WhatsApp location helps fire brigade rescue teen hikers lost on Penang's Bukit Cherok Tok Kun
BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 22 — Two youngsters who got lost in the forest while hiking at Bukit Cherok Tok Kun, famed for its biggest buttress trees in Penang, yesterday were swiftly rescued by the fire brigade, thanks to a handy smartphone.
Assistant operations director of the Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), John Sagun Francis, said the victims sent their location via WhatsApp at 1.16pm to his department.
'A team from the Bukit Mertajam Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was deployed to the location, where five personnel were involved in the search and rescue operation for the teenagers, with the assistance of the public.
'The two 18-year-olds were found and brought down safely, with the operation ending at 4.14pm,' he said in a statement, adding that the victims had been handed over to their guardians. — Bernama

One of them, Abdul Wafiy Kamarudin, 23, said the lawsuit will serve as a lesson to all drivers to be careful on the road. 'We are demanding damages for our injuries and loss of personal items in the accident,' Harian Metro reported him as saying. Abdul Wafiy said they are still drawing up a list of victims interested in joining them in the lawsuit. 'The majority of my friends are ready for legal action. We have lawyers ready to fight this case in court,' he said. Fifteen people were killed in the accident between the bus carrying the UPSI students and a car. The collision on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway, near Tasik Banding, involved a total of 48 victims, 13 of whom died at the scene and two others at the hospital. On June 20, road transport department (JPJ) director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said JPJ is finalising investigation papers for possible legal action against the bus operator and company. He said the papers will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for a decision on potential charges.

Melaka boy, 11, suffers head injury after father allegedly throws chair over lukewarm ‘kopi O'
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Authorities have confirmed that an 11-year-old boy sustained a head injury after he was allegedly struck by a chair thrown by his father after the child served coffee that was deemed not hot enough. According to MalaysiaGazette, Melaka state executive councillor for women, family and community development, Datuk Kalsom Noordin, said the incident occurred when the boy was home alone with his father. His mother was at work at the time. 'The father asked the child to prepare a cup of hot kopi O. When the drink was not hot enough, he became angry after the boy insisted he had already heated it. 'Frustrated and disbelieving, the father threw a chair, which hit the boy's head,' she reportedly said. Kalsom added the man later cleaned the wound, and the boy only told his mother what had happened when she returned home. The child was first taken to a clinic in Cheng but was referred to Melaka Hospital due to the clinic's lack of X-ray and CT scan facilities. 'Scans at the hospital showed no serious injuries,' she added. She also said officers from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) would visit the family's home on Monday to record statements and assess the next course of action.

New Zealand woman injured after 6m fall at Kanching Waterfall
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — A 52-year-old New Zealand woman was injured after falling from a height of about six metres at Kanching Waterfall in Rawang today. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said an emergency call was received at 11.52am. 'A team from the Rawang Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene,' he said in a statement. 'The victim, a New Zealand national, had fallen from the waterfall from a height of approximately six metres.' He said initial checks found that the woman sustained injuries to her left leg, left arm and spine. The victim was conscious and taken to hospital for further treatment.
