Tengku Zafrul receives DPPN award at Penang governor's birthday
The award was presented at Dewan Sri Pinang, recognising Tengku Zafrul's contributions in strengthening Malaysia's economy and attracting strategic investments, particularly in Penang.
'I am truly grateful to His Excellency the Governor of Penang for this honour. MITI will continue to strive to ensure that Penang remains a hub for investment and trade,' he told reporters after the ceremony.
Tengku Zafrul has been instrumental in positioning Penang as a key player in high-tech and semiconductor industries. A former CIMB Group CEO, he holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Accounting from the University of Bristol and a Master of Arts in Finance and Management from the University of Exeter.
A total of 389 individuals received state awards, including six Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (DGPN), two Darjah Yang Mulia Pangkuan Negeri (DMPN), and 29 Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN) recipients on the second day of the investiture. - Bernama

MITI in talks to resolve Osaka Expo pavilion dispute
KUALA LUMPUR: The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry is in talks with a company that accused it of using design work without compensation for the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said in a written parliamentary reply that discussions were ongoing to resolve the matter and safeguard Malaysia's participation in the event. "To ensure that this matter can be resolved amicably between both parties, the Ministry is holding active discussions with the company. "This is important to ensure that Malaysia's participation in Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan is not affected," he said. He said all parties involved in the project underwent a government-set selection process. "MITI will continue to strengthen its internal guidelines as needed, particularly by enhancing oversight of all aspects of partner selection — especially for high-impact projects that reflect the country's image on the international stage," he added. Current Media Group (CMG) founder Fey Ilyas first raised the issue publicly on April 25, highlighting alleged similarities between its proposal and the final design adopted for the Malaysia Pavilion. MITI launched an internal probe on April 26 but the company said it received no further contact. It filed legal action on July 17. The next day, MITI said the probe had concluded.

TNB receives RM609.03m additional tax assessment for 2023
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has received a notice of additional assessment amounting to RM609.03 million from the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRB) for the 2023 assessment year. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the utility company said the notice was issued on July 30, 2025. 'In light of the Federal Court's decision on a similar notice issued to TNB for the 2018 assessment year, TNB is currently evaluating its available legal options to address this notice of additional assessment,' the company said. It added that the evaluation also considers the fact that TNB has already applied for investment allowance under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967, which includes claims for the 2023 year of assessment. — Bernama

Anwar announced that it was decided via a phone conversation with Trump at 6.50am. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (July 31): United States (US) President Donald Trump will announce the new tariff rate to be imposed on Malaysia latest by tomorrow, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, announced that it was decided via a phone conversation with Trump at 6.50am. 'We are also discussing the tariff issue on the spirit and principle of free trade. This also applies to the series of negotiations involving the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) with the US Trade Representative and Secretary of Commerce. 'We hope that (the tariff decision) will not burden our nation's economy,' he said in his 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) speech in Parliament today. The US is scheduled to impose a 25 per cent import tariff on all Malaysian goods starting Aug 1, 2025. Anwar said Trump also expressed his gratitude to Malaysia for playing an effective and outstanding role to resolve the Thailand-Cambodia conflict. 'In my response, I said this was due to the Asean consensus and the positive attitude of both countries as well as the cooperation shown by the US, especially Trump, and (China's President) Xi Jinping,' he said. He said the US President also confirmed his attendance at the 47th Asean Summit to be held in Kuala Lumpur in October. Meanwhile, MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia is waiting for Trump's official reply tomorrow. 'After that, a joint statement will be issued by the Office of the USTR and MITI to elaborate on the matters agreed on,' he said in a post on social media platform X today.
