Russia's announcement on Thursday that it had captured Chasiv Yar marks yet another blow for Kyiv after months of accumulating setbacks across the sprawling front line in eastern and southern Ukraine.
It underscores systemic problems plaguing the Ukrainian army, like manpower shortages and logistics problems, that have given Russian forces the edge after three and a half years of brutal fighting.
The Ukrainian army denied that the strategic hilltop settlement had fallen to Russian forces.
If confirmed, the capture would come after many months of intensive battles in the area that have seen Russia make painstaking but incremental gains.
Russian forces had advanced along the flanks of Chasiv Yar before pushing into the city, heavily bombing Ukrainian positions until it was untenable to hold them.
Images released by the Ukrainian military earlier this year, showing rows of smouldering and skeletal Soviet-era housing blocs and lines of shredded trees, attest to the ferocity of Russia's shelling of Chasiv Yar.
The town had a population of some 12,000 people before the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

That same month, AFP video journalist Arman Soldin was killed aged 32 by incoming rocket fire on the outskirts of the city.
Russian forces first crossed an important waterway in the town in 2024, and a turning point came when Ukrainian forces ceded a large industrial facility and a key defensive position in Chasiv Yar in January this year.
If confirmed, its fall will now pave the way for Russian forces to advance on remaining civilian strongholds in the eastern Donetsk region, like Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
The Kremlin has made the complete capture of the Donetsk region its military priority and already in late 2022 claimed that the industrial territory was part of Russia.

Ukrainian drones spark fire at Sochi oil depot
An Ukrainian drone attack sparked a fire at an oil depot in Sochi, the Russian resort that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympic which is 400 kilometres (250 miles) from the Ukrainian border, authorities said Sunday. Ukraine has regularly hit Russian oil and gas infrastructure in response to attacks on its own territory since Russia began its offensive in February 2022. "Sochi suffered a drone attack by the Kyiv regime last night," the governor of Russia's Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratiev, said on Telegram. He said drone wreckage hit an "oil tank, which caused a fire" during the night-time attack. Sochi's mayor, Andrei Proshunin, said there were no victims and that the fire was put out several hours later. Air strikes on Sochi are relatively rare compared to some other Russian cities. Major Russian gas pipeline hit in Ukrainian drone strikes
Ukraine has struck a critical gas pipeline after launching a wave of drone strikes across the border in Russia, reportedly hitting key military sites. The Kyiv Post reports the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline in Russia's Volgograd region has been shut down indefinitely following the attacks. The pipeline operated by Gazprom transports natural gas from Turkmenistan into Russia via Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, and reportedly supplies energy to key military facilities. Ukraine said on Saturday, local time, it hit multiple military targets and a gas pipeline in Russia, where local authorities said three people were killed and two others wounded. Ukraine's SBU security service said the strikes, carried out Friday night by long-distance drones, hit a military airfield in the southwestern town of Primorsko-Akhtarsk. They caused a fire in an areas where Iranian-built Shahed drones – relied on by Russia to attack Ukraine – were stored, the SBU said. It said the strikes also hit a company, Elektropribor, in Russia's southern Penza region, which it said 'works for the Russian military-industrial complex', making military digital networks, aviation devices, armoured vehicles and ships. The governor for the Penza region, Oleg Melnichenko, said on Telegram that one woman had been killed and two other people were wounded in that attack. It followed a missile and drone strike on Kyiv on Thursday, which killed at least 31 people including five children, most living in an apartment building hit by a missile. 'The Ukrainian Defense Forces have successfully struck verified Russian targets involved in supporting armed aggression against our state,' the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff said in a Telegram post. Kyiv denies any Russian presence in the Dnipropetrovsk area. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has consistently rejected calls for a ceasefire in the more than three-year conflict, said Friday that he wanted peace but that his demands for ending Moscow's military offensive were 'unchanged'. Those demands include that Ukraine abandon territory and end ambitions to join NATO. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said only Putin could end the war and renewed his call for a meeting between the two leaders. 'The United States has proposed this. Ukraine has supported it. What is needed is Russia's readiness,' he wrote on X.
