Hundreds gathered at a New York mosque on Thursday to commemorate a Bangladesh-born police officer who lost his life protecting his adopted city when a shooter attacked an office building this week.
Officer Didarul Islam "did believe in the American dream, not as something handed down but as something built with your own hands," Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch addressed Islam's community as officers stood in formation outside the Bronx religious centre.
Officials and New York's Bangladeshi community members gathered to honour the deceased officer during a service that highlighted his dedication to family, heritage and public service.
The 36-year-old officer, a married father of two expecting a third child, was conducting an NYPD-approved private security assignment in uniform when he and three others were fatally shot Monday at the Manhattan high-rise housing the NFL's headquarters and various corporate offices.
"To our family, he was our world. To the city, he was a proud NYPD officer who served with compassion and integrity. He lived to help others," Islam's widow said in a message delivered by a family member at the Parkchester Jame Masjid mosque, according to the Associated Press.
Officers positioned on nearby rooftops provided security whilst fire engines displayed a large American flag across the street. A vehicle carried a digital display showing Islam's photographs and a tribute from his union.
After immigrating to the United States, Islam established his career in America's largest police department. He viewed policing as "a blanket of the community, there to provide comfort and care," according to the police commissioner.
Initially serving as a school safety agent, Islam became a patrol officer less than four years ago and received a posthumous promotion to detective on Thursday.
"He could have gone into any other occupation he wanted, but he wanted to put on that uniform, and he wanted to protect fellow New Yorkers. And he wanted to let us know that he believed in what this city and what this country stood for," Mayor Eric Adams told attendees.
In Washington, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt commenced her briefing by conveying President Donald Trump's sympathies to Islam's family, noting he "made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of his fellow New Yorkers."
Imam Zakir Ahmed emphasised the officer's immigrant background and Muslim faith, whilst noting Islam "lived at a time when people like him are too often feared, vilified and made to feel like outsiders."
Following the service, attendees filled the streets for prayer, including Muslim officers, as their colleagues maintained formation behind them.
The officer's casket, adorned with US and NYPD flags, was transported to Totowa, New Jersey, for burial.
Julia Hyman, 27, another victim who worked at a real estate firm, was remembered at a Manhattan synagogue service on Wednesday.
Funeral arrangements remain unannounced for security guard Aland Etienne and executive Wesley LePatner.
Police identified Shane Tamura, 27, as the assailant, a former football player who recently worked in Las Vegas casino surveillance. Authorities discovered over 800 ammunition rounds in his vehicle and 47 shell casings at the scene.
Officials reported Tamura had mental health issues and found prescribed psychiatric medication at his Las Vegas residence. He mistakenly accessed the wrong floor whilst attempting to reach the NFL office. The shooting seriously wounded an NFL employee in the lobby.
Governor Kathy Hochul stated at Thursday's service that Islam "saved lives. He was out front," adding that "others may be alive today because he was the barrier."

No resumption of MGNREGA work in West Bengal despite HC order says PBKMS

Despite an order by the Calcutta High Court, to resume MGNREGA in West Bengal from August 1, there has been no resumption of 100 days work, Paschim Banga Khet Majoor Samity, a union of agricultural workers, said on Friday (August 1, 2025). Hearing a petition of PBKMS a division bench of the Calcutta High Court headed by T.S. Sivagnanam on June 18 directed the resumption of the scheme from August 1 'Yet, even after this landmark victory for rural workers, both the Central and State governments have chosen to brazenly defy the Court's order. Instead of preparing for the resumption of work, block offices in multiple districts are refusing to even accept job applications. This is a deliberate attack on the right to work of the state's poorest,' a press statement by PBKMS said. The union also added that job applications by people made under MGNREGA have been rejected. 'In just four days, between 28th and 31st July 2025, 2,092 job applications were submitted across block offices in Purulia, South 24 Parganas, and North 24 Parganas districts. Meanwhile, job applications from 1,349 workers were illegally rejected in 9 block offices across 7 districts,' the union said. A representative of PBKMS said that when they contacted the NREGA Commissioner, he clearly stated that no work will begin unless the Central Government issues fresh instructions - a position that clearly undermines the authority of the Calcutta High Court. Alleging willful inaction by both the governments, the union stated that the Central Government is equally guilty and by hiding behind Section 27 of the MGNREGA Act, 'it continues to block the release of funds and work, systematically depriving Bengal's workers of their legal right to employment'. The workers union also claimed that in Nadia district's Krishnagar-II block, when a member of the union accompanied workers to submit job applications, the BDO and several panchayat pradhans responded with abuse and threats, calling him a 'Bangladeshi' and threatening him with arrest and punitive action. Demanding the immediate implementation of MGNREGA work in West Bengal, as per the High Court order, the PBKMS stated that this blatant 'non-compliance with a High Court order is illegal, unjust, and unacceptable and it continue our struggle for the right to work in every village and every district'. Before the Lok Sabha polls in 2024, the Trinamool Congress along with MGNREGA workers held protests in Delhi demanding payment of wages and resumption of work. However, West Bengal's ruling party response to the High Court order has been lukewarm. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said her government has started Karmashree Prakalpa to provide at least 50 days of wage employment to each Job Card holder household in a financial year. The scheme, however, is not visible at the grass roots level .Work under MGNREGA had stopped in the State since December 2021 which has resulted in widespread rural distress and migration.

4 years on, man left with disability after accident awarded Rs 30 lakh compensation

Gurgaon: The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) on Thursday awarded Rs 30.7 lakh compensation to a 34-year-old accountant, who was left with disabilities after a road accident involving a truck four years ago. "Accident is a great trauma in itself… Melancholy and suffering become companions of the victim," MACT-Gurgaon's presiding officer Sunil Kumar Dewan observed in the July 31 ruling. Naveen Soni, a resident of Kankrola in Gurgaon, was riding his motorcycle home from work on July 8, 2021, when a Punjab-registered truck struck his vehicle near Jhajjar Bypass Road around 9:40pm. The truck driver fled the site immediately after the collision. Soni, grievously injured and bedridden for several months after, was initially treated at a Farrukhnagar hospital and was later transferred to the privately run Paras Hospital in the city. He suffered from permanent walking abnormalities and lost his job. "Along with financial loss, he also suffered physical and mental trauma," Dharma Sharma, Soni's counsel, argued before the tribunal. The defence – comprising truck driver Vijay Kumar, Suraj Transport Service and ICICI Lombard Insurance Company – contested the compensation claim on multiple grounds. Rajesh Bhardwaj, representing the truck driver and the transport company, argued that his clients were being falsely implicated and questioned the high compensation amount. Deepak Gupta, counsel for the insurance company, argued that details of the truck and its registration number were not mentioned in the original FIR. He also raised objections on Soni's age and salary drawn by him before the accident. But Soni's counsel presented an eyewitness – Bijender, who runs a scrap shop near the accident site. Bijender said in his testimony that he saw the accident and had noted down the truck's registration number. A day later, the shop owner told the tribunal, he provided details about the truck and the accident to cops who were investigating the case. Noting these details, the tribunal's presiding officer on Thursday ruled in favour of Soni and directed the truck driver, the transport company and the insurance firm to jointly pay Rs 30.7 lakh as compensation along with 7.5% annual interest.
