Aaron Woods responds to Billy Slater, says Maroons coach ‘crossed a line' with comments
Aaron Woods has responded to Billy Slater's emotional press conference response to his 'grub' sledge, saying it was been 'blown out of proportion'.
Woods said on his Triple M Breakfast show the press conference crossed a line, as the fallout between the NSW great and Queensland coach threatened to overshadow State of Origin II.
Speaking on Wednesday morning with co-hosts Beau Ryan and Cat Lynch, Woods said he stood by the original comments he made last Tuesday but believes Slater's decision to invoke former Maroons coach Paul Green – who took his own life in 2022 – was 'completely unnecessary'.
'Obviously, I had those comments I made last Tuesday, and look, I stand by them,' Woods said.
'It's part of something I said in the lead-up to the game. When you say something about a person, that person is owed a right to reply. That person is Billy Slater. He's had seven days to reply.'
Slater had launched into a passionate defence during a press conference in Perth on Tuesday, calling Woods' insult 'degrading' and highlighting the responsibility that comes with working in the media.
'When you degrade someone personally in a derogatory manner, you probably don't deserve one of those privileged positions that you're all in, that we're all in,' Slater said.
'When you hold a position in the media or in our game, I feel that's a privilege and with that privilege comes a responsibility.
'I sit in that position most weeks and you amplify your voice to millions of people.
'You're not talking to your mates in the pub.'
He made an emotional point about how public criticism can weigh on individuals.
'You don't know what people are going through, although I might be able to handle it, the next person mightn't be,' he said.
'Maybe our last coach didn't,' referring to Green — who took his life by suicide in 2022.
While Woods acknowledged many of Slater's points — particularly about media responsibility — he felt one remark overstepped.
'One particular comment that he did make, I just thought Billy went a little bit over the boundary,' Woods said.
'I just think it was completely unnecessary for the situation.'
Co-host Beau Ryan also weighed in, saying Slater's comments 'took a dark turn' and the week-long build-up had spiralled beyond reasonable commentary.
'Grub might mean something different in Queensland,' Ryan said.
'But it's been the only thing people have been talking about before the game, and that's not right — the series is on the line.'
Woods said he believed Slater may have used the moment to rally his players ahead of a must-win match, with Queensland needing to avoid a fourth consecutive Origin defeat for the first time in nearly three decades.
'You look at the pressure he's under … honestly, it's Origin, we're always under pressure,' Woods said.
'I don't really care about Queensland. I've got a huge bet on the line with NSW. That's what I'm focused on.'
Woods said he had no intention of apologising, but also didn't want the saga to distract from the game itself — with Origin returning to Perth's Optus Stadium and expansion of the NRL on the agenda.
'I want the players to go out there and show off what a spectacle this game is,' Beau Ryan added.
'It's over now, from my point of view. No one's apologising. No one's meeting in the middle. You're a New South Welshman, he's a Queenslander. May the best team win.'
The controversy kicked off when Woods' criticised Slater on Triple M radio following the axing of captain Daly Cherry-Evans.
'To me that's p**s poor form from Billy Slater,' he said.
'After Game I in your press conference you said it wasn't about the personnel, you said you didn't play too well.
'You've come out and axed your captain Daly Cherry-Evans. You've said it wasn't a scapegoat, but mate it's a scapegoat.
'It's so funny because you watch these blokes up north and they say we don't get Origin and they use this pick and stick mentality.
'Well, Billy, you've just turned on your skipper.
'I want to see the real Billy Slater come out – the grub that we know of.
'This is a bloke who kicked John Skandalis in the head and got a six-week suspension.'

Bathurst, Moruya Tips and Inside Mail for Monday from Shayne O'Cass
Form analyst Shayne O'Cass has provided his best bets and race-by-race analysis for the quaddie legs at Monday's NSW country meetings at Bathurst and Moruya. â– â– â– â– â– BATHURST TIPS BEST BET Runner-up at his only two starts for the new stable and ready to win. Scratched from the Kensington meeting last Wednesday with this race in mind. Has some talent. VALUE Local whose sole win was here and first-up as is the case in this. â– â– â– â– â– QUADDIE Race 4: 5 Race 5: 3,4,6 Race 6: 2,3,4,6 Race 7: 2,7,5,6 â– â– â– â– â– JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Grant Buckley has ridden 144 winners at Bathurst and has a good book on Monday. â– â– â– â– â– BATHURST INSIDE MAIL RACE 4 – Benchmark 58 Handicap (1300m) Green Pineapple 's lone win in 10 starts was here at Bathurst and first-up over this very same trip back when Roy McCabe had him. The horse's last four runs are for Gayna Williams who has found a suitable race at home to resume in. Thoughtful, who races in the same colours as his close relative Happy Clapper, has the job ahead with a wide draw and a big weight but if he brings his A-game, he's a chance. Slush Fund is ready for the 1400m and barrier 1 (hopefully) can't hurt. Bet: Green Pineapple each-way. Skiing is a former Ciaron Maher-trained galloper who has raced seven times for Robert Quinn inclusive of two fourths and two fifths, three of them at provincial level. In terms of the trip, he was in a strong Midway class race at Newcastle last start and ran fifth; very fit and drawn 3. The best Final Comment is better than most of his rivals. Needs it fairly dry. Outcast Girl has claims. Island Legend used to wear the Classique Legend colours of Bon Ho back in the early days. Fast forward to more recent times and this son of Capitalist calls Wyong home with Nikki Hodgson calling the shots. Resumes