Workshop seeks to strengthen governance of heritage and tourism
MUSCAT: A national workshop focused on improving the governance of heritage and tourism development with Oman's governorates kicked off on Monday, May 26, in Muscat. The four-day event brings together representatives from 11 governorates, 17 government and support agencies; and a host of experts in governance, planning and tourism.
Organised by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in collaboration with the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit; and other public and private entities, the workshop aims to enhance institutional integration, promote decentralisation and find sustainable solutions to key challenges in the heritage and tourism sectors. The effort aligns with broader goals to boost public-private partnerships, empower local communities and raise institutional performance.
Azzan bin Qasim al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Tourism, noted that the initiative is part of a series of specialised workshops designed to address sector-specific challenges. 'Our objective is to develop effective governance mechanisms that not only support the national economy but also strengthen Omani cultural identity,' he said.
The workshop focuses on three strategic pillars:
1. Governance and Institutional Integration: Enhancing coordination among entities to achieve unified development goals.
2. Investment and Tourism Development Governance: Improving the investment landscape to unlock growth opportunities.
3. Development of Tourism Facilities and Public Services: Advancing infrastructure and services to improve visitor experience and support long-term planning.
Participants will also explore best practices and models for tourism management governance to ensure sustainable resource use and balanced development. Discussions are shaped in part by feedback from governors and high-level officials, emphasising the importance of inclusive, locally driven solutions.
The workshop features visual presentations on the role of governorates in tourism development, the Ministry's responsibilities and the benefits of decentralisation. It is part of a broader initiative to support Oman Vision 2040 by fostering integrated development across all governorates. — ONA

Student participation in the competition was outstanding, highlighting their creativity and alignment with market needs. The panel discussion on the added value of research further emphasised the importance of collaboration between education and various sectors.' Oman's pavilion showcases cultural identity at Algiers Intl Fair
ALGIERS: The Sultanate of Oman's pavilion at the 56th Algiers International Fair (where Oman serves as a Guest of Honour) stands out for its stunning design and features exhibiting Oman's economic and cultural identity; and a broad range of unique items that appeal to the visitors. The Omani pavilion showcases the products of 60 companies operating in pharmaceutical, transport, electrical, real estate, fisheries, tourism, food and handicrafts sectors. In particular, Oman's cultural aspect is highlighted through the gallery that showcases Al Aqur neighbourhood (in Nizwa) that has been renovated to become a tourist attraction linked to the historical Nizwa Fort, the old capital of the Sultanate of Oman, Nizwa, once famous for being a hub for the traditional Omani sweets industry. Oman pavilion was designed as an integrated Omani village featuring landmarks Mahmoud Suleiman al Yazidi, Head of the Export Promotion Department at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, said that, after the Sultanate of Oman was selected as the Guest of Honour at the Algiers International Fair, emphasis was laid on devising a comprehensive vision that reflects Omani identity in all economic, cultural and service aspects. Al Yazidi said that the Omani pavilion occupies an area of 900 square metres and includes special galleries for government departments, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), large companies and craftsmen. He pointed out that the pavilion was designed as an integrated Omani village, featuring some landmarks that bear significance from the local environment and a host of components that inspire visitors to appreciate the depth of Omani civilisation, history and heritage. Al Yazidi explained that the pavilion's designs were supervised by 'Oman Exports Initiative' team, thus offering a symbolic gesture to open up new vistas for Omani products around the world and chart out a path for Omani exporters in their bids to explore target markets. The vitality of the Omani pavilion is further underscored by the strong presence of an Omani folklore band, which keeps performing national songs that reflect the Sultanate of Oman's artistic and cultural heritage. — ONA

E-freelancing gains momentum among Omani youth
MUSCAT: Online freelancing is gaining strong traction across the Sultanate of Oman, fuelled by the evolving digital economy and proactive government initiatives that support self-employment and youth empowerment. Aza bint Ibrahim al Kindi, Director of Commercial Affairs and E-Commerce at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, noted that e-commerce has become one of the most prominent freelancing sectors. This growth has been supported by streamlined licensing procedures, including the introduction of the 'Freelance Business Register' – a low-cost, regulated framework for individuals to operate legally. She emphasised that e-commerce offers significant advantages: low startup costs, broad consumer reach, and access to regional and global markets. These benefits make it an ideal platform for young Omanis seeking to build sustainable businesses and diversify income streams. Aza bint Ibrahim al Kindi, Director of Commercial Affairs and E-Commerce at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion Over 200 commercial activities are now covered by freelance licences, allowing businesses to gain consumer trust through platforms such as 'Maroof Oman,' which authenticates licensed e-stores.
