Ops Metal key to restoring supply chain integrity and investment confidence

The Sun6 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Steel Association (MSA) has emphasised the importance of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) 'Ops Metal' in safeguarding supply chain integrity and reinforcing investor trust. The operation targets illegal scrap metal exports, which have cost Malaysia RM950 million in lost tax revenue over six years.
The MSA stressed that unchecked scrap outflows threaten industrial resilience, climate targets, and job creation. It urged stronger frameworks for transparent domestic scrap circulation to support low-emission steel production and circular economy goals.
'Multi-agency collaboration is vital to curb smuggling and align with Malaysia's infrastructure and climate commitments,' the MSA stated. The recent raids, including at NationGate Solution (M) Sdn Bhd, uncovered systemic tax evasion averaging RM160 million annually.
The steel sector, contributing 2.5% to GDP and supporting 112,000 jobs, faces supply shortages and inflated costs due to illegal exports. The MSA warned these activities jeopardise Malaysia's Net Zero 2050 target and NIMP 2030's green economy vision.
MITI's actions against tariff circumvention were commended, with the MSA reiterating the need for market discipline to sustain economic stability and supply chain security. - Bernama

File police, MACC reports over alleged threats, Kula tells Sabah graft whistleblower

KUALA LUMPUR: File a report with the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), government tells Sabah graft whistleblower. Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran said that the Madani government will not compromise with any intimidation. 'This matter has been raised by several MPs. This is a very serious allegation and completely unacceptable,' he said when winding up the debates on the Whistleblower Act (Amendment) in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (July 22). He added that any whistleblower who comes forward with information about any misconduct must not be silenced or threatened by any party. "Especially not by the authorities themselves. I would like to advise the individual named Albert Tei to immediately file a report with the police and the MACC complaints committee under Section 15 of the MACC Act 2009, naming the MACC officer involved in the allegation. 'I guarantee that the Madani government will not compromise with any intimidation if the allegation is true,' he said. Previously, Tei — who exposed a graft allegation in Sabah — allegedly was told by an MACC officer not to appear in public to avoid any problems.

Nga demands apology over MyKiosk ‘white elephant' claims

KUALA LUMPUR: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has demanded an apology from critics who labelled the MyKiosk initiative a 'white elephant' project. His statement follows the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) confirmation that no corruption or abuse of power occurred in the programme's implementation. Nga stressed that the ministry proactively invited MACC to investigate, submitting all relevant documents. 'MACC has since issued a statement confirming that there was no abuse of power, no criminal element, and no corruption involved,' he said during a Dewan Rakyat session. He called on critics to retract their accusations and acknowledge the hard work of civil servants. The MyKiosk initiative has recorded strong occupancy rates, with MyKiosk 1.0 at 91.75% and MyKiosk 2.0 at 86.78%. The programme has benefited 7,243 traders nationwide, with some reporting significant income growth. A hawker at Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) Square now earns up to RM30,000 monthly, while food and soymilk vendors doubled their income to RM18,000. To improve accountability, the ministry introduced a 'traffic light' system to evaluate local authorities (PBTs). Green-rated PBTs receive increased allocations, while yellow-rated ones face reviews. Red-rated PBTs risk cancelled funding and reprimands. Separately, the RM3.5 million Batu Pahat Municipal Council Stadium upgrade is set to begin early next year, focusing on drainage, field resurfacing, and a new running track. - Bernama

Court sets Oct 1 hearing for MACC's RM169m forfeiture bid against Ismail Sabri

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court has scheduled October 1 to hear the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) bid to forfeit over RM169 million allegedly linked to former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. Judge Suzana Hussin set the date after lawyer Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, representing Ismail Sabri and his former political secretary Datuk Mohammad Anuar Mohd Yunus, requested additional time to review the case. The defence must submit its affidavit by August 13, while MACC is required to file a counter-affidavit by September 3. Deputy Public Prosecutors Ifa Sirrhu Samsudin and Alis Izzati Azurin Rusdi, along with lawyer Ragunath Kesavan, were present during the proceedings. MACC is seeking to forfeit the funds, held by Mohammad Anuar, to the Malaysian government. The amount includes RM14.7 million, SGD6.1 million, USD1.4 million, CHF3 million, EUR12.1 million, JPY363 million, GBP50,250, NZD44,600, AED34.7 million, and AUD352,850. The application was filed under Section 41(1) of the MACC Act 2009, with the commission asserting that the money is connected to an offence under Section 36(2) of the same Act. On July 3, MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki announced plans to forfeit seized assets worth RM170 million. Ismail Sabri had previously been called in multiple times to provide statements regarding his asset declarations. The seized funds, along with 16kg of gold bars valued at RM7 million, were obtained during raids on properties suspected of being used as 'safe houses' in a corruption and money laundering probe involving the Bera MP. - Bernama
