Newport: Shops closed after vapes and tobacco seized

Operation Frost, led by Newport City Council's trading standards team, resulted in the seizure of more than 10,000 illegal vapes, 250,000 cigarettes and nearly 75kg of hand-rolling tobacco in the last six months.
A total of 27 closure orders have been granted by Newport magistrates, forcing shops to shut for a minimum of three months.
Councillor Mark Spencer, cabinet member for trading standards at Newport City Council, said: "Our officers are doing sterling work by disrupting the sale by criminals of these illegal, and potentially dangerous products and by providing assistance to retailers following the introduction of the law banning disposable vapes."
In May and June, GG Vape #2, 7b Westgate Buildings, 17 Church Street, City Vape at 58 Commercial Street, and Yum Yum at 60 Commercial Street were all closed by the courts.
Mood Vape at 424 Chepstow Road and Chepstow Mini Market at 145 Chepstow Road were closed for the second time this year having previously been subject to closure orders in February.
All the premises were found to be selling illegal tobacco or vapes.
Newport has also acted as a collection point for illegal vapes seized by other trading standards teams in South Wales, with more than 16,000 disposed of in May.
Since June 1, single-use vapes have been banned across the UK due to environmental concerns.
Trading standards officers have visited more than 80 retailers in Newport to offer guidance on the new regulations.

Portadown: Newspaper print site closure a severe blow, Unite says

The planned closure of a print site in County Armagh will deal a "severe blow to Northern Ireland's newspaper print capacity", a trade union has Associated Print site at Carn Industrial Estate in Portadown, which is operated by DMG Media, is set to close this Graham, Unite's regional secretary, said it "is totally unacceptable that a viable business and its workers face being thrown on the scrapheap"."This can and should be a fundamentally viable business," she said. The union says the closure would occur alongside the proposed shutdown of a printing plant in Cork and "further the centralisation of newspaper production to Britain".It said it is engaging with members on the next steps to try to keep the Portadown printworks a statement, DMG Media said: "After extensive review, we are proposing to consolidate our Irish print operations."This proposed change would unfortunately result in the closure of our print site in Carn in autumn 2025."We are absolutely committed to helping everyone who is affected and supporting them through the process." However, Unite regional officer Neil Moore said: "If Associated Print pushes ahead with closing this site, it will leave just one newspaper printworks operating in Northern Ireland. "That's not just a blow to jobs, it's a strategic risk to the print industry and a wider threat to skills."If the company won't invest in this workforce or this facility, it should be prepared to stand aside for someone who sees the long-term value in this facility. "We are pursuing every available option and will not allow these workers to be discarded without a fight."

Popular garage for sale after shock closure – as major firm desperately tries to balance the books

A POPULAR garage has been listed for sale after its shock closure earlier this year - as a major firm desperately attempts to balance the books. ATS Euromaster ran the mechanic shop in Blackburn, but the company was forced to reduce its network of garages from 238 to 152 - as well as lay off staff. 2 2 Back in February, it was revealed that ATS Euromaster - a well established tyre service - had earmarked 86 service centres for possible closure. Just weeks later, all 86 service centres ceased trading and 248 employees were made redundant. The business, which was founded in 1965 and is owned by Michelin, claimed overcapacity, increased costs and sluggish growth as reasons for the closures. One of those 86 centres was the garage in Blackburn, based in Pendle Street. According to the Lancashire Telegraph, the garage has been listed for sale at a guide price of £700,000. The listing said: 'The property comprises a detached steel-framed industrial unit, configured as a seven-bay fitting workshop with ancillary storage, reception, office, staff and customer WCs with tyre storage above the offices. 'Externally, the unit has 12 marked car parking spaces with an additional two disabled spaces. 'The property is located on Pendle Street, which has visibility from Copy Nook (A678), which runs parallel and leads towards Blackburn town centre in the west and east towards J6 of the M65, one mile to the east. 'The site is in a mixed commercial/residential area approximately one mile east of Blackburn town centre.' Other sites in East Lancashire, located in Accrington and Burnley, remain open. Iconic 80s hatchback left to gather dust in a garage for two decades is uncovered... and is worth a lucrative sum ATS Euromaster's latest accounts for the year until December 2023 reported losses of £13.9 million, compared to a loss of £20.6 million in 2022. But their overall turnover for 2023 sat at £165.5million compared to £147.1million in 2022. Back in March, Sun Motors revealed outlets across the country were shutting their doors for good, with confirmed closures in Devon and Cornwall at centres in Plymouth, Exeter and Newton Abbot. Other closures across the UK have also been reported in Brecon, Macclesfield and Carlisle, as well as in Horsham, Worthing, Crawley, Poole and Lymington. What's more, Google lists retailers in Dartford and Bexleyheath as permanently closed, too. In a statement to Sun Motors at the time, a spokesperson for ATS said: "In a UK automotive aftermarket context of overcapacity, increasing costs and sluggish activity and growth, ATS Euromaster intends to review its current operating model and has put in place a proposal to close some non profitable service centres. "Employees impacted by this proposal are under consultation. "In the meantime, our priority is to provide them with the best level of support as possible. "This decision will not impact the high quality of services that we offer to our customers. "We intend that it enables us to concentrate our efforts on strategic levels for sustainable development, including services around ATS mobile capabilities and the shaping of a franchise model already successfully developed in several countries."

