Magoebaskloof explosion: Woman recounts her ‘war zone' experience
TZANEEN – Rene Viljoen, the Programme Coordinator at Warriors Academy, will never forget how the sound of explosions jolted her awake, and the mountain was lit up in flames. In the early hours of this morning, she was awoken by what she described as the sound of an 'attack in a war zone,' only to discover that a truck carrying gas cylinders had exploded above Magoebaskloof Ruskamp, triggering a forest fire and a string of thunderous blasts that rocked the area. Read more: R71 remains closed after early morning gas explosion in Magoebaskloof Rene, terrifyingly close to the scene, described how the forest came 'alive with fire,' each blast illuminating the darkness like a signal flare. With adrenaline surging and sleep impossible, she joined others in watching the inferno unfold. 'I was afraid of a forest fire that could get out of control,' she wrote in a Facebook post just hours later, still reeling from the chaos. The fear was not unfounded. The explosion closed the R71 and sent flames racing down the mountainside, dangerously close to Warriors Camp. 'I am not sure what happened, and I hope the driver escaped,' she added. Later information revealed that the driver had managed to get away without injury. Emergency services – Letaba Fire Protection Association, Tzaneen Fire Brigade, SARZA Limpopo, Disaster Management and the Tzaneen Emergency Support Team – descended on the area swiftly, battling both flames and treacherous terrain. By 04:30, teams were still working to contain the blaze. But accessing the actual site of the explosion remained too risky. Staff from Warriors Camp rushed toward the scene despite not knowing the extent of the danger. 'They ran to assist, not knowing what they were heading to,' Rene said. Others stayed back, preparing spray cans and water to defend their homes against the advancing fire. By morning, the flames had subsided, replaced by the blinking lights of emergency crews. But for Rene, the emotional fire still raged. 'I'm sure I'll crash and fall asleep this afternoon,' she said. 'Just too much adrenaline released. Survival instinct.' Local WhatsApp groups say that the driver lost control of the truck when the brakes failed. Authorities have since confirmed that the R71 will remain closed until further notice as investigations continue, but one thing is clear: for those who witnessed the devastation up close it was hours of fire and fear, but also courage. Rescued barn owls prepare for release at Steyn City Equestrian Centre
The rescued barn owls are now one step closer to a life in the wild, thanks to a collaboration between and Steyn City Equestrian Centre, which recently hosted an owl ringing day as part of their structured 21-day release programme. The owls, recovered from the roof of a home in Daveyton by SPCA Germiston, were collected by Valentino Crowder, on behalf of and brought into care to prepare them for release. The Steyn City Equestrian Centre provided the perfect setting for the release programme, as stables with owl boxes offer an ideal habitat for barn owls, which naturally helps control rodent populations without the need for poison. 'These owls are skilled hunters that offer a sustainable, eco-friendly solution for rodent control in urban and rural settings,' explained Itumeleng Maroga, of Also read: EcoSolutions, working with Johannesburg Wildlife Vet, begins release process of four Spotted Eagle Owls at Cedar Lake During the event, each owl was fitted with a uniquely numbered metal identification ring by certified bird ringer Arjen van Zwieten, supported by Maroga and Ntsane Mothibeli, from These rings contribute to long-term conservation research and data collection, providing valuable insights into barn owl movements and survival in the wild. The owls, now approximately two and a half months old, will complete the 21-day release programme that allows them to acclimatise to their new environment, while still receiving food support. This increases their chances of survival and independence in the wild. 'This programme is not only about conservation,' said Maroga. 'It's about shifting mindsets and educating communities on the importance of owls in urban and rural ecosystems. Recurring blockage of sewer on 11th Avenue will be fixed
Ward 107 councillor Floyd Ngwenya has confirmed that a blocked sewer on 11th Avenue, Alexandra, has been reported to Johannesburg Water (JW) and is set to be attended to on July 16. The announcement follows over a week of mounting complaints from residents grappling with the foul stench and hazardous waste. The blockage, located just metres away from Sanele Ndaba's store, has been a recurring issue. Ndaba said the drain first became clogged more than two weeks ago. 'I called JW to log a ticket and got a reference number. A few days later, Ngwenya came, escalated the matter, and it was fixed.' However, within 24 hours, the same sewer reportedly blocked again. Read more: Greenville residents slam unresponsive councillor as sewer crisis festers Nearby resident Patrick Khuphani confirmed the issue re-emerged quickly and remained unattended, prompting concerns among nearby residents. With sewage gushing into the street, visible faeces swirled in the stream and used tissues clung to the tar, creating an unhygienic environment that has impacted Ndaba's food business. 'It affects the customers because it is close to the store.' Resident Walter Matlou, who often escalates service delivery complaints, said he had notified Ngwenya again, but had received no feedback for four days. Despite this, Matlou expressed confidence in the councillor's usual responsiveness. On the day Alex News visited, the situation revealed deeper behavioural challenges. One senior resident was seen dumping a bucket filled with water and waste into the flowing sewage. When asked whether she feared blocking the storm water drain, she replied: 'If you look inside [the storm water drain], you will find beds, and tons of plastics. This is Alexandra, no one can fix it.' Ngwenya responded that he was only aware of the earlier blockage. 'Please note that I am aware of the situation. I reported it last time, when it got blocked. I was not made aware of the fact that now it's blocked [again]. I've reported it now. It will be attended to tomorrow.'
