99 Speedmart Poised To Weather Macroeconomic Challenges

BusinessToday16-05-2025
RHB Investment Bank Bhd (RHB Research), CIMB Investment Bank Bhd (CIMB Securities) and Hong Leong Investment Bank bHD (HLIB) have all reiterated their BUY calls on 99 Speed Mart Retail Holdings Bhd following a strong set of first-quarter results for the financial year ending March 2025 (1Q25), with target prices of RM2.45, RM2.60 and RM2.98 respectively.
Analysts said 99SMART delivered solid earnings driven by festive demand, continued outlet expansion and better operating efficiencies, with all three houses noting that the RM143 million core net profit – up 7–8% year-on-year (YoY) – came in within expectations, representing around a quarter of full-year forecasts.
RHB Research remarked that the strong topline growth of 8% YoY to RM2.6 billion was supported by the addition of 246 new outlets over the past year, bringing the total to 2,833 stores. Improved gross profit margin of 12%, aided by supplier-driven promotional incentives, helped counteract higher operating expenses stemming from the implementation of the new minimum wage.
The research house reported its DCF-derived target price was raised from RM2.39 to RM2.45, implying 35x FY25F P/E, supported by the group's domestic-centric profile and resilience amid external policy uncertainties such as the US tariff outlook.
CIMB Securities also kept its projections intact, noting that while EBITDA margin dipped 0.2 percentage points YoY to 10% due to wage-related cost pressure, this was offset by top-line growth and a better sales mix. Analysts anticipate FY25 core earnings to grow 11.9% YoY, underpinned by 8.8% revenue growth from a projected 250 new store openings and same-store sales growth of 1.4%.
CIMB Securities maintained its target price at RM2.60 based on a 33x CY26F P/E, arguing the premium valuation is justified by superior return on equity (ROE) and its essential goods-focused product offering.
HLIB echoed the positive sentiment, highlighting that 99SMART's 1Q25 core profit of RM142.7 million showed a 12% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) growth and 7% YoY improvement, also backed by festive-related sales and supplier incentives.
With expansion plans to add 250 more outlets in 2025 and a new distribution hub in Cyberjaya to bolster logistics, HLIB expects the group's growth momentum to remain intact. Its RM2.98 target price is pegged to a 45x FY25 P/E multiple, reflecting confidence in the group's scale advantage and recurring revenue model.
The company declared an interim dividend of 2.25 sen per share for the quarter. Analysts noted that this was consistent with expectations, with CIMB highlighting that part of the payout may reflect deferred FY24 dividends following 99SMART's listing in September 2024.
Looking ahead, all three research houses said that 99SMART is poised to benefit from rising disposable income amid higher minimum wages and stronger government support for lower-income households.
The analysts believe the group's wide-reaching store network and positioning as a value-for-money essential goods retailer place it in a favourable spot to weather macroeconomic challenges and shifting consumer preferences. Related

Strong 2Q showing forecast for planters

PETALING JAYA: Plantation companies will likely report another decent set of performance on a quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) basis in the upcoming second quarter of financial year 2025 (2Q25) results season, despite anticipation of mixed sequential improvement. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research in its 2Q25 results preview expects planters' performance to be supported by a recovery in the fresh fruit bunch (FFB) output amid relatively stable palm oil prices. On a q-o-q basis, the brokerage firm expects plantation companies under its coverage to record FFB output growth ranging from 3.5% to 46%, driven primarily by seasonal factors and more conducive weather conditions. 'Despite the broad-based increase in FFB production, upstream earnings performance was likely mixed, as the output growth registered by some of the planters (such as TSH Resources Bhd and Hap Seng Plantations Holdings Bhd ) were not sufficient to mitigate the q-o-q decline in crude palm oil (CPO) prices and the full cost effect of the minimum wage hike implemented since February 2025,' it pointed out. On the other hand, downstream segment earnings are expected to improve sequentially. 'This will be supported by a narrower export tax and levy differential between Malaysia and Indonesia, and lower feedstock costs, particularly for both CPO and crude palm kernel oil,' added HLIB Research. On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, the brokerage firm expects planters to report flattish upstream earnings in 2Q25, as broadly higher FFB output – amid flattish CPO prices – is likely offset by higher labour costs following the minimum wage hike implementation. 'During the quarter, seven out of eight planters under our coverage recorded y-o-y increases in FFB output, primarily driven by yield normalisation,' the brokerage firm said. Note that some planters were impacted by biological tree stress and a shift in cropping patterns last year. As for downstream segment earnings, it could potentially weaken in 2Q25 due to the high earnings base effect CPO export tax and duty differential between Malaysia and Indonesia, along with high palm kernel prices, which will likely curtail margin for oleochemical products. HLIB Research has maintained its 2025-2026 CPO price assumptions of RM4,200 per tonne and RM4,000 per tonne, respectively. It said ample near-term supply of vegetable oils (in particular, CPO and soybean) will cap the near-term CPO price (possibly until 3Q25), before turning more upbeat in 4Q25. Year-to-date, the CPO price has averaged at RM4,342 per tonne. The brokerage firm has kept a 'neutral' stance on the plantation sector due to the lack of significant near-term CPO price re-rating catalysts. For exposure, its top 'buy' picks are IOI Corp Bhd with a target price of RM4.12 and SD Guthrie Bhd with a target price of RM5.15. Meanwhile, HLIB Research has ceased coverage on FGV Holdings Bhd , as the Federal Land Development Authority's stake in FGV had exceeded the minimum 90% threshold and its listing status will be withdrawn from the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia. 'As such, our earnings forecasts, target price of RM1.30 and 'hold' rating should no longer be used as a reference going forward,' it noted.

