Florian Hempel launches scathing attack on PDPA as German star claims 'that's how it feels'

PDC ace Joe Cullen recently questioned the purpose of the organisation and the German has now backed him up
German star Florian Hempel reckons he's no chance of understanding the role of the Professional Darts Players Association.
PDC ace Joe Cullen recently questioned the purpose of the organisation which the game's participants help to fund with a small percentage of their prize money. Speaking on the Game On podcast. Hempel says the troops on the circuit are struggling to acknowledge the purpose of the PDPA.

He said: 'None of us 128 Tour Card holders actually know what they do. If Joe Cullen, who's been in the game for 15 years, doesn't know what they do, then I certainly don't either.

"There are always a few guys from the PDPA around, like Peter Manley or Jamie Caven.
"Former players who seem to have landed a post-career role, just so they don't need to find other work.
"At least, that's how it feels. They each seem to have some small job, but none of them appear to have any real responsibilities.

"Jamie Caven just sits behind a laptop typing things in.
"He comes around once a year to talk to us, but it's never clear what it's about and it's never much.'

Hempel laughed at one anecdote as he added: 'Peter Manley once scolded me for posting something on Twitter that he thought was inappropriate.
"It was about a situation involving Mike de Decker. And I thought to myself, Peter Manley, the biggest bully darts has ever seen, is telling me what I can and can't post online. The irony was rich.'

Celtic fans should demand transfer truth, the big Rangers Mikey Moore debate and the Premier Sports Cup scandal

Join our team every Friday for a mix of serious debate and a lighter look at the major sporting events Game On - Rangers' Champions League chances | Celtic's transfer activity | Premiership surprises Are you keen to catch up on all of Scottish football's biggest talking points, but have just two minutes to spare for each? ‌ Well you're in luck, because Game On from Record Sport does just that - dissecting all the major issues, but against the clock to prevent our intrepid team from rambling on too much. ‌ We will debate all the major global sporting topics in a fast-paced manner as the team get their points across before the whistle blows. The handy segments of the show mean there's no waffling on, we get straight to the point and you can get your fix in a quick and easy manner. ‌ The opinionated duo of Michael Gannon and Gavin Berry are on this week's episode of Game On which airs every Friday but other members of the Record Sport team will frequently take their seat behind the microphone in the Record Sport studio. This week the pair discuss whether Rangers would better developing their own Academy players than signing talent from the English Premier League such as new recruit Mikey Moore from Tottenham, if Celtic fans are overreacting at the lack of transfer activity and debate the big issues ahead of the Scottish Premiership kick off. Game On is available every Friday on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Would Rangers be better developing their own players than signing young Premier League talent on loan? Michael Gannon: I take the point but there's also the here and now - Rangers need quality in the attacking areas. Long term, I can understand it might halt the progress of some players. But it should inspire these youngsters. We need to put responsibility on Scottish players. Unless you are better than the guy coming in then you won't get a game. If Findlay Curtis is better than Mikey Moore he'll get a game. Gavin Berry: One of the problems here, when you think of Rangers specifically, is that they have brought in a lot of these guys who haven't cut it. I don't think Mikey Moore is in that bracket - he seems to be a generational talent - in that's why I agree Rangers need to deal with the here and now and will have a better chance of winning the league with him than without him. But fans are probably a bit sceptical when you think back to guys like Sheyi Ojo, Ovie Ejaria and even further back to Paul Le Guen's time you had Lee Martin. ‌ Are Celtic fans overreacting to their club's transfer activity this summer? Michael Gannon: Overreacting is a national trait when it comes to our football team but let's take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Celtic are going into the start of this season weaker than January. They've lost Kyogo, Kuhn and Jota to injury. They've brought in Nygren who looks a good player but isn't like for like and Kieran Tierney who we know is a good player. Celtic fans are stepping back and asking why they are weaker with a pile of money in the bank and they are right to ask the question having bought season tickets. They have a Champions League qualifier in three weeks time which is a make or break game. ‌ Gavin Berry: Paul McStay will come out and unfurl the championship flag on Sunday... Michael Gannon: Can he play right wing? Gavin Berry:... Any Celtic fan who wants to know how lucky they are just now should talk to him or fans from his generation. Celtic were a penalty shootout from a sixth treble in eight years. ‌ Should the seeding system be scrapped for the last-16 stage Premier Sports Cup draw? Michael Gannon: It's scandalous. Our game is already so much weighted in favour of the bigger teams, Celtic and Rangers, and the last thing they need is more help. It should be an opportunity for other teams to win a trophy. It would be healthier. Gavin Berry: The draw loses something because of it. You can't have an Old Firm or Edinburgh derby. Get them all in, take your chances. Get the meaty ties. I would scrap it. If you're Alloa and you've landed an Ibrox payday then it's great because it increases the chances of that. It should also guarantee more competitive quarter and semi finals. England's women are Euro champs, what's happened to Scotland? Michael Gannon: I was in Italy with Celtic in Como. We were looking for a bar to watch Rangers' first leg of their Champions League qualifier. We found a bar with TV screens and they said they were going to. put the football on but they put Italy v England Women's game on, so it was interesting to watch. It feels like Scotland have stagnated since the World Cup and wasted a couple of years. We have regarded on the older guard. Gavin Berry: We can't compare to England. Chloe Kelly has won the Champions League with Arsenal and was the super sub. We have Caroline Weir and Erin Cuthbert but don't have strengthen in depth. It's a new era under Melissa Andreatta and it's been encouraging early on - hopefully we can be at the World Cup in Brazil in two years' time.

