Massena school board member shares concerns about weapons in school

Jun. 17—MASSENA — The Massena Central School Board has approved an agreement with the village to continue providing a school resource officer, but not without a concern from one of the board members.
Although he voted to approve the agreement, Robert M. LeBlanc said he was concerned about the SRO carrying a weapon on school grounds.
Michael A. Flynn, the Massena Police Department's juvenile officer, serves as the district's school resource officer under an agreement between the district and village.
"You know, in the United States, the number one cause of death for kids are guns. So, I don't like guns on a property. I think having a gun permanently on a property is not right. It's not something I like," he said.
LeBlanc said he likes the students being exposed to a police officer.
"We're lucky to have a good guy. Mr. Flynn is a good guy, he said.
But, having a weapon on school grounds didn't sit right with him.
"I like when they come and they share their life with the police officer. But, I don't like guns," LeBlanc said.
He said the police department was close enough that they could respond in an emergency situation.
"I don't like the idea of the SRO. I think with the police station being in the middle of the school district, if there's an incident, there's going to be a team, not one guy, who's going to react to the incident. So, I don't think the idea of having an SRO is good," he said.
However, LeBlanc joined with the board in unanimously approving the agreement.
"I'm going to support the proposition. But, in general, I don't like guns on the property. I don't think it's a good idea," he said.
The village and school district had signed an agreement in February 2024 for Flynn to also work as the school resource officer. The initial agreement provided a school resource officer from February 2024 to June 2024, and a second agreement was for Flynn to work as an SRO from July 2024 to June 2025. Flynn serves strictly in his juvenile officer position during the summer.
Village trustees had approved the agreement, which runs from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026, during their May meeting. The school district will be paying an additional $80,000 for the school resource officer under the agreement.
"The contract with the village of Massena for our SRO shows an $80,000 increase this year. The village of Massena was arbitrarily charging us around $70,000 to $80,000. That's not the true cost of the SRO, and the village is basically requiring that if we want to maintain that relationship, that we do need to pay the full cost of the individual," Superintendent Ronald P. Burke had told school members during their May meeting.
He said the village was picking up additional costs related to the SRO.
"As you see, our SRO works on different days when school is not in session. We need to keep in mind that there is a little bit of give and take on this. We're not paying for the police vehicle. We are not paying for the equipment that the police officer has. We're not paying for the training. What we're paying for is a true cost of the personnel, not all the other materials that go along with that," Burke said.

Elon Musk launches ‘America Party' after Trump signs historic spending bill: 'Waste & graft'

Elon Musk says the two-party system is broken, and he just launched a new political party to prove it. On Saturday, Musk announced on X, the social media platform he owns, the formation of the "America Party," calling it a direct response to what he described as a corrupt political establishment that no longer represents the American people. The announcement followed a viral July 4 poll on X, where Musk asked whether voters wanted independence from what he called the "two-party (some would say uniparty) system." Over 1.2 million votes were cast, with 65.4% saying "yes." "By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it," Musk posted Saturday. "When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom." The move came just after President Donald Trump signed the "big, beautiful bill" into law Friday at the White House. The sweeping $3.3 trillion legislation includes tax cuts, infrastructure spending and stimulus measures and has drawn criticism from fiscal conservatives and libertarians. Though Musk did not reference the bill directly in his America Party posts, the timing suggests rising friction between the billionaire and the president. Musk has previously warned that unchecked spending by both parties threatens the long-term health of the economy. The new party, according to Musk's posts, will target a few key seats in Congress. The goal is to create a swing bloc powerful enough to hold the balance of power and block what Musk sees as the worst excesses of both Republicans and Democrats. Some on the right voiced concern in the comments section that a third party could split the conservative vote and help Democrats win more easily. "Your third party will disproportionately take votes from the right vs the left and give the left an easier path to power," conservative commentator Shawn Farash posted. Others, like Joey Mannarino, urged Musk to focus instead on reforming the GOP from within. Critics also pointed out that the X poll was informal, not limited to American voters and vulnerable to bots. Third parties have traditionally had a difficult time gaining ground in American politics as the system is built for two dominant parties. With the Electoral College, winner-take-all elections and strict ballot access laws, outsiders cannot meaningfully compete. Even when a third-party candidate catches fire, it rarely lasts beyond a single election cycle. One of the biggest third-party efforts in recent history was Ross Perot's 1992 run. He earned nearly 19% of the popular vote as an independent but didn't win a single Electoral College vote. It was the closest a third-party candidate got to the White House after President Teddy Roosevelt's famed Bull Moose Party run in 1912 against his onetime protégé, William Howard Taft. Others, like Ralph Nader, have tried with the Green Party, and Gary Johnson with the Libertarian Party, but no third-party candidate has come close to winning national HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPThe White House did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

