Grand Canyon University's move to the Mountain West has been accelerated. Lopes to compete this fall
The school in Phoenix was initially scheduled to transition from the Western Athletic Conference to its new league on July 1, 2026. The Mountain West offered an earlier transition, however, allowing the school to compete for conference championships this fall.
'The addition of Grand Canyon for the 2025-26 academic year is a significant win for the student-athletes at GCU and in the Mountain West,' conference commissioner Gloria Nevarez said in a statement.
Grand Canyon will be one of 14 schools competing in the conference next season. The accelerated transition comes after five Mountain West schools announced they intend to depart the conference and join the Pac-12 in 2026. Those schools are Utah State, Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Colorado State.
'Grand Canyon brings elite recruiting, a passionate fanbase, and state-of-the-art facilities, elevating the Mountain West's competitiveness and national profile,' Nevarez said. 'In a time when the student-athlete experience is of utmost importance, we felt it was in the best interest to allow them to compete for conference championships and the NCAA postseason immediately.'
Seventeen varsity teams will compete in the Mountain West, including men's and women's basketball which have been in the national spotlight in recent years during the NCAA Tournament. Grand Canyon's historically successful men's volleyball team was cut in April.
'GCU is excited for this opportunity for our student-athletes, the Havocs and our fanbase,' GCU athletic director Jamie Boggs said. 'After winning 76 conference championships, this opportunity best positions GCU to be nationally competitive, and we are excited about the vision and future of the Mountain West.'

SEC Network schedule for Texas A&M takeover revealed
The 2024 calendar year for Texas A&M Athletics was both memorable and forgettable, depending on the sport. However, nothing matches the departure of former Aggies head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle from the program just days after A&M fell to Tennessee in the College World Series Championship matchup, leaving to join the Texas Longhorns in an unpredictable move that only enhanced the rivalry that was renewed on the gridiron a year ago. Still, Texas A&M's championship run was by far one of the most exciting seasons in program history, and will remain in a positive light despite Schlossnagle leaving. Outside of baseball, the softball team nearly made it to the College World Series before losing to Texas in the Super Regionals, while the men's basketball team, during Buzz Williams' final year at the helm, made it back to the NCAA Tournament for a third consecutive season. Texas A&M's 2024 football team entered a new era under head coach Mike Elko, who returned to College Station after two seasons leading the Duke Blue Devils and serving as Jimbo Fisher's defensive coordinator for four seasons. Elko and his new staff were provided a muligan like every new head coach, but after building a 7-1 record despite several key injury issues, the loss of star running back Le'Veon Moss, paired with then-freshman QB Marcel Reed's issues in the pocket, were too much to overcome. Despite A&M's 1-4 finish, there were plenty of incredible moments, including the comeback win over LSU during an electric night inside a packed Kyle Field. On Friday, it was announced that Texas A&M will take over the SEC Network's schedule, an annual event that typically occurs in July. Longhorns basketball adds talented center from London
Texas Longhorns basketball has been busy improving their roster this week. On Tuesday, they signed a talented center in Lewis Obiorah. The London native spent last year playing at Barking Abbey Basketball Academy. While he may be an unknown to many in Texas, Obiorah has been making headlines in the Elite Academy Basketball League. Last year, Obiorah earned EABL championship finals MVP honors while leading Barking Abbey to the EABL championship. He averaged 10.7 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game and was a human highlight reel every time he stepped on the court. In his first year with the Longhorns, Obiorah will join a roster that has undergone a lot of change. New head coach Sean Miller has been busy in the transfer portal upgrading the offense. Those additions include Dailyn Swain, Camden Heide, Matas Vokietaitis, and Simeon Wilcher. That group will be tasked with turning a program coming off a disappointing season. The Longhorns posted a 19-16 overall record during the 2024-2025 campaign. They struggled on the road and did not do well defending their home court. In his first season calling the shots, Miller is looking to get Texas back to the NCAA Tournament to make a deep March Madness run. With the start of the regular season only a few months away, the Longhorns roster includes three European players. Earlier this week, they signed Germany's Declan Duru Jr. Now that the roster is mostly set, the Longhorns can focus on building their team chemistry. While he still has a lot of room to grow, Obiorah has the potential to be a very good player for the Longhorns and gives Sean Miller another option at center.