Posh commuter belt pub chain falls into administration and shuts six sites

Pub and hotel chain Oakman Inns has fallen into administration and six sites have been closed. The Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire–based chain, which largely operates in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and the Midlands, struggled to recover from enforced closures and restricted trading during the Covid pandemic. The firm's closure has also been put down to rising energy and food costs, as well as a reduction in customer spending. The upmarket Oakman Inns chain was founded by Peter Borg–Neal in 2007. The chain's development arm, Oakman Dev has also entered administration. As a result of the insolvency, six sites have been closed permanently, with 159 staff losing their jobs in the process. However, 13 of the chain's leasehold locations and one freehold property were sold to Uphams Inns, with 531 jobs set to be transferred along with the sites to the new owner. Kevin Todd, executive chairman of Upham Inns, said: 'We have been long term admirers of the Oakman Inns pub estate and the quality of their team and their offer… 'We look forward to welcoming the new team into our family and working together to create an exciting premium pub group, now with 30 fabulous locations.' PwC, appointed as its administrators, said no acceptable offers were received for the sale of the whole business, despite 'an open and comprehensive marketing process,' and it was deemed that a part sale was the best way to maximise returns for creditors. In May, Wagamama owner The Restaurant Group, was in talks to buy a chunk of the Oakman Inns' portfolio of some 30 sites. Ross Connock, joint administrator at PwC, said: 'It's regrettable that six trading sites were not included in the sale, resulting in 159 redundancies. Our team of employee specialists are providing support to those affected during this challenging time. 'The hospitality sector continues to face significant and persistent challenges, including a reduction in customer numbers, which has been driven by changing consumer habits and broader economic pressures.' 'In addition, operators are contending with rising operating costs, such as increased energy prices, higher food and beverage costs, and wage inflation.' Brewdog announced earlier this week that it would close 10 locations, including its flagship bar in Aberdeen, putting around 100 jobs at risk. The bars will close on 26 July. The six Oakman sites that have closed are: • Grand Junction Arms, Tring, Hertfordshire • Beech House, Watford, Hertfordshire • Journeyman, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire • King's Head, Chipping Ongar, Essex • Navigation Inn, Lapworth, Warwickshire • The George Inn, Ludlow, Shropshire Meanwhile, Upham Inns will take over these 14 locations: • The Penny Farthing, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire • The Beech House, St Albans, Hertfordshire • The Betsey Wynne, Swanbourne, Buckinghamshire • The Three Locks, Stoke Hammond, Buckinghamshire • The Red Lion, Water End, Hertfordshire • The Beech House, Solihull, West Midlands • The Beech House, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire • The Beech House, Amersham, Buckinghamshire • The Lost Boy, Farnham, Hampshire • The Kings Arms, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire • The Woburn, Woburn, Bedfordshire • The Old Post Office, Wallingford, Oxfordshire • The Four Alls, Welford on Avon, Warwickshire • The Navigation Inn, Cosgrove, Northamptonshire