F-16 escorts plane out of area after airspace incursion near Trump's golf course

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -An F-16 U.S. fighter jet on Saturday intercepted a general aviation aircraft that violated a temporary restriction of the airspace over U.S. President Donald Trump's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, the U.S military said in a statement. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said the incident, which occurred around 2:39 p.m. (1839 GMT), marked the fifth unauthorized incursion of the restricted airspace on Saturday. A spokesperson confirmed the jet was an F-16. NORAD aircraft conducted a so-called headbutt maneuver to get the civilian pilot's attention and the aircraft was safely escorted out of the area, NORAD said in a statement. The White House had no immediate comment on the incident. NORAD has reported multiple similar incidents in recent weeks, and is urging general aviation pilots to check all notifications before taking off in the area.

DHS Dismisses Palestinian Woman's Treatment In ICE Detention As 'Sob Story'

A Palestinian woman released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention on Tuesday says she and others faced mistreatment while detained. Still, the Department of Homeland Security dismissed her account as one of many 'sob stories.' 'The entire detention process was not great. I wouldn't wish this upon anybody. It was very hard, very traumatizing, and very, very difficult, is what I would say,' Ward Sakeik told CNN's Danny Freeman on Saturday morning. Sakeik, 22, a stateless person whose family is from Gaza, was born in Saudi Arabia, a country that does not grant birthright citizenship to children of foreign-born parents, according to The Guardian. She entered the U.S. legally under a tourist visa when she was 8 and was allowed to remain, as long as she regularly checked in with ICE. After getting married, she began the process of obtaining a green card, but was taken by ICE officials in February on her way back to Texas from her honeymoon in the Virgin Islands, a U.S. territory. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told CNN that Sakeik's arrest was not part of a targeted operation by ICE, but that she was flagged by Customs and Border Patrol trying to reenter the U.S. after flying over international waters. In a statement shared with HuffPost, McLaughlin said Sakeik was not 'complying with immigration policies.' 'The facts are she is in our country illegally,' McLaughlin said. 'She overstayed her visa and has had a final order by an immigration judge for over a decade.' Sakeik was released Tuesday and appeared at a press conference where she talked about her experience, saying she was handcuffed for 16 hours without any water or food on a bus. 'I was moved around like cattle, and the U.S. government attempted to dump me in a part of the world where I don't know where I'm going and what I'm doing or anything,' Sakeik said. Sakeik went on to describe her conditions, which she said included unhygienic restrooms, rusted beds and insects that bit other detained migrants. 'I was criminalized for being stateless, something that I absolutely have no control over,' she said. 'I didn't choose to be stateless. I had no choice.' She is now using her experience to advocate for others who are facing the same treatment, including women she met in detention. 'A lot of these women don't have the money for lawyers or media outreach. They come here to provide for their families and that's pretty much it,' Sakeik said. 'They're mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers. They're superheroes. They are humans and their lives hold values and I will continue to fight with them, for them, every single step of the way.' In the statement shared with HuffPost, McLaughlin said 'any claim that there is a lack of food or subprime conditions at ICE detention centers are false,' and that those who are detained are provided with proper meals, medical treatment, and opportunities to talk with family members and lawyers. 'Ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of individuals in our custody is a top priority at ICE. Meals are certified by dieticians,' McLaughlin said. 'Why does the media continue to fall for the sob stories of illegal aliens in detention and villainize ICE law enforcement?' DHS had given the same statement to Newsweek earlier this week. Sakeik's attorney, Eric Lee, responded to McLaughlin's comments Saturday morning on CNN. 'They called it a 'sob story,'' Lee said. 'I guess what we would ask the American people is, 'Who are they gonna believe, their lying eyes or the statements of the people who are responsible for carrying out what are really crimes against humanity here in the United States?'' Earlier this month, NPR published a report on inhumane conditions at ICE facilities, interviewing more than a dozen detainees, family members and lawyers who described issues like severe overcrowding and lack of food.
