Joanna Lumley barely recognisable as she plays grandma in Netflix hit Wednesday

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Jenna Ortega fronts the second season of Wednesday on Netflix. It's creepier, kookier and more mysterious than ever - it even features national treasure Joanna Lumley.
The plot thickens in Wednesday's second season as the hit Netflix dives deep into the Addams family dynamics - Joanna Lumley has even joined the cast as a member of the comically macabre clan.

At 22 years old, You and Wednesday star Jenna Ortega is already stepping behind the camera after being mentored by legendary director Tim Burton.

The actress is a producer on the eagerly awaited second series of Wednesday, which sees follows the Addams family star's adventures at school and features a star-studded cast.

Catherine Zeta-Jones returns as Wednesday's glamorous mother Morticia and Luis Guzmán is back as her father Gomez, while Steve Buscemi is joining as Nevermore Academy head Principle Barry Dort and Dame Joanna Lumley joins as Grandmama Hester Frump. Thandiwe Newton stars as psychiatrist Dr Rachael Fairburn and former pop star Billie Piper will play head of music Isadora Capri.
'It's been a really amazing experience being a producer,' Jenna says. 'It's been so cool being a part of conversations, talking about the color of blood, or the color of prosthetics and if the brain isn't big enough. Things that are quite silly, but really do make a big difference on the show.'

Fresh from Jenna and director Tim's collaboration on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim is back to direct episodes and is full of praise for the star: 'There was no question about it. That's who the character is, and she brings so much to it,' Tim says. 'She's a real equal part of and partner in this process. She's smart, she's easy and fun to work with, and she knows her character.'
The feeling is mutual. 'He's one of the funniest people I know and probably my favourite directors I've ever worked with, so it's nice to have gotten into such a routine,' Jenna says. 'We've got quite comfortable, especially after Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.'
On screen though, things are far from easygoing and season two kicks off with a bang. 'This season we start off with Wednesday being kidnapped,' Jenna says, 'I don't think I'm going to explain too much more than that.'

Filming for Wednesday has now moved from Romania to Ireland, which Jenna discovered for the first time. But big changes are happening inside Nevermore Academy, too.
Following the death of Principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie), the school welcomes a new headmaster, Principal Dort. 'I worked with Steve Buscemi many, many years ago, and I always wanted to again,' says Tim. 'It was such a pleasure to work with him on this because he brought something different.'
Dort is no carbon copy of Weems. 'Weems was very much about trying to fit into things,' Tim says, 'Every new principal brings in their own agenda. They bring in their own kind of 'Nevermore forever' attitude.'

Among the new faces at Nevermore is a familiar one: Wednesday's younger brother, Pugsley. Played by Isaac Ordonez, Pugsley becomes fascinated by the tale of the Skull Tree.
'It's about a Nevermore legend, one of Nevermore's greatest minds,' Isaac explains, 'He created amazing inventions, including his own clockwork heart. But the longer he had his clockwork heart, the darker he became.

Eventually, one of his inventions malfunctioned and it led to his death.' Naturally, Pugsley takes things a step further: 'My character hears this story and is inspired to go dig him up, revive him, and try to be friends with him.'
The Addams family drama doesn't stop there. Wednesday's mother Morticia gets a job at Nevermore, much to her daughter's dismay. 'Morticia being more associated with Nevermore is not something that Wednesday anticipated,' Catherine says. 'The family being more associated with Nevermore is a little bit of a thorn in Wednesday's side.'
Despite the on-screen tension, Jenna only has admiration for her co-star. 'She's so easy to work with,' Jenna says. 'I feel really lucky to have experienced this mother-daughter dynamic with someone as incredible as Catherine.'

Speaking of mothers - there's more upheaval ahead with Hester Frump, Morticia's mother, making her own arrival in the series. 'As we all know, at Christmastime when you bring the family together, that's when the nightmare begins,' Tim says. 'That was fun to play with, and having Joanna Lumley as Morticia's mother just made it extra special.'
Jenna adds: 'She is just the sweetest. Every time I saw her on set, and she called me 'honey' or 'darling' or 'baby,' I just melted. She's got the sweetest voice and she's hilarious.'

Off-screen, Jenna is still navigating the pressures that come with the role. She's previously opened up about living with OCD and anxiety - and leading a beloved series at just 18 wasn't without challenges.
'When we started the show, I was 18 and had never worked with a director as big as Tim. I had led a show before, but not with a character that was so well known and loved prior to me joining,' she says.
'It's a relief, but I would be lying if I didn't say that I still don't feel super anxious or feel like I have something I need to live up to every day on set. Maybe that's a good thing, but it hasn't gotten easier.'
But while Jenna treads gently, Wednesday strides. 'She's gotten a little bit more comfortable,' Jenna says. 'She's learned to take things maybe slightly less seriously - or be a bit more playful.'

