UOB, FMM, SMF ink deal to boost manufacturing ties
PETALING JAYA: United Overseas Bank (M) Bhd (UOB Malaysia) has signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) and the Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) to strengthen regional economic integration and promote foreign direct investment (FDI) flows.
The bank, in a statement, said the partnership aims to strengthen the Malaysia-Singapore manufacturing corridor by leveraging UOB's regional network and expertise to help businesses, especially SMEs, expand across borders and grow sustainably.
It supports the 2025 Asean Summit's theme of inclusivity, of which Malaysia chaired and hosted, ensuring that businesses of all sizes can participate in and benefit from regional growth. The agreement also builds on the momentum of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) agreement between both governments.
UOB Malaysia CEO Ng Wei Wei said the bank is proud to be an early JS-SEZ supporter, having launched the Green Lane with Invest Johor, set up SEZ Desks, and introduced fast-track account openings.
'Since 2024, UOB has committed RM11.5bil in financing to support businesses in Johor and is actively facilitating RM10bil of FDI flows into the zone.
'Through this MoU, we look forward to working with FMM and SMF to help their members seize cross-border opportunities and contribute to Asean's industrial growth,' she said.
The MoU reflects UOB's long-term commitment to Asean's sustainable growth, aiming to promote cross-border opportunities and deepen collaboration in trade, investment, and manufacturing between Singapore and Malaysia, for stakeholders and ecosystem partners.
To support these efforts, UOB will provide advisory services, including tailored market entry and in-market guidance for FMM and SMF members. These services will help businesses navigate the financial and operational aspects of establishing a presence in Singapore, Malaysia, and across South-East Asia.
FMM president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai said the collaboration sets the stage for more cross-border success stories under the JS-SEZ.

Why Singaporeans are buying Porsches and BMWs in Johor for a weekend thrill
JOHOR BARU — On weekdays, Singaporean entrepreneur Iylia Kwan drives a Toyota Corolla Altis from his family home in Yishun, but on weekends, he hits Malaysia's highways in a used Porsche Cayenne SUV registered across the border. The 36-year-old bachelor, who rents a semi-detached house in Pasir Gudang, bought the secondhand 2009 Cayenne for RM50,000, a fraction of what a similar car would cost in Singapore with COE included, The Straits Times reported. He recently added a used Mercedes-Benz E-Class with a personalised number plate as a birthday present to himself, calling it a 'fated' buy. Kwan is one of a growing number of Singaporeans buying sports and luxury cars in Malaysia, driven by rising COE prices and restrictions on car ownership back home. While Singapore bans citizens and PRs from using foreign-registered vehicles locally, many simply store their Malaysian cars across the border for weekend use. Some rent parking spots in Johor Baru condominiums from RM200 to RM400 monthly, while others rely on friends' homes to keep their vehicles safe. Carlogy, a new 24,000 sq ft vehicle storage facility in Skudai run by two Singaporeans, offers air-conditioned parking and concierge services to cater to this niche demand. Luxury and reconditioned vehicles are significantly cheaper in Malaysia, with Johor car dealers reporting increased sales to Singaporeans in recent years. Singaporean motoring fans like Kelvin Kok and Afeeq Anwar use their Malaysian-registered vehicles for leisure drives, motorsports events and even routine grocery runs in Johor. Experts warn, however, that cross-border car ownership comes with risks, urging buyers to ensure proper registration and insurance to avoid complications.

More than 200 foreigners granted Level-2 e-ID accounts in Vietnam's Dong Nai province
Immigration officers conduct the procedures to issue level-2 electronic identification accounts for a foreign business owner in Dong Nai Province. — VNA/VNS DONG NAI: The Immigration Division of southern Dong Nai Province has issued level-2 electronic identification (e-ID) accounts to over 200 foreign residents during the first two days of implementation, as part of the Ministry of Public Security's 50-day campaign running from July 1 through Aug 19. Most of the recipients are representatives of foreign-invested enterprises (FDI) operating in the province. Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Thi Dung, deputy head of the division, said that Đồng Nai is home to nearly 3,000 FDI enterprises and about 10,000 foreigners residing, indicating a high demand for Level-2 e-ID issuance. To maximise convenience, the division has set up a dedicated service area with one guidance desk and three biometric data collection stations, she said. Officers are working in three consecutive shifts from 7.30am to 9.30pm daily, including weekends. Information on requirements for obtaining e-IDs has been made public through social media platforms, FDI business associations, the Đồng Nai Industrial Zones Authority, and the Đồng Nai public security social media page to ensure transparency and streamline the process, Dung added. The Immigration Division has also partnered with telecom service provider Vinaphone to assist foreigners in registering SIM cards under their names — one of the prerequisites for obtaining a digital ID, thereby enabling foreigners to complete all required procedures on-site without needing to travel between multiple locations. Additionally, to assist those not fluent in Vietnamese, the division has assigned officers proficient in foreign languages such as English, Chinese, and Korean to provide guidance and interpretation services. This has significantly reduced processing time and improved overall satisfaction among applicants. She said the division will continue to enhance communication efforts and closely coordinate with businesses, industrial parks, and international organisations to ensure that all eligible foreigners receive their digital ID. The initiative is expected to improve population management and facilitate smoother transactions and administrative procedures for foreigners living and working in Vietnam. — Vietnam News/ANN

Malaysia continues to lead regionally for digital infrastructure
BMI, a unit of Fitch Solutions, expects Malaysia to maintain its lead as a hub for digital infrastructure investment in Southeast Asia, with Johor remaining a prominent destination for data centre investment. In a statement yesterday, BMI said the investment is driven by the new Singapore economic zone (SEZ), which will likely lead to more industrial parks being introduced and more areas being put up for acquisition to develop new data centres. 'Our estimates show over 3.2 gigawatt (GW) of planned capacity entering the Malaysian market, followed by Indonesia with 1.8GW and the Philippines lagging significantly with just under 180 megawatt (MW),' it said. The statement said Alibaba Cloud will also increase its presence in Southeast Asia, with data centres being planned in Malaysia and the Philippines. It is also expected to support the region's rapidly growing digital economy and drive adoption of cloud services among local businesses. The statement said Malaysia remains a popular destination for digital infrastructure investment with demand continuing to shift away from Singapore. In a separate statement today, BMI said although the new power tariffs may lead to short-term challenges for data centre projects in Malaysia, its dominant position in emerging Southeast Asia is unlikely to be dramatically altered as demand for cloud computing remains strong. 'Some Malaysian data centre platforms will look to address demand from non-artificial intelligence (AI) related use or potentially less intensive AI use cases, to bypass the tariff. 'This development is expected to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and investments in sustainability,' it said. The statement also added that adopting renewable energy sources is necessary as power continues to be the leading issue for many markets. — BERNAMA