Disgraced darts star returns after assaulting opponent in pub tournament and being slapped with eight-month ban

ADAM SMITH-NEALE says he has no regrets over the alteration that led to an eight-month ban from darts and the loss of his PDC Tour Card. Last year the former professional darts player accepted a charge that he had assaulted an opponent in a local pub competition. 3 3 3 CCTV footage emerged online of an incident that took place on March 9, 2024 at an amateur event – the Nuneaton Darts Open at the Lucky Break Sports and Pool Bar in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. An investigation by the Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) found that 'after Smith-Neale lost the match, his opponent offered his hand and Smith-Neale punched him in the face'. The 31-year-old claimed he had 'felt threatened by his opponent, which was why he punched him' but that reason 'was not fully accepted' by the DRA Disciplinary Committee. The DRA suspension was backdated to March 12, 2024 – the date of his initial ban – and he was barred from playing in any sanctioned event until November 12. During that time off, Smith-Neale – who has never played at the PDC World Darts Championship at Ally Pally – ended up losing his status as a professional thrower due to his inactivity. Smith-Neale, known as Big Dog, has returned to television screens this week with appearances on the MODUS Super Series in Portsmouth, which is on Pluto TV. In an interview with Darts World magazine, the 2018 BDO World Masters champion has spoken for the first time about what happened from his perspective. He claims a rival had 'threatened my family' before and after their infamous contest that went viral online – and that is why he gave him a 'hard slap'. Smith-Neale said: 'It was on a Saturday afternoon in a local near where I live in Nuneaton. 'I was in the semi-final of this tournament and playing a lad…who is just a couple of years older than me. Luke Littler sends Blackpool wild as he wins World Matchplay Darts 'There was a bit of needle and he made threats towards me which plenty of people heard. 'Then my mum got involved and he had a go back at her, making threats also. 'It was kind of decided between us that we would sort things out after the match. 'Then, as he threw the winning dart and walked to retrieve it from the board, he made a derogatory comment under his breath – well, it was loud enough to clearly hear. 'So when he turned round, I gave him a kind of hard slap which I guess looked like a punch on the video footage. 'They (the DRA) told me I was suspended pending an investigation for bringing the game into disrepute. 'Yeah, I knew a few weeks before (the ban) went public. They gave me eight months, which was actually quite clever. 'It still meant I could attend the World Championship qualifiers and Q-School the following January if needed.' Asked by Darts World if he regretted his actions, Smith-Neale replied: 'If someone threatens my family, I would do the same thing again.' Smith-Neale – whose son Freddie was born in January – now works for a tech company. But he is keen to try his hand at PDC Q School in 2026 and potentially regain his place on the Tour next year.