Rebecca Loos faces brutal Beckham grilling on Celebrity SAS as she faces 'mistakes'

Rebecca Loos, one of the famous faces braving this year's Celebrity SAS opens up about 'that' David Beckham scandal and how being branded a 'liar' has forced her to develop a thick skin Rebecca Loos faces a grilling on Celebrity SAS about her affair with David Beckham - and she dubbed him a 'coward' for the way he brushed what happened under the carpet on his Netflix documentary. ‌ Loos was Beckham's personal assistant in 2003 and claims broke the following year about them having a four month fling. Beckham said reports of the affair were 'ludicrous' at the time but never mounted a legal challenge to the story or any subsequent interviews. Loos went on to appear on reality shows like The Farm and Celebrity Love Island before stepping out of the limelight and is now a yoga teacher in Norway. ‌ ‌ On her TV comeback on Channel 4 this week, Rebecca said: 'I just wanted to show people who I am and just be myself, which has always been my thing. And I just went in it with a very open mind and take it as it comes. 'I was quite nervous as to how the others would perceive me. I was nervous and apprehensive as to how the show would be edited, because that's always something you have no control of. However, I must say the production team on this show have been absolutely amazing from day one, they have been truthful, they have stuck to their word. 'It felt unjust that my life was pretty hell and his(Becks) life kept going and kept blossoming. I've been accused of being a liar. I've had a lifetime of opinions around me, I've definitely developed thick skin. I think the public opinion now has softened, at least from what I'm gathering since the documentary came out with the Beckhams a couple of years ago. I think it is now because thanks to social media, there is a whole different following out there, which it's a double-edged sword. ‌ "You've got the online trolls but I don't think that many people, at least the younger generation, know me that well. I've never really been very interested in what people think of me to be honest. It doesn't bother me. I don't think about it. I don't know what the perception is of me. I don't really care. I'm just myself, and some like it and some don't. And that's just how life is.' Like all the recruits, Rebecca faced a grilling in the show's Mirror Room. Jason Fox and Chris Oliver questioned her motives for being on the show before asking how she felt about her affair with Beckham now she's had the time to reflect on it. ‌ On his Netflix 2023 doc Beckham didn't name Rebecca and failed to take any accountability. He just said: 'I don't know how we got through it in all honesty,' on a tricky time when he lived in Madrid. On being asked about Beckham on the Channel 4 show and what she feels about how things have played out, she added: 'I was quite guarded at the beginning. I was trying to be guarded because it's not something I want to talk about the whole time. But at the same time I also wanted to be honest with them, so they were really good at getting through to me. "They're obviously professionals at this. I don't shy away from what I've been through, and I don't shy away from the decisions that I've made. They have shaped me into who I am, and I've really learnt a lot from the mistakes that I've made in my life and the things that I've done. And I really do think that being truthful is the only way to go in life. I'll stand by that forever. ‌ "It takes a lot of courage to tell the truth and to own up to mistakes that you have made, mistakes and times in your life you're not proud of. And it's very easy to just brush them under the carpet and move on. That's like the coward's way, I think, of living.' Asked if the SAS experience changes her, she said: "I very much like how they instil in you that even though you want to give up, you don't. And it's easier to take the easy way out, but you've got to fight and push through, and push hard. They gave me a bit of SAS grit. They really inspired me. When I came out of the show, I had made some changes in my life, which I think is definitely thanks to SAS. ‌ 'I quit alcohol. That was the first thing I did. I wasn't a big drinker, but I was a social drinker and I noticed that it wasn't good for me and my hormones and what I was going through, and it was having quite a negative effect on me, mentally. So I just decided to cut that out and I started lifting heavy weights. I wanted to get strong. I know it's really good for my bones, it's very good for women. "I was in perimenopause last year. And I've also started taking HRT. I've just started doing things to make sure that I live a healthy and strong life, that I age feeling strong, that I'm able to put a weight on my back and run up a mountain if I have to. So yeah, it was a bit of a kick in the arse to test myself a little bit again. I think in the years prior to SAS, I went through a lot as a mother as well because I had a youngest son who was struggling a lot.' Surviving on the SAS course has made Rebecca come to terms with aging and accepting that now she's a mother she's more risk averse: 'I used to be a risk-taker when I was younger, an absolute risk-taker. I used to love it. I used to thrive on it. Whereas now, no way. Motherhood has softened me. Aging, growing, maturing, we change. I won't speak for all the women, but at least I have become slightly softer, more careful. ‌ "And that's probably due to the fact that I hardly have any hormones left in my body. I'm in a different phase. It was a bit of a wake-up call to that. But realising and accepting that is very empowering and it's very positive and it's not a negative thing at all. I like being very aware of what I'm going through and who I am.' Rebecca's life today is a far cry from the media frenzy that exploded around her during the Beckham scandal in 2004. Now living a quiet, picture-perfect life for the last 14 years in Norway with her husband of 13 years, Norwegian doctor Sven Christjar Skaiaa, who she met whilst filming the reality programme, 71 Graden Noord, she is also mother to two sons, Magnus, 16, and Liam,13. ‌ The family is based in the remote area of Buskerud county, which is a three-hour trip to the nearest airport. Working as a yoga teacher and massage therapist, she revealed previously that she quit the UK for a "very different" life, to raise her "little Vikings", She has said of her life in Norway. 'It's not like England here, it's much less judgmental. I used to get people coming up to me in Waitrose, right in my face, taking pictures of me with their mobiles' Rebecca has also revealed how open she is with her sons about her past, including the attention thrust upon her over her alleged affair with Beckham, something he has always denied. ‌ She said in 2023: 'They know. And so I said - and I feel that it's very unfair because of the way I'm being treated now and the bullying I'm getting and the trolling. And I want to say something. And I'm going to do an interview, so there might be some media and how do you feel about that. 'And so my youngest son said, oh, good. He's a bit like me. He's like, good for you, Mummy. Yes, I would say something to him. And my eldest son, he said, well, I don't really know anything about Beckham. It's not like it's Messi, Mummy. I mean, had it been Messi…'

