Champions League giants could build stunning new 120,000-capacity stadium as talks begin over biggest ground in Europe

BENFICA could build a stunning new 120,000 capacity stadium that would make it the biggest ground in Europe.
Their Estádio da Luz home is one of the most eye-catching arenas in Europe and has hosted the Champions League final.

It once boasted 120,000 seats but limitations in its current design mean it cannot be expanded beyond a 70,000 capacity.
Architects Populous, who designed Wembley and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, have been consulted over an expansion.
Benfica currently fill out their 68,100 seats and they plan to add a fourth level to the stadium.
Populous have also been brought in to help with designs to build a 10,000-capacity multi-purpose indoor arena.
It will contain two indoor sports halls, with capacities of 2,500 and 1,500 respectively, a swimming pool as well as a 500-seat theatre and a rooftop football pitch.
A fan plaza with space for 10,000 supporters will be built along with food and drink outlets, as well as shops and restaurants.
But some within the club want a return to a 120,000-seat venue, including vice-president Rui Passo.
He said: 'We cannot go beyond 70,000 in this stadium, for reasons of safety, comfort and regulation. We have to start thinking about a new stadium.
'There are two sports in which we want to be stronger, women's football and rugby.
'This stadium can be the home of women's football and rugby. I want to dream of crowds of 40, 50 and 60 thousand people watching rugby and women's football matches. We must start dreaming about a new stadium.
'We have full boxes with waiting lists. We have executive seats with waiting lists. We have red pass seats with a huge waiting list. Roughly speaking, it is not difficult to increase the number of red pass seats from 45,000 to 70,000, executive seats from 5,000 to 10,000 and boxes from 150 to 300.
'We have a waiting list to buy these seats (almost 17,000 for the red pass). It is quite possible to start thinking seriously about a project like this.'
Former club president Luís Filipe Vieira, who stepped down in 2021 after being arrested on suspicion of a breach of trust against Benfica, also dreams of a 120,000 capacity venue.
According to Correio da Manha, Vieira plans to use this idea as a cornerstone of his bid to become club president again in the October elections, and he has already consulted an architect about the plans.

Hibs skipper Martin Boyle has laid out the 'ideal scenario' for bagging his 100th goal for the club on a massive European night at Easter Road. But he'd gladly pass up on the personal honour if someone else's moment of glory proved the difference in getting David Gray's men into the next round of the Europa League. The Hibees stunned mighty Midtjylland in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie, taking a shock early lead through summer signing Jamie McGrath and only conceding a late equaliser due to a combination of individual brilliance and an unlucky deflection. They welcome the Danes – Champions League group stage veterans and regulars in the latter phases of the Europa League – to Edinburgh on Thursday night with the tie delicately poised at 1-1. Despite thinking he'd cracked triple figures with a disallowed strike – after a lengthy VAR check to confirm an offside flag – at the MCH Arena in Herning last week. Naturally, the Socceroos striker would take any goal, anywhere, if it meant becoming a centurion. But he admits that this week's all-or-nothing showdown in front of a packed home crowd would be the perfect stage for another career-defining moment. 'It would be the ideal scenario,' said Boyle, the veteran – who had a one-year extension clause in his contract triggered just before the end of last season – adding: 'But as long as we get across the line then I'm equally as happy. 'I've had a few last season where the VAR checks took a while so ... But if it's not to be, fingers crossed I can get it next week. The passion that I have, I'll always have it. If I can cause defenders a bit of nightmares, then good. 'This is huge for the club, it's huge for us. We've worked all last season to get to this stage, and we really want to achieve something. 'We've put ourselves in a great position, a tough place to come. It's all on the line next week.' Manning the ramparts at home 'fortress' As Hibs dragged themselves off the foot of the Scottish Premiership to finish third in the table last season, they put together a formidable home record against even the strongest teams. That, insists Boyle, should give his team-mates confidence as they welcome Midtjylland to Edinburgh. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Yes, I feel like we turned Easter Road into a bit of a fortress last season,' he said, adding: 'After Christmas, we were really dominant there, getting after teams and hurting them. 'I'm sure we'll certainly take the game to them next week and try to be a little bit better than we were, a little bit more creative. Defensively, we were outstanding. We've got that week's break, which is good. So we'll go into next week with a lot of confidence. 'We can take a lot of positivity from that first leg. Defensively we were really good, got behind the ball, defended the ball really well. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'They put a lot of crosses in, a lot of long throws, but we defended it really well. Then we had chances on the break, maybe just didn't get the right pass or the right execution. 'But we can take a lot of positivity, we did create a lot of chances and scored a good goal. We'll take that to Easter Road next week, so happy days.'

