WATCH: ‘A scammer trying to scam me as me'
Actress and producer Connie Ferguson recently took to Instagram to warn her followers after a scammer attempted to impersonate her.
Scammers are increasingly using the names and images of public figures to deceive unsuspecting victims.
From fake investment schemes to bogus giveaways, con artists are exploiting social media and messaging apps to pose as well-known personalities.
'Time for a short story,' Connie wrote, sharing screenshots and a video.
She said she received a WhatsApp message from someone claiming to be 'Connie Ferguson'. When she checked the number on Truecaller, it appeared as 'Madonsela'.
The scammer then video-called her using an old clip from a live workout session she had posted during lockdown.
'After a few seconds, they dropped the call and texted, 'You saw me, right?'' she said.
Connie made it clear that she does not offer any investment opportunities and urged her followers to remain vigilant.
'Thieves are using AI to convince you that they are whoever they say they are. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Don't be manipulated into losing your common sense because times are hard.'

Rising cybercrimes
Cybercrime Unit Specialist Investigator Mike Bolhuis previously told The Citizen that in recent years, there has been a significant rise in these types of cybercrimes in South Africa.
'This surge can be attributed to several factors, including the increasing number of techniques and tools available, the growing popularity of social media platforms, and the public's heightened trust in celebrities.
'It goes without saying that people often fall for 'get-rich-quick' schemes, especially when a 'celebrity' is encouraging them to get involved,' he said.

'Crime she didn't commit': Jayden-Lee Meek's grandmother defends 'killer mom'
The maternal grandmother of Jayden-Lee Meek has defended her daughter Tiffany, whom she claims is not guilty of murder. Debbie Dunn has accused police and activists of trying to 'discredit' her daughter by keeping them away from the courtroom. Tiffany appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Monday, 14 July, on charges of murder, defeating the ends of justice, and crimen injuria. Exactly two months earlier, Jayden-Lee was found dead outside his apartment complex after reportedly going missing hours earlier. He suffered a blunt force head injury and was reportedly severely beaten. Speaking in a TikTok video accompanied by her son, Debbie Dunn claimed that her daughter, Tiffany, was not guilty of the murder of Jayden-Lee Meek. In the clip, the grandmother claims she was 'deeply disappointed' in the police investigation as well as the prosecution of her daughter 'over a crime she did not commit'. Dunn claimed that Tiffany's family, friends, and attorney were present at court, but they were unable to access the courtroom where she appeared. Speaking anonymously to eNCA, the investigator stated that the body was warm and fresh, indicating that he had been killed shortly before his discovery. The body was covered with bruises and abrasions. Forensic investigation in the apartment Jayden-Lee shared with his mother, Tiffany, revealed that blood stains had been scrubbed clean with detergent. Blood was discovered on Jayden-Lee's school clothes, underwear, and his schoolbooks. The investigator claims that there was an attempt to conceal evidence. A company operating under the name HDS Concepts has been claiming to represent Kelvin Momo. Kelvin Momo's team has warned of a scam by someone caliming to be his manager. 'It has come to our attention that a company operating under the name HDS Concepts has been falsely claiming to represent Kelvin Momo,' read the statement from Tsquared Productions, the legitimate management company. The statement by Momo's management stated that a person going by the name 'Devon' has claimed to be Momo's manager. 'We would like to firmly state that Kelvin Momo is not managed by HDS Concepts or any individual claiming to be Devon. These claims are false and misleading.' In May this year, Momo's team was forced to apologise to fans after he failed to show up at three confirmed performances.
