Tepid home improvement sales put Home Depot, Lowe's under microscope

Reuters19-05-2025
May 19 (Reuters) - As Home Depot (HD.N), opens new tab and Lowe's (LOW.N), opens new tab get set to report earnings this week, April sales data from independent firms
have investors gauging the likelihood of recession against the uncertainty of tariff whiplash.
With homeowners tending to lawns, gardens and DIY projects as the weather warms, investors are keeping an eye not just on the home retailers' sales, but indicators about the health of the consumer.
'People don't have the savings they did during the pandemic, and they're relying on high employment and wage growth to continue to be able to spend,' said Mark Mathews, executive director of research at the National Retail Federation.
Home improvement spending tends to be a bellwether for broader economic health, Mathews said, because it reflects consumers' ability to take on big projects, and can be a leading indicator of activity in the housing market.
April credit and debit card sales were not promising. Spending at building and garden supply stores fell 2% year-over-year in April, even as every other retail category saw growth, according to May data from NRF.
At Lowe's, April sales tumbled nearly 3% year-over-year after having risen 6.6% in March, debit and credit card purchase data from Affinity Solutions revealed. Home Depot saw just a 0.7% jump after a 4.2% rise in March, according to the data.
Consumers' intention to shop at these stores in the future also fell slightly in April, according to HundredX, a company that uses surveys to gauge public sentiment about retailers.
Compared to April of 2024, both stores saw about a 1% year-over-year decrease in future purchase intent. Among lower-income shoppers - those more vulnerable to economic instability - the drop was sharper, HundredX found.
Home Depot and Lowe's declined to comment.
It might indicate that a rebound in the stalled U.S. housing market is a ways off. 'People keep baking in the assumption of a recovery, and then it keeps getting pushed out,' said Courtney Yakavonis, a senior equity analyst at Columbia Threadneedle Investments, which holds stock in both retailers. 'I believe it's going to happen eventually, but the timeline is murky.'
Others in the sector have hinted at the specter of a slowdown. Tractor Supply Co. (TSCO.O), opens new tab cut its annual profit forecast in April, citing macroeconomic uncertainty.
But experts interviewed by Reuters weren't ready to forecast a recession. Wage and job growth is fairly steady, and there could be plenty of reasons for an April sales slump - including tariffs, said Morningstar analyst Jaime Katz.
President Donald Trump on April 2 announced sweeping tariffs on a host of trade partners, only to later pause them for 90 days. He imposed a virtual embargo on Chinese imports on April 9, but earlier this month paused those tariffs as well.
The uncertainty has discouraged consumers from buying big items, Katz said, which is why she'll be putting more weight on how Home Depot and Lowe's performed last quarter with professional contractors.
Yakavonis said she wants to hear more about how Home Depot and Lowe's will manage tariffs. Though neither company is overly exposed to China, tariff uncertainty makes it hard to assess their financial health.
'It's hard to just do the Excel math without knowing what steps they're taking to offset that,' she said.
Home Depot is due to report earnings on Tuesday, while Lowe's is slated to report on Wednesday.

Silver's hot streak gathers pace; market at highest since 2011

July 23 (Reuters) - Silver prices surged to their highest in almost 14 years on Wednesday, aided by worries about U.S. tariff policy, signs of tightness in the spot market and growing investor interest in alternatives to gold. Spot silver was up 0.3% at $39.40 per troy ounce as of 1354 GMT, its highest level since September 2011. Silver, both a precious and industrial metal, is up 36% this year, outperforming gold's 31% growth and coming within a whisker of the key $40-per-ounce mark. The metal hit a record high of $49 in 2011. U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to impose 50% import tariffs on copper from August 1 and the U.S. import tariffs for Mexico widened the premium of the U.S. futures for silver and other metals against the London benchmarks in July, leading to a growth in lease rates in the spot market. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium were excluded from Trump's April reciprocal tariffs, but "the broader market isn't trading it that way and is taking a page out of Comex copper's handbook", Nicky Shiels, head of metals strategy at MKS PAMP. Spot silver prices may hit $42 per ounce this year, according to Shiels. Analysts also noted that industrial demand for silver, heading for the fifth year of structural market deficit, remains solid, while investment demand is gaining momentum as a more affordable alternative to gold. Silver's recent rally has improved its ratio with gold to the strongest level in seven months. It currently takes 87 ounces of silver to buy an ounce of gold , compared with 105 ounces in April. "It is the copper tariff that sent some spinning off at odd tangents that captured the other metals," said a precious metal trader based in London, adding that the lease rates in the spot market should fall once the borrowing activity caused by the U.S. tariff fears subside. The current momentum could be hot enough to take silver over $40/oz in the short term, said Nitesh Shah, commodity strategist at WisdomTree. "But with positioning stretched, we would not be surprised if it fell back to $35/oz, before it starts its march higher to $45/oz next year," Shah added.

Space startup iRocket to go public via $400 million SPAC deal

July 23 (Reuters) - Reusable rocket developer Innovative Rocket Technologies, commonly known as iRocket, will go public in the U.S. through a $400 million merger with special purpose acquisition company BPGC Acquisition, the companies said on Wednesday. SPAC deals, which took a backseat following a boom in 2020-2021, have seen a resurgence this year as macroeconomic uncertainties led by President Donald Trump's tariff policies continue to temper dealmaking. Crypto firm Bitcoin Standard Treasury Company, with over 30,000 bitcoin on its balance sheet, said it was aiming to list on Nasdaq through a merger with a Cantor Fitzgerald-backed blank check firm. SPACs are being increasingly viewed as a viable alternative to the traditional initial public offerings, which remained subdued through the tariff saga. However, progress in trade talks has rejuvenated investor interest in fresh listings. The company, founded in 2018, specializes in liquid oxygen and methane-fueled rocket propulsion technology, which encompasses a quick turnaround time to reload and relaunch, through its patented engine design. Space startups have also seen a lot of interest from investors and venture capital firms, with the World Economic Forum predicting a $1.8 trillion space economy by 2035. The company also noted the same number, citing a report by McKinsey, indicating it as a major opportunity for the rocket developer. "iRocket's unique combination of proven engineering talent, reusable launch systems, and solid rocket motor capability positions the Company to capture a significant share of the global launch and propulsion market," said Wilbur Ross, the 39th U.S. Secretary of Commerce and a sponsor of BPGC. The transaction, on which Cohen & Company Capital Markets advised iRocket financially, is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2025. The companies intend to list the merged entity on Nasdaq.

U.S. coal power plants well stocked through 2026, EIA says

July 23 (Reuters) - U.S. coal-fired power plants are expected to remain well stocked through the end of 2026, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Wednesday in its latest short-term energy outlook. Power plants in the U.S. held about 124 million short tons of coal on-site at the end of June, the EIA estimated, enough to last roughly 93 days at a consumption rate of 1.3 million short tons per day. The agency forecasts that days of burn - the estimated number of days a power plant can operate using its current stockpile - will range between 90 and 120 through the end of next year. That's about a month's worth of coal more than power plants had on site between 2019 and 2022. "In our short-term forecast, we expect coal's share of U.S. electricity generation to increase from 16% in 2024 to 17% in 2025 and then decrease to 15% in 2026," the agency said.
