Hyundai develops new petrol-electric hybrid systems
The transmission-integrated system the firm says will improve the driving and ownership experience for its customers.
The new transmission features two integrated motors that can be paired flexibly with a range of internal combustion engines. Hyundai says this offers optimised performance and fuel efficiency.
The powertrain will go into a range for vehicles, and is due soon in Palisade with a redeveloped 2.5L turbopetrol at its core. All of the hybrid transmissions include a new P1 motor that handles starting, battery energy generation and energy deployment to assist propulsion. A P2 driving motor is responsible for propulsion and regenerative braking.
Designers state that the dual-motor set-up improves power, performance and fuel efficiency. It also achieves smooth shifting and reduced NVH for a more refined driving experience.
Power outputs for the new hybrid system range from a low- of 73kW to a high of 220kW.
Convenience features such as Stay Mode, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, and Smart Regenerative Braking are borrowed from the company's BEV programme. Bigger models will use the 2.5 turbopetrol as ICE power. However, a 1.6-litre turbo hybrid powertrain will also be available at some point.
Evidently enhanced cylinder flow and a high-efficiency cycle optimised for hybrids mean much improved fuel efficiency.
Engine start time is much quicker with the P1 acting as a starter motor. And precise control means the engine operates primarily in its high-efficiency range.
In the new Palisade hybrid, for example, maximum fuel efficiency is a claimed 7.1L/100km. System output is 245kW and 460Nm. Hyundai claims 45 per cent improved fuel efficiency, 19 per cent more power, and a nine percent improvement in maximum torque from its hybrid system compared with a 2.5 turbopetrol model.
The company is also planning to integrate other electrification technologies to enhance performance, efficiency and competitiveness in its new hybrid vehicles.

Kia EV9 GT brings pace and simulated gearshift
Kia's huge EV9 can now run 0-100 in 4.6sec, thanks to the introduction of a new 500hp+ GT model. That makes it one of the fastest three-row SUVs available. Only the seven-seat SQ7 is quicker, clocking in at 4.1sec. Oh, and the AMG GLS 63 does it in 4.2sec. Creating the added urge is a 160kW motor driving the front axle and a 270kW unit at the rear. The total system output is a claimed 374kW/800Nm. Prior to its arrival, the EV9 range-topper was the GT-Line. It outputs 283kW and 700Nm, for a 0-100 time of 6.0sec. As well as an uptick in output, the EV9 GT gets the simulated gearbox (virtual gear shift or VGS) and engine sounds, borrowed from sister brand Hyundai's Ioniq 5 N. Check out our review of the Kia EV9 GT-Line here. Paddles on the steering wheel control this and it adds engagement to the electric driving experience. Kia has also made a number of tweaks to the almost 2.7 tonne GT to ensure it corners with as much pace. It now comes with electronic suspension (adaptive damping). This adjusts firmness based on the car's drive mode. An electronic limited-slip differential distributes power to the wheels with the most traction. Wider 21-inch rubber helps it stick better while bigger front brakes (with green calipers) counteract the added performance. The EV9 GT's range claim is 450km per charge, slightly down on the 505km of the other dual-motor EV9s. A recharge of its 99.8kWh battery from 10-80 per cent takes 24 minutes, says Kia. The interior is similar to that of other EV9s, except that there is a range of neon-green highlights, on the steering wheel, and GT-only sports seats. These are finished in Alcantara and artificial leather. Ambient lighting can also be switched to the matching neon green hue. The GT arrives in Q3 this year in Europe, costing a similar amount to a Volvo EX90. It will be available in either six- or seven-seat configuration. A Kia NZ representative told us; 'While there are currently no plans to introduce the GT specification into the NZ market, we're always reviewing our product lineup and considering opportunities that best suit our customers. We'll be sure to share any updates if that changes in the future.'

Apple revamps CarPlay, expands digital car key support
Apple has unveiled a major upgrade to its in-car technology suite with iOS 26, bringing a refreshed look to CarPlay and expanded support for iPhone-based digital keys. The updates were revealed at the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference. CarPlay, Apple's in-vehicle infotainment platform, receives its biggest visual overhaul in years. The new 'Liquid Glass' design introduces smoother transitions, a more refined layout, and subtle lighting effects that adapt to light and dark modes. Notifications for calls and messages have been scaled back to reduce distraction. More significantly, iOS 26 introduces Live Activities and widget support, allowing real-time updates—like food deliveries or flight status—to appear on the car's screen without additional setup. Messaging also gets a boost, with support for emoji tapbacks directly within the CarPlay interface, and improved accessibility features such as sound detection alerts for emergency vehicles. While standard CarPlay continues to evolve, Apple's next-gen 'CarPlay Ultra' experience is still in its early stages. Aston Martin remains the only brand currently shipping it, though Apple has confirmed work is underway with several other marques, including Porsche, Ford, Hyundai and Kia. These systems promise a more immersive setup, with CarPlay taking over the full instrument cluster and climate controls. There's no firm timeline for when these advanced integrations will arrive in production vehicles in New Zealand, but the global momentum suggests it's a matter of when, not if. On the digital key front, Apple is also expanding its CarKey functionality, which allows an iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock, lock, and start supported vehicles. The feature is already available in a growing number of models from BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and others. Volvo, for example, recently enabled the feature on the EX30 via a software update. The system uses NFC or Ultra-Wideband (UWB) depending on the car, and allows remote access sharing with family or friends. It's part of Apple's push into secure, smartphone-based convenience that's becoming standard in high-end EVs. While Apple's announcements are largely global, many of the supported brands and models are sold in New Zealand—particularly those from Hyundai, Kia, Volvo, and BMW. The digital key functionality could soon become a standard offering across mid-to-premium vehicles sold locally, especially as over-the-air updates make rollout easier.
