Tobacco consumption claims over 78,000 lives annually in Rajasthan

Jaipur, May 30 (UNI) Tobacco consumption claims the lives of approximately 8 million people worldwide each year, with India accounting for over 13.5 lakh deaths and Rajasthan witnessing over 78,000 fatalities annually. Moreover, more than 5,500 children in the country and over 350 in the state start consuming tobacco and other smoking products daily.
Pawan Singhal, Senior Professor at the ENT department of Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur, highlighted these alarming statistics ahead of World No Tobacco Day - May 31.
Citing the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), Dr. Singhal emphasized that the increasing trend of tobacco consumption among Rajasthan's youth is detrimental to their health, with nearly 78,000 people succumbing to tobacco-related deaths in the state.
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS 2019) reveals that 74.3% of adolescents in Rajasthan have been exposed to tobacco product promotions, while 15.6% are aware of e-cigarettes. Dr. Singhal stressed that the tobacco industry uses innovative marketing strategies to attract young people, which has a direct impact on the youth.
On World No Tobacco Day 2025, the theme "Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing the Industry's Tactics to Hook New Generations" will be discussed globally. The campaign aims to raise awareness among school and college students about the harmful effects of tobacco and the deceptive marketing strategies employed by the tobacco industry.
Shyam Maru, Trustee of Sukham Foundation, emphasised the need for collective efforts to reduce cancer cases and promote a healthy society.
According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS-II) 2017-18, 26.7 crore adults (28.6%) in India use tobacco, with 21.4% consuming smokeless tobacco and 10.7% smoking cigarettes and bidis. The survey also reveals that over 5,500 children start using tobacco daily in the country. UNI XC AKT SSP

National mission uncovers 18.85 lakh sickle cell cases

New Delhi, July 22 (UNI) The ongoing ambitious National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission has revealed a significant public health challenge, with more than 18.85 lakh individuals identified as either suffering from Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) or carrying the trait, according to the data shared by the Union Health Ministry today. As of now, six crore individuals have been screened against a target of seven crore. Sickle cell disease — also called sickle cell anemia — is a group of inherited disorders that affect hemoglobin, the major protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells. Of those screened, 2.15 lakh individuals have been diagnosed with the disease, and 16.7 lakh have been identified as carriers. Health experts have flagged the numbers as concerning, especially given the chronic nature of the illness and the burden it places on affected tribal populations. A total of 2.6 crore health cards have been distributed by states to facilitate continued monitoring and support, as per the statement by the Ministry. Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Telangana, Karnataka, and Uttarakhand have reported remarkable progress in meeting their screening targets. However, the highest number of diagnosed cases has emerged from Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat — indicating high disease prevalence in these regions. Screening is being carried out using validated Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) kits that allow for rapid and confirmatory diagnosis. A centralised digital dashboard and SCD portal have been established to consolidate data and improve coordination among states, says the statement. The Mission, inaugurated on July 1, 2023, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh, seeks to eliminate sickle cell anemia by 2047. It envisions universal screening of seven crore individuals aged 0–40 years in tribal and high-burden districts by FY 2025–26, supported by robust awareness campaigns and counselling services. Health authorities have underscored the need for intensified outreach, sustained counselling, and follow-up mechanisms for those diagnosed. The large number of affected individuals now identified underscores both the scale of the challenge and the urgency of addressing it through integrated national and state-level health systems. Raghav Chadha flags uptick in post-Covid health issues, seeks legal right to annual check-ups

New Delhi, July 22 (UNI) Rajya Sabha MP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha has flagged the growing incidence of heart-related ailments and other health complications in the country, particularly in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) today, Chadha highlighted what he termed a 'sharp rise' in heart failures and health disorders post-Covid, and called for annual health check-ups to be made a legal right for all Indian citizens. 'I raised a demand in Parliament: Make annual health check-up a legal right of every citizen... 'Post Covid-19, we're seeing a sharp rise in heart failures and other health issues. Early detection can save lives,' Chadha said. Drawing a parallel with public health systems in developed nations, the AAP leader pointed out that many such countries provide government-funded annual check-ups to their citizens. 'Why not in India?' he asked. Stating that healthcare should not remain the preserve of the privileged, Chadha stressed the need for accessible and routine medical testing. 'Healthcare must not remain a privilege for the elite,' he remarked. The AAP MP concluded his appeal with a pointed message: 'Jaanch hai toh jaan hai' (If there's a check-up, there's life).
