11 new arrests over fatal Serbian train station disaster involving 2 Chinese companies
The concrete canopy of the newly renovated station in the northern city of Novi Sad collapsed on November 1, 2024, in a disaster widely blamed on corruption and poor oversight.
It sparked a wave of student-led protests and led to the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and the fall of his government.
The public prosecutor's office in Novi Sad opened an investigation into the accident and deaths.
In February, the public prosecutor's office for organised crime opened another probe into the corruption aspect of the case, leading to Friday's arrests.
The 11 include former construction, transport and infrastructure minister Tomislav Momirovic as well as former acting director of the state-run Serbian Railway Infrastructure company Nebojsa Surlan, prosecutors said.
Another former transport minister, Goran Vesic, who was one of the first to resign after the accident, was wanted in the case but was hospitalised on Thursday, prosecutors said. The Nova.rs news site said Vesic underwent emergency surgery on Friday.
Two companies — China Railway International and China Communications Construction (CRI-CCC) — as well as France's Egis and Hungary's Utiber were in charge of the railway station works.
According to the prosecutor's office, the two former ministers and three other suspects enabled CRI-CCC to charge more than US$1.2 billion for work and then carry out additional work worth more than US$64 million.
This enabled CRI-CCC to obtain an 'illegal financial gain' of more than US$18 million, the statement said.
Since the accident, protests have been growing across Serbia, with some bringing hundreds of thousands of people to the streets to demand a transparent investigation and early elections.
Thousands of people rallied in new protests late Friday in several cities, including the capital Belgrade, to commemorate nine months since the accident.
'It's a fight against the system, for which human lives are worth less than the amounts thrown around in the public tenders,' one student taking part in a demonstration in the city of Novi Sad said.

Photo: Reuters US envoy Steve Witkoff on Saturday met the anguished families of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza, as fears for the captives' survival mounted almost 22 months into the war sparked by Hamas's October 2023 attack. Witkoff was greeted with some applause and pleas for assistance from hundreds of protesters gathered in Tel Aviv, before going into a closed meeting with the families. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum confirmed the meeting was underway and videos shared online showed Witkoff arriving as families chanted "Bring them home!" and "We need your help." The visit came one day after Witkoff visited a US-backed aid station in Gaza, to inspect efforts to get food into the devastated Palestinian territory. After the meeting, the Forum released a statement saying that Witkoff had given them a personal commitment that he and US President Donald Trump would work to return the remaining hostages. The US, along with Egypt and Qatar, had been mediating ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israel that would allow the hostages to be released and humanitarian aid to flow more freely. But talks broke down last month and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is under increasing domestic pressure to come up with another way to secure the missing hostages, alive or dead. Netanyahu is also facing international calls to open Gaza's borders to more food aid, after UN and humanitarian agencies warned that more than two million Palestinian civilians are facing starvation. Witkoff visited a food distribution point in Gaza run by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation on Friday, promising that Trump would come up with a plan to better feed civilians. (AFP)

US, Nato seek to supply Ukraine with weapons paid for by allies
The US and Nato are working on a novel approach to supply Ukraine with weapons using funds from Nato countries to pay for the purchase or transfer of US arms, according to three sources familiar with the matter. Advertisement The renewed transatlantic cooperation on Ukraine comes as US President Donald Trump has expressed frustration with Moscow's ongoing attacks on its neighbour. Trump, who initially took a more conciliatory tone toward Russia as he tried to end the more than three-year war in Ukraine, has threatened to start imposing tariffs and other measures if Moscow shows no progress toward ending the conflict by August 8. The president said last month the US would supply weapons to Ukraine, paid for by European allies, but did not indicate how this would be done. Nato countries, Ukraine, and the United States were developing a new mechanism that would focus on getting US weapons to Ukraine from the Priority Ukraine Requirements List, known by the acronym PURL, the sources said. Advertisement Ukraine would prioritise the weapons it needs in tranches of roughly US$500 million, and Nato allies – coordinated by Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte – would then negotiate among themselves who would donate or pay for items on the list.
