Tiruvannamalai mom's suicide over girl baby: Postmortem confirms foetus was male
TIRUVANNAMALAI: In a disturbing revelation, the postmortem report of Umadevi (25), a five-month pregnant woman who allegedly killed her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Meghanasree and ended her life at Karikalampadi village in Tiruvannamalai, confirmed that the foetus was male, contradicting an earlier illegal scan that had identified it as female. Her husband and in-laws had allegedly harassed her over the female foetus.
Health officials at the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College and Hospital on Friday confirmed the findings after the autopsy.
According to police sources, Umadevi and her husband had travelled to Tirupati on Monday to undergo an illegal scan to determine the sex of the foetus. The scan allegedly revealed the foetus to be female. Following this, her husband's family allegedly tried to coerce her into undergoing an abortion.
When Umadevi resisted, an altercation ensued during which she was allegedly assaulted. Hours later, both Umadevi and her daughter were found dead in a well near their home in Kilpennathur. Police had arrested four people, including Umadevi's husband and in-laws, on Wednesday under Sections 296 (b), 85 and 108 of the BNS, and Section 4 (b) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998.
Responding to queries on whether the postmortem confirmation would lead to changes in the charges, a senior police officer told TNIE, 'There is no need to alter the sections. Regardless of whether the foetus was male or female, sex determination itself is illegal. The offence remains the same under the law.'

The FIR was registered against the SHO after Siwach's wife furnished WhatsApp chats and audio recordings as evidence. The cop moved court, seeking protection from arrest. But additional sessions judge Manglesh Kumar Choubey, while denying bail, observed that while intimate relationships between consenting adults are protected under Article 21 of the Constitution, they become "immoral" when the parties are already married (the SHO is married, too). The court was also critical of an investigating officer getting into a relationship with an accused, describing it as "moral turpitude". The court insisted on the need for the SHO's custodial interrogation to investigate the money trail and prevent interference with witnesses. "This was not a one-time affair, it continued. This relationship was not confined to personal intimacy but encompassed within its ambit every possible attempt of interference in the working of the police force. Such acts and conduct are not expected from any public servant, but it was unbecoming of a police officer heading a police station. Her custodial interrogation is absolutely essential for proper investigation, to confront her with all the transactions on the records, to investigate the money trail, and to stop her from interfering with the investigation and influencing the complainant and witnesses," the judge ruled. Rural police use anti-drone guns to pull down illegally flown drones during palkhi processions
Pune: The Pune Rural police have deployed two anti-drone guns to take down unauthorised drones during the palkhi processions of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj. So far, police have shot down six drones operated by photographers without obtaining the necessary permissions. Confirming, superintendent of police, Pune Rural, Sandeep Singh Gill, said, "We will not tolerate this nuisance. Our teams are keeping an eye on the drones illegally flown during the processions. We are using anti-drone guns to pull them down." The police have registered six FIRs against the drone users and operators under Section 223 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of BNS with various police stations. "We have issued notices to these drone operators asking them to cooperate with the investigation," Gill said. Man marrying & harassing minor held under Pocso
Nashik: The Bhadrakali police arrested a man (25) on Friday evening for marrying a minor girl and harassing her. The arrest was made under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanahita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. The Bhadrakali police stated that the victim (17) registered a complaint with them on Friday evening. According to the complainant, her father-in-law threatened her parents to marry their minor daughter to his son. The father-in-law wielded immense influence in their community. After the forced marriage, the complainant's husband maintained physical relations with her, after which she became pregnant and gave birth to a boy on June 1. Meanwhile, the husband and his four other relatives continued to harass her physically. The police said, "After the girl returned to her parents, she decided to register a complaint against her husband and the other 4 relatives. We took action and arrested her husband. However, his parents and four other accused are yet to be traced and arrested." Apart from the charges under Pocso, the police have registered a case against the accused for rape, abduction, intentional insult, and criminal intimidation under relevant sections of the BNS. The police are also investigating where the girl delivered the baby and why doctors did not raise alarm over her age.
