50 animal births & 25 deaths at Byculla zoo between Apr '24 and Mar '25: RTI
Among the 50 births, additions included three Humboldt penguin chicks (two males and a female), 12 cockatiels, and several spotted and barking deer. The zoo also reported births of Rhesus macaques, Indian flapshell turtles, and a painted stork chick during the year.
On the other hand, the 25 recorded deaths include six spotted deer, three Indian flapshell turtles, two budgerigars, and individual losses of larger species — sambar deer, an elephant, and a striped hyena.
The zoo also lost a newborn painted stork chick in the same period.

The data is part of a larger six-year report of animal births and deaths at the zoo sought by Pimenta under RTI, showing long-term trends in zoo animal health and breeding success. Between 2019 and 2025, Byculla zoo recorded 286 animal births and 275 deaths. The worst period was year 2020–21, when the zoo recorded 14 births against 59 deaths, which could be due to pandemic-related challenges.
A senior BMC official said works are ongoing to ensure improved animal welfare at all levels, which can be seen in the number of visitors. In the past five years, over 1 crore have visited the facility, shows civic data.

BMC's spl care waste collection yet to take off in some wards
Mumbai: While a large number of housing societies and other establishments have registered for the Domestic Sanitary Waste and Special Care Waste Service, housing societies in some wards have complained that the BMC is yet to offer proper sanitary waste collection services in their areas. However, the civic body attributed this to vehicle shortages and logistic issues at the ward level, which they said would be resolved soon. "An office bearer of our society in the M-East ward approached the local ward office twice in the last two months to enquire about the special collection service. However, ward officials said they are yet to start the services and would inform the society once it starts," said a member of a housing society in Govandi. A senior civic official said, "The service is registration-based as of now. A few BMC wards are facing vehicle shortages and other logistic issues, which are currently being resolved." "The BMC should send a circular to the housing societies about the service. People should be made aware of what kind of waste falls into these categories," said Rajkumar Sharma from Chembur-based advanced locality management and networking action committee (ALMANAC). Dhaval Shah, director of Andheri Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens' Association, said, "The civic body could have called a meeting of all ALMs and area residents' associations in various wards and informed them about the initiative. All we know about the initiative is through newspapers." The BMC started a dedicated domestic sanitary and special care waste collection and management service on April 22, and as of June 30, the civic body collected 61.5 tonnes of domestic sanitary and special care waste. As many as 1,919 establishments, including 1,140 housing societies, 677 beauty parlours, 27 hostels, and 75 educational institutions, registered for the collection service as of July 1. Currently, an average of 1.7 tonnes of such waste is collected daily and transported to six plasma incineration facilities within BMC jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, the deadline for the Yamuna cleaning mission, for which ₹8,500 crore has already been allocated, has been pushed back from 2023 to 2025, and then to 2026. The Delhi Jal Board has received at least ₹1,200 crore of public funds as of 2023; however, our reportage indicates that most of the 37 sewage treatment plants are still outdated or underperforming. India became one of the earliest cradles of civilisation because of its magnificent rivers—whether it's the Sindhu-Saraswati basin in the west, the Vaigai and Cauvery in the south, or the Ganga-Yamuna belt across the north. Yet, the sad truth is that we are choking them with administrative apathy, which matches our polluting public culture. The cleanup of the once-putrid Thames in England and Kamo in Kyoto happened after decades-long public campaigns. The much longer Indian rivers need responsible riparian development alongside continuous conservation. To understand the shameful gap between tall promises flowing from the thousands of crores spent in the name of cleaning them and the reality, one need not look farther than the one flowing by the national capital.

Best dogs given trophies in Madurai
Best performing dogs were awarded trophies during the two-day dog show event conducted by Madurai Canine Club at Tamukkam ground here on Sunday. S. Vinayaga Moorthy, Madurai Canine Club, show committee member, said that the two-day event had native dog breeds show, Great Dane dogs show and breed confirmation show. In the breed confirmation event, 306 dogs of 45 different breeds, both Indian and International breeds, took part. Judges from Thailand and New Zealand based on the International Standards determined by Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI), selected the winning dogs, he added. 'The standards are based on various aspects like colour, size, body type, height, weight, etc., the dogs,' he noted. A German Shepard breed dog from Ooty won the first prize in the breed confirmation category.
