Liverpool now expected to rival Newcastle for Hugo Ekitike
Fabrizio Romano reported earlier today that Liverpool would turn their attention to the Newcastle target if they were unsuccessful in their bid to sign Isak – as Sky Sports confirm this is now indeed the case. The Athletic reported yesterday that Newcastle were in talks over a €75m potential deal for Ekitike, following interest from Manchester United and Chelsea during this window.

After a failed stint with Paris Saint-Germain, Ekitike has reinvented himself in the Bundesliga with 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 matches during the 2024-2025 season. The Frenchman started his career with Reims, where he scored 11 goals in 26 games during his breakout season with Les Champenois before his move to PSG.

Sunderland hold interest in signing Leverkusen's Granit Xhaka
Sunderland hold an interest in signing Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen. The 32-year-old former Arsenal midfielder has played a key role for Leverkusen across his two seasons at the Bundesliga side, making 99 appearances and helping the club to the first Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal in 2023-24. Advertisement Xhaka's Leverkusen contract runs through to 2028 and he is also the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia. The Switzerland captain previously spent seven years at Arsenal, where he made 297 appearances and won the FA Cup in 2016-17 and 2019-20 Newly-promoted Sunderland have been active in the transfer market this summer and have already signed six players, including making midfielder Enzo Le Fee's loan move permanent. The newly-promoted club have also signed central midfielder Habib Diarra, wingers Simon Adringra and Chemsdine Talbi, full-back Reinildo and the versatile Noah Sadiki. Diarra and Sadiki will give Sunderland depth in central midfield positions but they are also keen to add Xhaka following the sale of Jobe Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer. Xhaka would become the latest high profile exit from Leverkusen this summer, after Florian Wirtz joined Liverpool in a club record €136.3million (£116m) transfer, while Jeremie Frimpong also departed for Anfield after the Premier League champions activated his €35million (£29.6m;$39.3m) release clause. Erik ten Hag was appointed Leverkusen's new head coach earlier this summer, succeeding Xabi Alonso following the Spaniard's move to Real Madrid. ()

Liverpool in advanced talks to appoint Manchester United academy coach Simon Wiles as under-18s coach
Liverpool are in advanced talks to appoint highly-rated Manchester United academy coach Simon Wiles as their new under-18s head coach. The former Blackpool midfielder is set to replace Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, who left Liverpool after 10 years of service at the end of last season. Preston-born Wiles only joined United's academy last September as lead coach for the under-14s following two and a half years as first-team coach at Salford City. Advertisement Prior to that he spent six years at Fleetwood Town where he worked his way up from youth development coach to first-team coach. At both Salford and Fleetwood he had short spells as interim head coach. The 40-year-old's playing career included spells at Blackpool, Macclesfield Town, Dunfermline Athletic and Barrow before it was cut short by injury. Wiles becomes the latest United academy coach to progress and leave for a raised position, after Justin Cochrane, Paul McShane, Tom Huddlestone, Neil Wood, Neil Ryan, and Neil Gittins among others. The plan is that Wiles will work alongside long-serving Liverpool academy coach Anthony Ryan, who has been promoted from his role with the under-15s to become under-18s assistant coach. Ryan is currently in charge of team affairs and oversaw last weekend's opening friendly win over Welsh outfit Connah's Quay Nomads. It's been a summer of significant changes for Liverpool's academy following the departures of Bridge-Wilkinson and under-21s boss Barry Lewtas. Bridge-Wilkinson has subsequently been appointed assistant manager at League One club Huddersfield Town. Liverpool brought in former Wales boss Rob Page as Lewtas' successor. It's Page's first role since he was sacked by Wales last June after four years in charge of the national team which saw him lead them to both the Euros and the World Cup. ()

Liverpool make contact with Eintracht Frankfurt over Hugo Ekitike
Liverpool have made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt over a possible move for Hugo Ekitike, who is also being targeted by Newcastle United. The Athletic reported on July 14 that Newcastle tried to secure Ekitike via an offer worth around €75million (£64.9m; $86.9m), which was turned down by Frankfurt. Advertisement They have now received an approach from Liverpool, too, as the Premier League champions work to bolster their attack with a new striker. It comes amid Liverpool's pursuit of Newcastle forward Alexander Isak. The Anfield club have communicated their interest about doing a deal in the region of £120m for the 25-year-old Sweden international. Newcastle are trying to land Ekitike this summer for a third time — following failed attempts in January and the summer of 2022. Sensitivities around Liverpool remain understandably high following the tragic death of Diogo Jota earlier this month, but there is an awareness they need to make further additions this summer. The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Liverpool's focus when it comes to incomings is on finding a top No 9 as they seek to strengthen their forward line. They are open to offers for Darwin Nunez, while winger Luiz Diaz has informed the club of his desire to leave. Though Liverpool have approached Newcastle over Isak, the St James' Park club's stance is that the Swede is not for sale. Ekitike scored 22 goals and notched 12 assists in all competitions for Frankfurt last season after signing for the Bundesliga club permanently in a deal worth €17.5m in the summer of 2024, following a loan spell from PSG in the previous 15 goals saw him tied with former team-mate Omar Marmoush, now of Manchester City, in the Bundesliga goalscoring charts for the 2024-25 season. Ekitike helped Frankfurt to a third-place finish in the Bundesliga, securing Champions League football for just the second time in the club's history, the first time qualifying for the competition via league placing. The Athletic reported in June that Manchester United also enquired about the availability of Ekitike this summer, while Chelsea were interested before signing Liam Delap from Ipswich Town and Joao Pedro from Brighton & Hove Albion. Additional reporting: David Ornstein and Chris Waugh Analysis by Liverpool correspondent Andy Jones Isak has been Liverpool supporters' ideal No 9 target all summer, but Newcastle's 'not for sale' stance has made them look elsewhere too — and Ekitike looks like their preferred alternative. The need to strengthen the No 9 position was highlighted heading into the summer with Nunez set to leave. Advertisement Slot tried a number of options in that role last season, with Luis Diaz becoming his preferred selection. It was a tricky position to play in though with plenty demanded and goals didn't flow for any of those who operated there. Liverpool will hope to change that and Ekitike showed his goalscoring credentials during an excellent season at Frankfurt where he scored 22 goals in all competitions and provided 12 assists across 48 appearances. Aged 23, he is exactly the profile Liverpool look to target — a player with first-team experience, but with potential to develop further. Unlike Isak, he is not the finished product, but he possesses a lot of traits that can be moulded into making him an elite striker. Ekitike is a tall, quick and technically gifted striker who would offer Liverpool a focal point for the likes of Mohamed Salah and Florian Wirtz to thrive off. He is a threat in the box, possesses clever movement and on the counter-attack, his athleticism and ball carrying attributes stand out.
