Venus Williams triumphant during comeback at Washington Open

Malay Mail6 days ago
WASHINGTON, July 22 — Venus Williams enjoyed a winning return to tennis after more than a year away from the game as the 45-year-old American teamed up with compatriot Hailey Baptiste to win their round of 16 women's doubles tie at the Washington Open on Monday.
The seven-times Grand Slam singles champion had not played a competitive match in 16 months, with her last appearance on the WTA Tour coming at the Miami Open in March last year.
Williams and Baptiste beat Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue 6-3 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals in Washington, and the former world number one said if felt 'inspiring' to be back on court.
'It wasn't easy for us but we brought it together quickly as a team. I love this game and still hitting it big,' Williams told Sky Sports.
Williams enjoyed playing with 23-year-old Baptiste so much she joked that she should have teamed up with her years ago instead of playing with her younger sister Serena, who she won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles with.
'I could see that we were going to be a good team. We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right?' she said. 'I think Serena was just in the way.' — Reuters

Tennis-Fernandez cruises past Kalinskaya to claim Washington Open title

Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images/File Photo (Reuters) -Leylah Fernandez earned the biggest win of her career as she beat Anna Kalinskaya 6-1 6-2 in the Washington Open final on Sunday. After a brief rain delay in the nation's capital, Fernandez - who was just one game away from defeat in the semi-finals - overcame the extreme humidity to capture her first WTA 500 title in her first final in over a year. The Canadian gained the upper hand early on, securing a break thanks to a Kalinskaya double fault, before breaking again with a sharp return winner. The Russian world number 48 appeared to struggle physically as Fernandez calmly served out the opening set in just under half an hour. Kalinskaya could not find her stride in the match, dropping serve twice in the second set, while the 22-year-old Fernandez remained in control, never looking back on her way to the title. Fernandez will look to carry her momentum into her home tournament, the Canadian Open in Montreal, where she faces Australia's Maya Joint in the first round. Kalinskaya, who will play against American Ann Li, remains in search of her maiden WTA title after another setback in a final. Bournemouth breeze past Everton 3-0 in Premier League Summer Series opener

NEW YORK, July 27 — Bournemouth cruised to a 3-0 victory over Everton in the opening round of the Premier League Summer Series exhibition tournament at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium today. Goals from Philip Billing, Dango Outtara and Daniel Adu-Adjei sealed a comfortable win for Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth side in a game played in sweltering conditions. After a low-key first half, Billing fired Bournemouth into the lead in the 55th minute, gliding away from his marker at the edge of the area before unleashing a ferocious shot that flew past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. England international Pickford was beaten again four minutes later after a move that began when Outtara surged clear down the left flank. Everton defender Nathan Patterson looked to have covered the danger, but a poor touch allowed Burkina Faso international Outtara to hammer a shot high into the net past Pickford's near post. Adu-Adjei made it 3-0 to the Cherries in the 69th minute, pouncing on an underhit backpass from Jake O'Brien to coolly finish past Pickford. The four-team Premier League-backed tournament continues later yesterday with Manchester United taking on West Ham at the same venue. — AFP

Tennis-Kalinskaya upsets Raducanu, Fernandez battles into Washington Open final

Jul 26, 2025; Washington, D.C., USA; Anna Kalinskaya celebrates after match point against Emma Raducanu (GBR)(not pictured) in a women's singles semi-final on day six of the Mubadala Citi DC Open at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images (Reuters) -Anna Kalinskaya outclassed Britain's Emma Raducanu 6–4 6–3 at the Washington Open on Saturday to advance to the final, where she will face Leylah Fernandez. After a strong start from both players, Kalinskaya secured the first break to lead 5–4 and served out the opening set, handing Raducanu her first dropped set of the tournament. The two exchanged early breaks in the second set before the Russian pulled ahead once more, taking a lead that proved decisive and breaking again to seal the win. Having denied fans a rematch of the 2021 U.S. Open final between Raducanu and Fernandez, Kalinskaya will now aim to capture her first WTA 500 title in Sunday's final. "It was an interesting match. It's nice to play against Emma," world number 48 Kalinskaya said. "I'm proud of myself. I stayed aggressive and stuck to my plan." Fernandez "is such a fighter, she plays incredibly and never gives up. I played a tough battle against her a while ago. Tomorrow, I think it's going to be the same, and I'm excited". Earlier, Fernandez came from a set down to defeat third seed Elena Rybakina 6–7(2) 7–6(3) 7–6(3) in a marathon battle marked by dominant serving from both players. Rybakina edged a tight first set, gaining the upper hand in the tiebreak with two clutch return winners. Fernandez dropped her serve in the opening game of the second set, but Rybakina was unable to serve out the match at 5–4, allowing the Canadian to rally and level the contest by taking the second tiebreak. As in the opener, neither player dropped serve in the third set, but Fernandez grew in confidence and secured victory in three hours and 12 minutes to reach her first final of the season. On the men's side, Frenchman Corentin Moutet will face Australian Alex de Minaur in the first semifinal of the ATP 500 tournament, followed by home favourite Ben Shelton taking on Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