PRINCE William last night told the Lionesses the nation was behind them in their quest for Euros 2025 glory today — and hailed their stunning fightbacks. He delivered a stirring message to Sarina Wiegman 's warriors as they aim to become the first England team to win a tournament on foreign soil. 5 5 Wills, who will be in the stands in Basel for the final against Spain, said: 'Good luck to the Lionesses tomorrow. He will be hoping England avenge their World Cup final defeat to Spain two years ago — though he will be joined by Spanish heir to the throne Princess Leonor and younger sister Infanta Sofía. Spain are the favourites today but fans believe England can pull off a stunning upset to land their second Euros in a row. They nearly lost in the quarters to Sweden and the semi against Italy before supersub Michelle Agyemang, 19, helped haul us through in both. Wills' show of support was echoed yesterday by the Band of the Grenadier Guards, who played footie anthem Three Lions outside Buckingham Palace. Basel's 38,000 St Jakob-Park is a sell-out for the 5pm kick-off, while an estimated 16million people will watch live on BBC or ITV. Celebrities also roared on the Lionesses last night, including BGT star Amanda Holden who said: 'You can do it girls! The whole country is behind you and we are so proud. Bring it home.' Loose Women's Katie Piper added: 'Good luck Lionesses! You've already inspired so many with your passion, teamwork and fight.' England skipper Leah Williamson revealed the players know about the weight of expectation from home. Supersub Chloe Kelly's late winner sends England into Euro 2025 final She said: 'We're very connected to what it means to the nation because it means the same to us. "The opportunity of tomorrow and what's on offer is the best thing in football — we have a chance to fight for the trophy. 'We recognise the opportunity and we'll do everything we can to take it.' Manager Sarina is the first female or male coach to reach five consecutive major tournament finals — two with the Netherlands and now three with England. 5 5 Sarina, who guided the Lionesses to their first-ever major tournament win when they beat Germany at Wembley in 2022, said: 'We are happy we're in the final and really want to win it. "And we're going to do everything to make that happen.' Supporters back home are estimated to spend a staggering £183million on drinks, food and party items while pubs can stay open to 1am. Fans have also been swarming into the Swiss city of Basel all weekend, including sports shop worker Kiri-Teegan Shirley-Smyth, 20, from London. She said: 'I'm going to party till Wednesday when we win.' Aimee Jones, 16, from Portsmouth, arriving with her friend and their dads, said: 'The players have been brilliant with their 'Proper England' attitude pulling them through. I'm sure they can do it again.'

Morgan Gibbs-White U-turn bombshell: Nottingham Forest star signs new deal in hammer blow to Tottenham's pursuit of England star

Morgan Gibbs-White has performed a dramatic U-turn on his Nottingham Forest future - with the England midfielder now signing a new deal at the City Ground. The playmaker was the subject of a £60million bid from Tottenham earlier this month, after the north London club thought they had activated the release clause in his contract. But the move was halted dramatically when Forest threatened to report Spurs to the Premier League for an alleged 'illegal' approach. Now, Gibbs-White has put an end to the speculation over his future and has penned a new deal with Forest until the summer of 2028. Mail Sport learned in January that Gibbs-White was resisting Forest's attempts to offer him a new deal that would at least have doubled his previous £60,000-a-week salary. He was keen on joining Tottenham, until he was offered a 'record deal' by Forest, described as a 'statement of intent' from owner Evangelos Marinakis. MORE TO FOLLOW...
