In the uniformed world of the, where duty often overshadows individual stories, the life of Anthony Sober A is one such story that stands out, a journey not just of discipline and service, but of passion, transformation, and rhythm.Born on June 1, 1967, Anthony Sober joined the City Armed Reserve Police Headquarters in Bengaluru on September 6, 1991, through the sports quota. A talented footballer, he quickly became a star player for the Karnataka State Police Football Team, representing the force from 1992 to 1995 in South Zone and All India tournaments. His performances brought home trophies, certificates, and pride for the department. But it was in 1998 that his journey took a turn, one that would shape the rest of his life.With a deep curiosity for music, Sober joined theas a bugler. What began as a side interest soon became a calling. In just a short span, he mastered the bugle and then moved on to the trumpet, becoming known for his sharp technique and heartfelt performances. 'Music gave me a different kind of discipline,' he said.From Republic Day and Independence Day parades to the grand celebrations of Mysuru Dasara, Sober's trumpet has echoed across ceremonial grounds, touching hearts with soulful renditions like 'Abide With Me'. His dedication to detail made him the preferred choice for high-profile events, including those at the Raj Bhavan, where he performed for top dignitaries, including former Governor Hansraj Bhardwaj, who personally appreciated his performances.In addition to his musical duties, Sober served in critical assignments, from VIP escorts to prisoner and cash duties, often during high-alert deployments. His sincerity, sharp turnout, and composed presence made him a dependable face in every setting.Now at 59, Anthony Sober serves as the Bandmaster of the Karnataka State Police Band, a role that reflects his years of quiet commitment and musical mastery. Still playing the bugle and trumpet with the same passion that began over two decades ago, he also mentors young band members, keeping tradition alive.On April 2, 2025, his extraordinary journey was formally recognised with the, awarded for his exceptional contribution to the force. Independence Day 2025: Fort of Kittur, floral models of Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna to attract visitors to Lalbagh flower show
Lalbagh Botanical Garden is all set to host the Independence Day flower show from August 7 to August 18. This time, the show will be set around the theme of Kittur kingdom, honouring its famous queen Kittur Rani Chennamma and Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna, who was the army chief of the kingdom. A huge floral fort of Kittur, made out of roses and chrysanthemums, will be the central attraction piece at the Glass House along with the model of a horse-mounted Chennamma and standing model of Rayanna. The Veera Rani Kittur Chennammaji Samadhi Sthala, the final resting place of Chennamma located in Kittur, will also be recreated florally for the show. A part of the fort will be rec-eated in a vertical garden form in front of which, models of Lavani dancers (the art form prominent in North Karnataka) will also be displayed. On the other side of the glass house, a horse mounted Rayanna and the scene of British hanging him to death will be depicted. Around the Glass House, 60 boards of 4 feet by 8 feet dimensions will be put up to narrate the story of Kittur kingdom, including its origin, famous rulers and its eventual decline. Eight outdoor screens 'We have chosen to honour Kittur Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna for this year's Independence Day flower show. Along with the floral representations, we will put up eight big outdoor screens at different places in Lalbagh on which historical records of Chennamma and Rayanna will be broadcast. This will include pictures, film clips and documentaries made about them,' explained M. Jagadeesh, Joint Director, Parks and Gardens, Horticulture Department. While the exact quantity of flowers needed for each floral model is still being calculated, the official said that a total of 100 types of flowers will be used for this year's show. It includes some regular flowers like roses and chrysanthemums which are used annually, along with special flowers like dahlias from Ooty, varieties of orchids, bromeliads, and canna lilies. The Independence Day flower show in 2024, around the theme life and contributions of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar saw less footfall when compared to the ones before that. The officials attributed it to weather factors and long-weekend travel. Around 9.07 lakh people visited the show, bringing the department a revenue of ₹3.44 crore. This year, around 10 lakh to 11 lakh people are expected to visit the show.

Flavour of crafts from Eastern India at this year's Independence Day ‘At Home'
For those invited by President Droupadi Murmu for her customary evening reception or 'At Home' this, the 79th Independence Day, the invitation sent out in her name will be showcasing the skill of craftspersons from Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, a nod to eastern India after this year's Republic Day bid a similar nod to southern India. The invitations will be made by contributions of artisans from these four states and curated by the National Institute of Design. Most of the artisans, many of them women worked alongside NID team, out of these nine artists from Madhubani in Bihar and 15 bamboo artisans from Jharkhand worked out of the Bengaluru campus of NID, with the rest . According Ashok Kumar Biswas, a Padma Shri awardee in 2024, and the man entrusted with producing the nearly 750 pieces of Tikuli art work from Bihar to be added to the invitation, the instructions from NID, that coordinated the effort with Rashtrapati Bhawan was clear. 'They wanted a lightweight example of Tikuli painting which is usually based on scenes of rural life in Bihar, or cultural and religious motifs, festivals etc. They asked for three types samples, of the traditional Tikuli base of MDA (dark brown in colour) with enamel paint, then on handmaid paper, and also little pieces of cardboard and plywood. I prepared a fourth sample, on paper, made to look like the dark brown Tikuli painting base, and sent it off. They approved the fourth sample and asked that 750 pieces be sent in 15 which we did at the Tikuli training centre that I run,' he said. 'It is a matter of great pride for me to be asked to do this by the President of India's office, for an occassion like indendence day, its a good initiative that places India's folk art at the centre of the Republic,' he said. The invitation will be encased in a Sikki Grass Box, made by artisans from Raiyam village in Madhubani district of Bihar, with 30 artists engaged in it. Woven delicately from Sikki grass, the box would contain a frame with the invitation itself, made of Bamboo with painting on the borders, with artists from Dumka in Jharkhand. This foldable frame can be reused as a photo frame after the event. Apart from the box and the frame, small artifacts, like a bookmark with Madhubani painting etched on it, plus a tussar stole with, again Madhubani painting with traditional block printing of symbols like Matsya (fish), Kamal (lotus) and Basant (spring) Tala Patachitra paintings by artisans from Raghurajpur in Puri, Bengali Patachitra postcard size painting by artists from Pingla village in Midnapore in West Bengal, Paitkar painting from East Singhbum in Jharkhand and Tikuli art postcard size painting from Patna in Bihar are also included in the invitation box.
