Uthando House is a facility at the forefront of providing care, support and safe spaces for vulnerable children.
This orphanage advocates for National Child Protection Week, commemorated annually from May 29 to June 5, to raise awareness of children's rights as articulated in the Children's Act 38 of 2005. This year's theme is 'Working together in ending violence against children'.
As the country comes together to raise awareness about child protection, the manager of Uthando House, Tracy Malope, said their efforts serve as a shining example of the impact that can be made when individuals and organisations work together to protect and care for vulnerable children.
The shelter houses 28 children, providing them with a nurturing environment and protection from harm. It is dedicated to ensuring the children's physical, emotional and psychological well-being.
Malope said she works closely with social workers and police officers to educate the children about their rights and protect them from abuse and exploitation.

'We do our utmost best to ensure that our children are safe by accompanying them to school and back. We mostly accept children brought in by the police or social workers,' she said.
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has urged caregivers and parents to actively monitor and guide their children's online activities and also keep them safe all the time.
The department shared some tips on how to protect children online, stating that children must be taught to safeguard personal information and avoid sharing private details, images or locations online.

Minister Gayton McKenzie insists Kenny Kunene was 'set up' in DJ Sumbody murder case link

Ex-convict turned politician Gayton McKenzie, the leader of the Patriotic Alliance, insists his former inmate and party deputy president Kenny Kunene was 'set up' after he was found at the home of DJ Sumbody's alleged killer. 'If there's a murder that happened and there are only two suspects, me and Kenny, I must be the main suspect. You know, Kenny could've had a gun, had a fly,' McKenzie said on the sidelines of the National Assembly in Cape Town on Wednesday afternoon. 'That guy has such a soft character. Let me tell you, the mistake with him - that's my fight with him always - is that he's too accessible. You call Kenny and ask, 'Where are you?' He says, 'I'm in the squatter camp; there's a party going on.' Next time, 'I'm in the suburbs meeting someone.' He's never at home. He's always busy, and he's accessible.' McKenzie, who also serves as Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture and met Kunene while the two were in prison years ago, strongly defended him, maintaining Kunene had no involvement and was likely 'set up.' 'But I can tell you, man, he doesn't believe it was a setup, but I do…He says to me, 'No, no, it wasn't a setup. It was pure coincidence.' I said to him, 'You were there during the time of the arrest.' I have no proof, but I can't say for a fact - I just have a gut feeling.' He said only a proper investigation can prove what really happened. 'People must also know we've worked very hard to rebuild our reputation coming from jail. We've worked very, very hard. We will never - and I'm speaking for Mr. Kunene - we will never risk that by associating with these guys, even if they did this thing,' McKenzie said. 'If they are guilty... I was just looking at this thing - one gun killing ten people.' 'These are images from the crime underworld. Why would we even mix with criminals? I know about crime. When I heard that one gun killed ten people, I already knew we were dealing with crime figures.' 'I want to congratulate the cops again - I'm glad they caught them, and you will not find me or Mr. Kunene in the company of such people. What happened was very unfortunate,' he added. McKenzie added that a law firm to investigate Kunene's involvement would be announced on Friday. On Tuesday, McKenzie also defended Kunene after he was found at the home of the alleged mastermind behind DJ Sumbody's murder, saying that 'he is innocent and has got nothing to hide.' Speaking in a Facebook Live session on Tuesday night, McKenzie said he had spoken to Kunene on Monday while he was in Namibia and was assured Kunene had done nothing wrong. 'He said, 'Yeah, I went there.' He was supposed to meet someone, and that person told him to meet at that house and sent a location pin. It was his first time at the house,' McKenzie said. He said Kunene told him he did not know the owner of the house, identified as Sandton businessman Katiso 'KT' Molefe, who was arrested on Monday in connection with the 2022 murder of DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka. 'When he got there, they were just sitting... He doesn't know Molefe,' McKenzie said. 'He knows the other guy who sent the location pin. The police came, told everyone to get on the floor. Kenny complied.' According to McKenzie, police asked Kunene if he knew Molefe. However, Kunene said he did not and explained someone else had sent the location. Police searched his phone and found no communication with Molefe, McKenzie said. 'They came back and said, 'Kenny, we're sorry. Here's your phone. You can leave,'' he added. IOL News previously reported that Kunene later confirmed that he was at Molefe's house at the time of the arrest. He said he was there with a young journalist from his media company to allow Molefe to respond to the murder allegations. McKenzie said he received several calls from journalists asking whether he believed Kunene's version of events. '100%, I do. I believe in him 100%. Let me tell you who Kenny Kunene is. People think Kenny is my friend. Kenny was my friend - he's now a brother to me.' McKenzie added that Kunene inspired him to turn his life around in prison. 'Kenny is the godfather of my children. I'm the godfather of his. I don't even hang out with Kenny... he's a socialite; I'm not. But I know Kenny, and I know he's not a violent person.' He also claimed that Kunene admired DJ Sumbody and other deejays. 'He loved DJ Sumbody. He had nothing to gain by being involved in such a thing. That's not him,' McKenzie said. 'I personally think he was set up. Kenny doesn't believe that, but I do. I can't prove it yet, but this thing smells like a setup.' McKenzie has since announced that he placed Kunene on a 30-day leave of absence from his role as MMC and from all party duties pending the outcome of the internal investigation. 'It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do - ask Kenny Kunene to step aside. But the party must always come first. No one is bigger than the party.' He said a team of independent lawyers would be appointed to probe Kunene's presence at Molefe's home, with findings expected within 30 days. 'This is a serious allegation. Even though I believe he's innocent, the matter must be thoroughly investigated,' McKenzie said. Kunene's visit came just as there was a major breakthrough in the DJ Sumbody murder case. On Tuesday, the Alexandra Magistrate's Court granted the state a seven-day postponement in the case involving four men charged in the November 2022 triple murder. The accused, Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, Musa Kekana, and Molefe, face charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the deaths of DJ Sumbody and his bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza. Prosecutors said the postponement was necessary to investigate new leads following the suspects' arrests across Gauteng earlier this week. [email protected] IOL Politics

