300 Companies Complete the Impact Declaration through the Sustainable Impact Digital Portal

Majra– National CSR Fund announced that nearly 300 companies have successfully completed the mandatory Impact Declaration through the Sustainable Impact Digital Portal. This milestone marks a significant step in embedding sustainability and governance principles across the private sector and represents the first phase in the process of applying for the Impact Seal, a federal recognition for companies demonstrating measurable contributions to the UAE's sustainable development. The Impact Declaration serves as a unified federal tool to assess a company's disclosure of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) efforts, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices, and actual contributions to the UAE community—be it financial, in-kind, or volunteer-based. Commenting on this development, Sarah Shaw, CEO of Majra, noted that the increasing engagement with the Impact Declaration and applications for the Impact Seal reflect a growing institutional commitment within the private sector toward transparency and measurable action. She stated, 'At Majra, we are building a nationwide institutional environment grounded in documentation, impact measurement, and results-driven partnerships. Through the Sustainable Impact Digital Portal, we empower companies to transform their commitments into measurable contributions that serve society and advance the UAE's vision for sustainable corporate responsibility.' In parallel with this growing participation, Majra received approximately 160 applications for the second cycle of the Impact Seal through the digital portal. The applications included around 100 from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)and 60 from large corporates—demonstrating increased interest from all economic sectors in formalizing their impact and enhancing institutional competitiveness. The Impact Seal is awarded across two official categories: one for large companies and a newly introduced category dedicated to SMEs, aligned with the UAE's National SME Agenda. The Seal is granted in three tiers—Platinum, Gold, and Silver—based on the scope and depth of corporate impact and sustainability practices. Launched in late 2024, the Sustainable Impact Digital Portal serves as an integrated national platform enabling companies to submit declarations and applications in a streamlined and unified manner. The portal also provides access to a suite of services offered by Majra, including the documentation and accreditation of CSR and sustainability projects, certified workshops, specialized studies, and capacity-building programs tailored to institutional needs. It ensures alignment with national priorities and global sustainability standards. Obtaining the Impact Seal offers companies a comprehensive range of strategic and regulatory benefits. It represents official federal-level recognition for excellence in ESG, CSR, and sustainability, elevating corporate credibility and public image at both local and international levels. The Seal reinforces stakeholder and investor trust through a certified endorsement from a UAE government entity and grants companies' priority access to government-led initiatives, policy development circles, and high-level partnership opportunities. It also supports institutional branding through authorized promotional use of the Seal emblem and strengthens internal performance by enabling companies to review and improve their sustainability indicators and systems. All achievements are recorded and made visible through the portal, contributing to a transparent national repository of impact and facilitating integration into the wider sustainability ecosystem in the UAE. This upward trend in corporate participation confirms the success of the federal impact measurement framework in fostering a culture of responsible business, enabling verified tracking of private sector contributions, and directing them toward national priorities in line with global ESG and sustainability benchmarks.

Opinion: Veeam exec believes some organisations guilty of pulling the wool over their own eyes when it comes to data resilience

Tim Pfaelzer, Senior Vice President & General EMEA Manager at Veeam, has penned an op-ed, in which he states his belief that many organisations are guilting of fooling themselves when it comes to the strength of their own data resilience. For too long, business leaders have viewed their organization's data resilience from afar, relying on theoretical plans and a checklist mindset. This 2D perspective – where technical measures are simply ticked off a to-do list – fails to capture the full, real-world cross-organizational complexity of cyber threats. Ransomware, in particular, cannot be fully simulated on paper. This mentality has led to a dangerous false sense of security. Veeam research shows that more than 30% of organizations believe they are more resilient than they actually are. While they may have the right pieces in place, unless these elements work together in a rigorously tested, real-world incident response plan, they risk being exposed when a true crisis hits. With 69% of organizations having faced a ransomware threat in the past year, the time for blind confidence is over. Leaders must remove the wool from their eyes and take meaningful, proactive action. False Confidence, Real Consequences Data resilience can be deceptively complex, and gaps often remain hidden until it's too late. Many organizations fall into the trap of believing they are prepared, only to find out otherwise under attack. Of the organizations that fell victim to ransomware last year, 69% thought they were prepared beforehand. After experiencing an attack, confidence in their preparedness dropped by more than 20%. Although the majority of organizations had a ransomware playbook, less than half included essential technical components such as backup copies and containment or isolation plans. On the surface, everything may have appeared in order – but a closer inspection revealed significant vulnerabilities. The consequences of misplaced confidence are severe. Only 10.5% of organizations were able to successfully recover following a ransomware attack last year, leading to major business and operational impacts. The recent M&S ransomware incident is a high-profile example, causing not only service outages for customers but also an estimated £300 million hit to trading profits. The Evolving Threat Landscape Some organizations may have hoped that the disruption of major ransomware groups like BlackCat and LockBit by law enforcement would make the threat landscape easier to navigate. In reality, the threat has not diminished – it has evolved. Smaller groups and 'lone wolves' have quickly filled the gap, bringing new methods and tactics that further challenge organizational resilience. From 2D to 3D: The Path to True Resilience Regardless of how confident an organization may be in its data resilience, a deeper, more critical examination of its ransomware playbooks is essential. It is no longer safe to assume that what works on paper will hold up under real-life duress. Leaders must move from a flat, 2D perspective to a dynamic, 3D approach. Start with the big picture: Do you know what data you need to protect and where it resides? Are the key resilience measures, such as a predefined chain of command and regular backup verifications, in place? Drill down further: Are your security teams up to date on the latest attack trends? With 89% of organizations reporting their backup repositories targeted by threat actors, ensuring redundancy for your backups is now critical. Plugging the gaps is only the beginning. Organizations must stress-test their incident response plans with real-world simulations. It's not enough to rely on plan A – test plans B, C, D, and beyond, including scenarios where critical staff are unavailable or multiple crises occur simultaneously. This process often exposes blind spots that would go unnoticed in a theoretical plan. Turning Confidence Into Capability Leveraging frameworks like the Veeam Data Resilience Maturity Model (DRMM), developed in partnership with McKinsey, can help organizations move beyond blind confidence. Our findings show that organizations with a high degree of data maturity recover from ransomware incidents seven times faster than their less mature counterparts, and experience three times less downtime. By taking control of data resilience – grounded in rigorous testing, continuous improvement, and collective intelligence – organizations can replace blind confidence with real capability. In the current threat landscape, it's not a question of 'if' your organization will be attacked, but 'when'. The best time to prepare is now – because in data resilience, only true readiness will make the difference.

