Big Lots bankruptcy was expected to be the end
In December 2024, Big Lots announced that it had filed for bankruptcy and would be closing all of its roughly 800 locations. But in a surprising turn of events, the chain was saved from completely going out of business after another discount retail chain operator, Variety Wholesalers, swept in and agreed to buy 219 Big Lots locations from liquidator Gordon Brothers.
Variety Wholsalers, which also owns discount retail chains including Bargain Town and Super Dollar, said it would not only keep the 219 stores alive, but that it would operate them under the Big Lots brand, after a period of renovation and re-merchandising.
Prior Big Lots reopenings
Variety Wholesalers said it would reopen the 219 Big Lots stores it acquired in four waves, with the first beginning in April. Here's how many stores Big Lots opened in each prior wave:
Now, Big Lots will be commencing its fourth wave of store openings.
78 Big Lots 'fourth wave' June reopenings
Big Lots' fourth wave of store reopenings will happen this week, with 78 stores opening across nine states. The planned opening date is Thursday, June 5.
The states with the most store reopenings in the fourth wave include North Carolina, with 22 locations reopening; Ohio, with 13 locations reopening; and Pennsylvania, with 11 stores reopening.

No more Big Lots openings?
With the additional 78 Big Lots stores reopening in its fourth wave this week, Variety Wholesalers will have reopened all 219 stores that it said it would after acquiring them from Gordon Brothers.
While fans of the retail brand are undoubtedly happy to have hundreds of locations reopened, the 219-store count represents just over a quarter of the Big Lots locations that were open at the end of last year.
Privately held Variety Wholesalers has not publicly announced plans to open any brand-new Big Lots locations at this time. For now, if there isn't a Big Lots location near you after the fourth wave of reopenings this week, it's likely to stay that way for the foreseeable future.

Spirit Halloween typically opens its doors in August, though in past years it has opened as early as July. In 2024, the retailer held a special grand opening celebration at its flagship store in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, on Aug. 1. According to USA TODAY, the flagship store opened on July 29 in 2023, with other locations following in the weeks after. A 2022 news release from the company stated that its grand opening event was held on July 30. In 2021, the company's grand opening event took place on July 31. With the recent drop of the 2025 season teaser, it's safe to assume stores will be opening sometime in August. With offshore dayrates back to ~$500k and no new drillships expected before 2028 due to a decimated supply pipeline, the setup for existing players is highly favorable. Offshore drilling is resurging as shale output flattens, and major oil companies are ramping up long-cycle projects in Brazil, Guyana, and the Gulf of Mexico, where offshore production costs now rival or beat shale at $30–$50 per barrel. Valaris is positioned to capture this demand surge with an industry-leading fleet and a cleaned-up balance sheet—net debt is just $800 million against a $4.1 billion backlog. If dayrates return to prior peaks of $700k+, annual free cash flow could exceed $2 billion, against a current EV of only $3.9 billion. Activist investor Mohnish Pabrai took a material stake in Q1 2025, likely attracted by the company's asset backing, earnings torque, and capital discipline. Near-term catalysts include easing FPSO bottlenecks, tightening rig availability, and potential short squeezes with 14% of shares sold short. Risks remain—oil below $55, safety incidents, or future overbuilding—but current valuations offer a compelling margin of safety. With tight supply and disciplined capital allocation, Valaris could plausibly triple from here. Previously we covered a bullish thesis on Valaris Limited by Alpha Ark in February 2025, which highlighted the company's dominant fleet, improving balance sheet, and rising offshore dayrates. The company's stock has appreciated approximately 6% since our coverage as the offshore recovery gained traction. Fast-food chain franchisee closes, files Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Fast-food franchisees have battled economic challenges over the last three years, which have led certain chain operators to close restaurant locations and, in some cases, file for bankruptcy. Rising costs of operating driven by inflation, such as labor and food, are the top reason many franchisees have faced distress. Other common financial issues blamed for distress include fierce competition among dining chains and consumer reluctance to spend in uncertain times. Diaz has a history of fighting lawsuits and filing for bankruptcy on behalf of his companies' other fast-food restaurant franchises. EYM Pizza, which at one time operated 142 Pizza Hut locations in Texas, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the Eastern District of Texas on July 22, 2024. Another Diaz franchisee, EYM King, was ordered to close 26 Michigan Burger King locations in March 2023 after the Burger King Corp. terminated EYM's franchise agreement, according to Restaurant Business at the time. Burger King had filed a lawsuit against EYM King in February 2023 seeking payment of unpaid royalties, advertisement payments, and other charges.
