Pune law student arrest: BJP leaders criticise Kolkata Police, flag lack of action ‘against TMC leaders when they abuse Sanatan Dharma'

Indian Express01-06-2025

Bengal BJP leaders criticised the Kolkata Police for their 'proactiveness' in arresting law student Sharmishta Panoli over her purported communal post.
Panoli was arrested in Gurgaon by the Kolkata Police on Friday, brought to the Bengal capital on transit remand, and produced at the Alipore police court on Saturday. She has been remanded in jail custody till June 13.
Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said, 'TMC MP Mahua Moitra had said such disgraceful things against Goddess Kali, was any action taken against her even after 200 FIRs were filed? Their MP, Sayani Ghosh, had posted about Maha Dev. Was any action taken? So many FIRs against Firhad Hakim, was any action taken?'
Adhikari further said, 'Action is only taken against Sanatanis. I do not want to comment on what the girl (Panoli) has said, but the TMC is trying to appease a particular community for vote bank politics.'
Bengal BJP president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar posted on social media, 'Sharmistha Panoli, 22, law student, arrested for a now-deleted video and a public apology. No riots. No unrest. Yet Mamata Banerjee's police acted overnight — not for justice, but for appeasement. But when TMC leaders insult Sanatan Dharma… mock Maha Kumbh, and push communal poison — there's no FIR, no arrest, no apology. This is not justice. This is vote-bank vendetta.'
Sharmistha Panoli, a student of Symbiosis International University, Pune, has a sizeable social media following – almost 85,000 followers on X and 90,000 on Instagram.
Following the backlash over her purported controversial post, Panoli had posted on X, 'I do hereby tender my unconditional apology. Whatever was put are my personal feelings and I never intentionally wanted to hurt anybody, so if anybody is hurt, I'm sorry for the same. I expect co-operation and understanding. Henceforth, I will be cautious in my public post. Again, please accept my apologies.'
Maharashtra cabinet minister Nitesh Rane has demanded the release of Panoli. He posted, 'Ramgiri Maharaj speaks the truth.. it's a problem.. Sharmistha speaks the truth.. apologises… deletes the posts.. it's still a problem.. but when Sanatan Dharma is attacked every day by the WB TMC leaders.. there is no apology.. why? Then the secular kids come out to give lectures…'
Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram has also extended support to Panoli. He posted on X, 'These interstate arrests for social media posts (unless it's clearly demonstrated that it has led to a law & order situation) is blatantly a misuse of police powers.'
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, too, came out in Panoli's support and urged the police to 'act justly'. 'Blasphemy must be condemned, always! Secularism isn't a shield for some and a sword for others. It must be a two-way street. West Bengal Police, the nation is watching,' he said, adding that such swift action is not taken when TMC MPs 'mock Sanatana Dharma'.
Meanwhile, defending the actions of the Kolkata Police, TMC MP Sagarika Ghose told The Indian Express, 'Free speech doesn't allow hate speech. She (Panoli) has directly abused a religion. The Kolkata Police were acting on a warrant which they are duty-bound to execute. The notice was served, the family was absconding, the Kolkata Police just did their duty.'

TMC must be thrown out, only then peace can return to Bengal: Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan

New Delhi: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday condemned the gang-rape incident at South Calcutta Law College and launched a scathing attack at the Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led government of shielding the perpetrators, with alleged links to the ruling party. Speaking at a 'Mann Ki Baat' event in Panihati, North 24 Parganas, Pradhan declared, 'This is not a matter for a CBI inquiry. The culprits will be tried in the people's court of Bengal. They must be thrown out — only then will peace return to Bengal.' His statements assume significance as it comes ahead of the high-stakes 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. In the last few months, incidents like gang-rape incident at South Calcutta Law College, RG Kar Medical college rape case, series of sexual assault at Sandeshkhali has already put TMC at the backfoot and has given an opportunity to the BJP, which is eyeing to make inroads into West Bengal, once a bastion of CPM. The minister, accompanied by MoS Education and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and BJP's Kolkata North Suburban District President Chandi Charan Roy, launched a fierce attack on the TMC over recent incidents of lawlessness and alleged sexual violence in the state. 'What is going on in Bengal? The RG Kar incident has already shaken the conscience of the state. And now, another heinous crime has taken place at South Calcutta Law College in Kasba — both linked to TMC elements,' he said. Pradhan lamented the decline of Bengal's legacy in education and culture, invoking icons such as Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, and Rishi Aurobindo. 'This is the same Bengal that once led the world in knowledge, science, and spirituality. Today, it is in the news for gang-rape and anarchy under Trinamool's rule.' The minister also reacted sharply to controversial remarks made by TMC MLA Madan Mitra. 'It is their job to rub salt into the wounds. This arrogance comes from holding on to power for too long. Ravana and Duryodhana also fell because of such arrogance. History and time will answer them.' Calling TMC a mere extension of the 'old Congress culture,' Pradhan said, 'What else can one expect? They remain indifferent to the people's suffering while shamelessly protecting their own.' The BJP has demanded swift justice in the law college case and has intensified its campaign to corner TMC over worsening law and order in Bengal.

Serbia protests: Students lead massive rally against Vucic, thousands demand elections, dozens arrested Dozens of anti‑government demonstrators were arrested in Serbia's capital on Saturday night after hours‑long clashes with riot police that followed one of the largest protests against President Aleksandar Vucic in recent years. 'We want elections!'- slogans were raised by protestors who overflowed Slavija Square and nearby streets during the student‑led rally, capping nearly eight months of near‑daily dissent that has shaken Vucic's decade‑long hold on power. Protesters hurled eggs, bottles and other objects while police deployed shields and pepper spray. Officers were seen handcuffing detainees on the pavement; the interior ministry later said 'dozens of hooligans' were in custody. Six policemen and an unspecified number of citizens were injured. 'Serbia always wins in the end,' Vucic wrote on Instagram even as tensions flared. The former ultranationalist, accused by critics of eroding democratic freedoms while courting Russia and China, has repeatedly rejected calls for snap polls.