here off a lovely trial win with Winona Costin the key booking. Starane is a terrific little bush horse. This will be his 40th start and he's won five and placed 13 times – and always in good country class races. Navios was huge in his local debut. Pressnell has drawn the outside alley twice in six starts and hasn't fared a whole lot better here with 14 although he'll come in a few closer to the inside rail after scratchings. There is no doubt the talent is there, and everything says 1400m will be his go. Saint Philomena beat a decent field at Mudgee on July 6 to shed her maiden status. No reason why she can't climb another rung in this. Ditto that for Bonnie And Bruce. Bet: Pressnell to win. â– â– â– â– â– MORUYA TIPS BEST BET Race 4 No. 9: Beauty Dash Really is racing herself ever closer to a first win. NEXT BEST Race 5 No. 10: Miss Steffi Graff filly (of course) on debut off some lovely trials. VALUE So You Think, granddaughter of Let's Elope and she is on the improve. **** LAY OF THE DAY **** SPICE BABY (Race 5 No. 11) Has trialled well but has competition from the likes of 6, 10 and 11 others hence lay in a full field only. â– â– â– â– â– RACE 5 – Maiden Handicap (1020m) Miss Steffi is a daughter of Graff and was bought for $20,000 at the Magic Millions. her three trials can summed up this way; 'good, very good and 'not as bad as it looks'. Love the draw for her here and has an experienced jockey on. The astute Trevor Lobb paid $15,000 at the HTBA Yearling Sale for Molteuno knowing it was way too cheap for granddaughter of Dizelle. There was a lot of hidden merit in her debut. Bet: Miss Steffi to win, Molteuno each-way, exacta 10 to beat 6. Rippana will turn six on August but only has five starts on her CV for one reason or another. What is important is that she has won twice, finished third once together with a fourth and a fifth. That win came first-up last prep and she thrashed them too. This will be Selhurst Park 's 14th run at the track and trip. He has one win and five placings. Watch him charging home late as always. Bet: Rippana to win, exacta 8 to beat 10, box trifecta 1,4,8,10, Daily Double 1st Leg 8, 2nd Leg 1. Gooloo Bucky put the writing on the wall first-up that a win was close at hand and sure enough he came back to Moruya two weeks later and won by nearly three lengths in that 1200m maiden. Bad alley this time but she has the confidence up. Teepee Princess is an American Pharoah out of a Savabeel, so with breeding like that, it only enhances her debut win over 1200m no less. Lady Revolution and Dame Annie have claims. Gorush Lightning finished an honourable third in quite a respectable Benchmark 66 here last start. That was his 80th career start and his 29th run at home here at Moruya. In that time, he has won six times and placed on 10 other occasions so he is very reliable really. His danger could come from within, that is his stablemate Peruno who has a lot of ticker and a better draw than his Michael Gatty-trained rival on Monday. is so, so consistent.

Brisbane trainers Tony Gollan and Jack Bruce devising plans for ex-Godolphin gallopers
Whether it's the Toowoomba Weetwood or the $1m Magic Millions Snippets, Brisbane trainers Tony Gollan and Jack Bruce have already started mapping out plans for their newly acquired gallopers from a recent sale of Godolphin horses. The racing and breeding powerhouse sold close to $2.2m worth of 25 ready-to-race horses last Wednesday as it prepares to enter a public training model from August 1. Deagon trainer Bruce, High Calibre Racing and Clarke Bloodstock forked out $135,000 to buy four-year-old gelding Razors, who finished runner-up to Kintyre in last year's $350,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) at Eagle Farm. Gollan Racing and Craig Sneesby paid $150,000 for gelding Fleetwood and the stable will also train Pereille, who was bought by Australian Bloodstock for $170,000. Four-year-old Fleetwood came third in the $175,000 Listed Creswick Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in July last year, while Pereille was runner-up to Marble Nine in this month's $175,000 Listed Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series Final (1200m) at the same track. 'Fleetwood is just a progressive horse who we think will do really well up here,' Gollan Racing's general manager Andrew Dunemann said. 'We also picked up Pereille, another horse who's very progressive. 'I do think Fleetwood in particular is a Magic Millions horse. He can go to the Snippets (on the Gold Coast in January) or one of the other top sprinting races.' The short-priced Pereille gets the win on the board at start #7! — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 5, 2023 Dunemann said the major benefit of buying from powerhouse Godolphin was the transparency of the sale. 'The way Godolphin does things is second to none, really,' he said. 'They don't breed horses to sell, they breed them to train, and that means the horses don't have the intervention early on that others do.' Bruce said the $160,000 Listed Toowoomba Weetwood (1200m) on September 27 at Clifford Park was a potential target for Razors. 'He could be a Weetwood horse if he can sharpen up at 1200m, although he'd probably want to win a couple of times between now and then,' Bruce said. 'He might be able to sneak into that race with 54kg which is obviously attractive being a Listed race with good prizemoney.' Bruce said Razors' NSW Benchmark rating of 83 would be lowered in Queensland, giving him more racing options for the stakes-placed horse. 'I had my eye on a few of them and I thought he was probably the best value,' Bruce said. 'He has great form and one of the attractions of him is that he's only a two-win horse so we've still got the class system to work our way through in Queensland. 'He's rated 81, the handicapper tells me in Queensland, which is still a good, fair Saturday class rating for a horse who's been stakes-placed and has some serious form on the board. 'In terms of my stable and where I'm tracking, I'm looking for horses like that so he's well worth the price.'
