciences, found that a devastating earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) in America's Pacific Northwest is almost assured to take place by 2100, with a 37 per cent chance it'll happen at any point in the next 50 years. If an earthquake between 8.0 and 9.0 in magnitude struck today, scientists warn that a 100-foot mega tsunami would wipe out most of the West Coast, as the coastline would drop by almost eight feet instantaneously. Doomsday: Scientists say a tsunami could hit U.S. as massive earthquake is due by 2100 (pictured: aftermath of the 9.0 quake that struck Japan in 2011) The CSZ is a nearly 700-mile-long fault line off the west coast of North America where one tectonic plate, the Juan de Fuca Plate slides beneath another, the North American Plate. It stretches from northern Vancouver Island in Canada to the southern half of the US West Coast, running along the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) estimated that there would be 5,800 deaths from a CSZ earthquake alone and another 8,000 due to the mega tsunami it would unleash. Professor Tina Dura, the lead author of the study, said: 'This is going to be a very catastrophic event for the US, for sure. The tsunami is going to come in, and it's going to be devastating.' Danger zone: The Cascadia zone, which sits under Washington, Oregon, and northern California, is said to be 'overdue' for another major earthquake. The last one struck in 1700 By 2100, climate change is predicted to raise sea levels by as much as two feet. If the Cascadia Subduction Zone doesn't suffer another mega earthquake until then, it will likely amplify the devastation and flooding beyond the damage expected in 2025. The 2022 emergency report from FEMA projected that there would be more than 100,000 people injured and over 618,000 buildings damaged or destroyed during the next major CSZ earthquake. That damage would include more than 2,000 schools and 100 critical facilities along the West Coast, costing the country more than $134billion. Disastrous: If the CSZ ruptured, it could cause a magnitude-9 earthquake throughout the region. The darker areas mark the areas that would receive the most damage, extending inland, where the devastation would be more moderate The new study also predicted that the West Coast would be reshaped for centuries. The earthquake and mega tsunami would radically expand 100-year floodplains in Washington, Oregon, and California by as much as 115 square miles. Floodplains are areas expected to suffer historic flooding at least once every 100 years. If those regions suddenly expanded by more than 100 miles, more homes, roads, and local infrastructure would fall into dangerous flood zones. However, in the worst-case scenarios where subsidence (sinking of the ground) is at its highest, the researchers estimated that their flood zone predictions could more than double. 'After the tsunami comes and eventually recedes, the land is going to persist at lower levels,' Dura told BBC Science Focus. 'That floodplain footprint is going to be altered for decades or even centuries.' The Cascadia Subduction Zone is becoming a major area of concern now because of the growing amount of time that's passed since its last major seismic event. The last major earthquake struck on January 26, 1700. Historians and scientists estimate that it was a magnitude 9.0 earthquake which unleashed a mega tsunami that destroyed the village of Pachena Bay in British Columbia. Records of the event show that waves up to 100 feet high struck just 30 minutes after the quake, leaving no survivors. Scientists have estimated that the CSZ builds up into a major earthquake every 400 to 600 years, meaning it's already been 325 years since the last cataclysmic event. 'You can imagine, during the next earthquake, when the land drops down, you're going to suddenly have to contend with multiple centuries of equivalent sea level rise in minutes,' Dura warned.