Sheikh Hamdan praises 'remarkable success' of Dubai wedding programme as demand surges

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, on Monday hailed the "remarkable success" of a major Emirati family support strategy which has helped hundreds of couples to get married. Sheikh Hamdan said the Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum Family Programme had made a "tangible difference" in the lives of Emiratis as Dubai increases efforts to champion family stability and growth. The Dubai Wedding Programme - launched in January last year under the directives of Sheikha Hind, wife of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai - has witnessed a 218 per cent surge in demand for its services, year on year. The initiative offers citizens incentives to help reduce wedding costs – including marriage planning services and holding parties in modern halls across the emirate. Family counselling for newlyweds is also provided, along with marriage planning, family management and financial advice for young couples. Sheikh Hamdan said 27 per cent of all marriages in Dubai were registered with the support of the social welfare scheme. The Dubai Crown Prince said the project highlighted Sheikha Hind's commitment to "enhancing community wellbeing" and spoke of its importance to the emirate's wider development goals under the Dubai Social Agenda 33. "The Dubai Social Agenda 33 continues to build on this momentum, grounded in the belief that investing in families is the most powerful investment in the nation's future," Sheikh Hamdan said, in comments shared by Dubai Media Office. In its first year, the Dubai Weddings programme helped to enable 344 weddings, accounting for 28.3 per cent of all Emirati weddings in Dubai by the end of last year. It also contributed to a 10.1 per cent increase in Emirati weddings last year, compared to 2023. Under the Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum Family Programme, a remote work option on Fridays is in place for mothers during the first year after maternity leave and a reduction in monthly premium for housing loans to a minimum of Dh3,333 for beneficiaries of the Dubai Weddings programme, provided their monthly income does not exceed Dh30,000. Promoting the family unit In January last year, the Ruler of Dubai launched a Dh208 billion ($56.63 billion) strategy to double the number of Emirati families in the emirate in a decade. Sheikh Mohammed set out plans to increase housing standards, health care and quality of life for citizens. In June, Sheikh Mohammed issued a decree providing fully paid marriage leave of 10 days for Dubai government employees. It also allows employees to combine marriage leave with any other leave they are entitled to. The decree covers Emirati employees working in government agencies and authorities supervising special development zones and free zones. The UAE's Minister of Family recently told The National that the needs of families needed to be at the centre of government decision-making. She made her declaration as she outlined efforts to introduce a national fertility strategy aimed at addressing declining birth rates. Plans were discussed at the June meeting of the Federal National Council (FNC) during which it was confirmed feasibility studies were under way. The project is being launched against a global backdrop of reduced fertility rates, and the UAE is no different. The FNC session heard that there was an 11 per cent drop in births among Emiratis between 2015 and 2022, while non-Emirati residents had experienced a 5 per cent increase during the same period. There were 30,889 Emiratis born in 2022 and 65,762 expatriates. 'Fertility rates are declining globally, and the UAE is not immune,' said Sana bint Mohammed Suhail, Minister of Family, in a statement sent to The National. 'But where others may see a looming challenge, we see a chance to lead – by placing family back at the centre of policy, in ways that are meaningful, modern, and uniquely preservative of our Emirati identity.' This is now a 'strategic priority' according to Ms Suhail, who added the first phase of a national assessment has been launched. Several government agencies are now involved in the creation of the strategy.