WWE fans set for final glimpse into Hulk Hogan's life as Netflix revelation emerges after legend's death

Wrestling fans may be gifted one last glimpse of Hulk Hogan after his sudden death this week. The WWE icon died at the age of 71 on Thursday after suffering fatal cardiac arrest at his home in Clearwater, Florida. And as the tributes have flooded in from the sporting world and even President Donald Trump over the past few days, it has now emerged that a documentary on the wrestling legend had been in the works before his death. Hogan - whose real name is Terry Bollea - was reportedly working with the streaming giant on the unannounced project, which was set to chronicle his controversial life in and out of the ring, according to CNN. The late wrestler is said to have given more than 20 hours of interviews for the documentary, which has been in the works since 2024. A source confirmed to CNN that the project was going ahead with Hogan's full participation. 'People will see a side of him they haven't seen before,' the insider told the outlet. Despite his passing, filming is still going ahead with Netflix earmarking the documentary for release. A date has not yet been confirmed. The Netflix documentary is directed by Bryan Storkel and will be produced by Connor Schell's studio, Words + Pictures, in collaboration with the WWE. An additional 30 hours of scenes have also already been shot, while additional filming is still underway. Cameras were said to be rolling during WWE's Friday Night Smackdown on July 25, which opened with a tribute to Hogan. And in the first live event after his death, the WWE remembered Hogan in a poignant memorial before kicking off SmackDown on Friday night. Wrestling great Triple H, who now works as the company's chief content officer, paid homage to his former colleague before a traditional 10-bell salute was held in his memory. 'Ladies and gentleman, yesterday we lost one of the biggest and most globally recognized icons in the world,' said Triple H, whose real name is Paul Levesque. 'A man I grew up watching, was fortunate enough to share the ring with, and like so many of us were honored to call a friend. 'The truth is, he captivated millions of people and inspired them around the globe. We would not be standing here right now - all of us together - if it was not for him. 'So please help us honor him now as we give a 10-bell salute to Terry Bollea - the one and the only, the immortal Hulk Hogan.' A number of WWE figures looked visibly emotional as the 10-bell salute played out, including his former manager Jimmy Hart, who was seen wiping away tears. The likes of Randy Orton, Logan Paul, Charlotte Flair and Cody Rhodes were also seen paying their respects to Hogan on the stage. SmackDown then ran a heartwarming montage of Hogan's greatest WWE moments, which featured some touching words from a number of his fellow wrestlers. Hogan endured his fair share of battles inside and outside of the ring, especially towards the end of his life. Throughout his final months, Hogan battled through the emotional toll of a bitter family feud with ex-wife Linda and his daughter Brooke. In an astonishing video on social media shared back in March, Linda first accused her former husband of being a 'complete liar' and 'sex addict' . She also claimed their family is 'in the worst mess' after Brooke cut both parents out of her life, before hitting back at her mom by alleging that her dad was not the only reason behind the shocking family divide, claiming she was 'verbally and mentally abused' during her childhood. 'Sadly, it would frequently turn physical. And sometimes it's not by the person you would assume, abuse comes in all shapes and sizes,' Brooke alleged. After Brooke's stunning response, Linda then took a dramatic U-turn by defending Hogan and branding her daughter a 'narcissist.' Hogan is survived by his wife Sky Daily, his two children, Brooke, 36, and Nick, 34, whom he shared with his first wife Linda Hogan, as well as two grandchildren. Sky was Hogan's third wife, marrying the former wrestler in 2023 following his divorces from ex-wives Linda and Jennifer McDaniel in 2009 and 2021 respectively. The wrestling icon's shock death also came just weeks after Sky denied rumors he was on his deathbed in a coma - and claimed his heart was 'strong' after he underwent a routine neck surgery. His representative said in a statement last month: 'He's had problems with his back for years but there's no emergency.' A source also revealed to last month that Hogan was trying to work his way back to '100 percent' after neck and back operations. 'Hulk has a body ravaged by wrestling, his body is the body of a 140-year-old man with all the bumps and bruises through the years, and his recent neck and back surgeries have been harder to come back from,' a source close to Hogan said.