Westports earnings outlook bright on container growth, tariff gains

KUALA LUMPUR: Westsport Holdings Bhd is expected to continue earnings expansion on the back of sustained volume growth and container tariff hike in the second half of financial year 2025 (2H25), said Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd (HLIB). Despite on-going uncertainties on global trade and economies, HLIB said Westports maintains its guidance of mid-single digit growth for container throughput in 2025, after achieving 3.1 per cent growth in 1H25. The bank noted that Westport has not seen any meaningful change in on-going volume and future volume as major liners have not changed their port calling. "The approved tariff hike effective July 15, 2025, Jan 1, 2026 and July 1, 2027, will improve the group's cash flow and partly fund WP2 expansion plan. "Furthermore, the approved five years dividend reinvestment plan (DRP) will be used to partly finance WP2 (Westports 2) as well. "Management is committed to continue its 75 per cent dividend payout policy," it said. Meanwhile, HLIB said Westports reported another strong performance for the second quarter of financial year 2025 with net profit of RM232.2 million, lifting 1H25 to RM454.7 million. This was within HLIB's and the consensus full-year forecasts of 49.5 per cent and 48.4 per cent, respectively. "The growth was mainly driven by higher container value-added services revenue and rental rate. "At current juncture, management is retaining its guidance of mid-single digit growth for container throughput in 2025, post achieving 3.1 per cent in 1HFY25. "Maintain Buy rating with an unchanged target price of RM6.08," it added.

F&N downgraded to hold as Q3 profit misses expectations

KUALA LUMPUR: Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd's (F&N) third quarter (Q3) 2025 net profit fell below the analyst's expectation, said CIMB Securities Research. F&N's Q3 net profit was RM98.3 million, after adjusting for RM13.5 million in one-off items (mainly comprising forex losses of RM9.8 million and receivables impairment of RM2.8 million). CIMB Securities said the results fell short of expectations, as the nine months (9M) of financial year 2025 (FY25) net profit of RM399 million accounted for only 73.6 per cent/68.9 per cent of the firm's/consensus FY25 forecasts, respectively. "The negative variance was largely due to wider-than-expected losses from its integrated dairy farm, weaker-than-anticipated sales in Malaysia and Thailand and a higher effective tax rate of 34.4 per cent, likely due to dairy unit underperformance," it said. CIMB Securities expects F&N to post a flattish quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) result in Q4 FY25. While Malaysian sales should recover from the low base in Q3, the firm said this is likely to be offset by softer performance in Indochina due to Thailand-Cambodia border disruptions affecting exports to Cambodia and reduced tourist arrivals in Thailand. "However, the recent strengthening of the ringgit should lead to lower input costs, and internal cost optimisation initiatives should help cushion ongoing dairy farm losses. "In addition, we expect the effective tax rate to normalise in Q4 FY25, supported by the recognition of deferred tax assets to offset losses from the company's dairy farm operations," it said. In view of the recent share price appreciation (14.9 per cent in the past six months), CIMB Securities has downgraded F&N to Hold from Buy. The firm believes that current valuations have largely priced in the defensive nature of its business, while earnings prospects remain muted in its view (three-year core net profit of 2.4 per cent). "Our target price is lowered to RM28.80 after revising down our earnings per share estimates," it added.