‘Get your popcorn factory ready' — McKenzie on commission investigating Mkhwanazi allegations

McKenzie says he knows things the commission may find useful. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie says he will testify at the commission set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. On Sunday, 6 July, Mkhwanazi alleged that the judiciary and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, among others, were corrupt and colluding with criminal networks. Mkhwanazi said an investigation with the Gauteng organised crime investigation unit unmasked a syndicate which involves politicians, law enforcement, metro police, correctional services, prosecutors, the judiciary, and is controlled by drug cartels as well as businesspeople. To address these allegations and their implications, Ramaphosa announced on Sunday that he would establish a judicial commission of inquiry, chaired by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga. Justice Madlanga will be assisted by Advocate Sesi Baloyi SC and Advocate Sandile Khumalo SC. The commission will investigate allegations relating to the infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and associated institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates. Among the allegations that the commission may investigate are the facilitation of organised crime, suppression or manipulation of investigations, inducement into criminal actions by law enforcement leadership, commission of any other criminal offences, and intimidation, victimisation, or targeted removal of whistleblowers or officials resisting criminal influence. ALSO READ: Charges laid against Mchunu as pressure mounts on Ramaphosa to act amid national security concerns The commission will further investigate the role of current or former senior officials in certain institutions who may have aided or abetted the alleged criminal activity; failed to act on credible intelligence or internal warnings; or benefited financially or politically from a syndicate's operations. McKenzie: Get your popcorn ready Speaking to Newzroom Africa on Tuesday, McKenzie said South Africans should get their popcorn ready and expect to hear explosive revelations at the commission. He said the commission was a good move and would be able to investigate and expose the truth. He said he, too, would testify at the commission as he knew things. It's just that people must understand, it's frustrating when you want action right now, and you want things to happen,' McKenzie told the news channel. 'But this thing is so delicate that I'm telling you, what is going to come out of that… [whistles]. South Africans must be ready. I'm also going to testify at the commission because I know things. If they call me, I'm going. 'There are guns in the Western Cape that kill our people. This one is not 'get your popcorn ready', you must get your popcorn factory ready because this thing, the corruption that's going to come out of there … every gang boss of every cartel in the world, always you hear they're being arrested in South Africa. They are here. What are these people doing here?' READ NEXT: Political killings task team 'nothing more than a terror group', millions spent on it 'disgraceful'

CoJ responds to concerns over women begging with children at traffic lights

City of Johannesburg social services says it is aware of the growing number of women begging with their children at various intersections in the city. This is after a Fourways resident Corinna Botoulas raised a heartfelt concern about the mothers begging with children at traffic lights, particularly at the Witkoppen off-ramp to Winnie Mandela Drive. Botoulas, who witnessed the aftermath of a traumatic hit-and-run accident, said she was deeply disturbed every time she saw a mother and child sitting vulnerably in the path of fast-moving traffic and questioned Where the city departments, or social service agencies, where. Also read: Resident pleads for help for mothers and children begging at Fourways intersections Ayanda Radebe, the city's spokesperson, said this is a city-wide challenge. She said the Department of Social Development has profiled the women at the intersections as part of its ongoing efforts to address this matter. 'We realise that this requires a multi-pronged approach that will include the Provincial Department of Social Development, JMPD, and Chapter 9 institutions. The matter is also discussed on various city platforms, as well as provincial platforms, and support is being provided through various stakeholders. 'The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) Social Development Department has a database which is used to monitor movements of the women begging with children at intersections, as they constantly change spots and regions. Especially after the department reaches out to them to assess their needs, and to make them aware of the implications of using children as begging bait, in terms of the Children's Act 38 of 2005.' When asked if this constitutes child endangerment, under South African law, and what steps can, or should, be taken in such cases, Radebe said: 'Yes, it does, in terms of Section 150 of the Children's Act 38 of 2005. Additionally, it covers children who are victims of child labour, or those living in child-headed households. 'In this case, the children work on the streets, which can be classified as victims of exploitation and child labour, because they are being used as begging bait. These children are, as a result, denied their right to education, their right to play as children, and their right to a safe environment, which is responsive to their needs. As a result, the concerned children are in need of care and protection.'
