Alfred Ford and wife keen to visit Jagannath temple in Digha
"
We eagerly look forward to visiting this divine abode of Their Lordships and consider it our greatest fortune to be able to offer our humble pranams and heartfelt prayers at Their lotus feet. It is no exaggeration to say that the golden state of West Bengal will be restored to its original glory with this temple at Digha and the much-anticipated opening of the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium in Sri Dham Mayapur in 2027.
This will place West Bengal as a major spiritual destination on the world map," Alfred and Sharmila said in a joint statement.
"Our heartiest felicitations to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee for this sacred endeavour! The magnificent grand mandir is truly worthy of the Lord of the Universe, Sri Jagannath," they added.
Alfred Ford, who joined Iskcon in 1975 and was christened Ambarish Das, is chairman of the Sri Mayapur Temple of the Vedic Planetarium.

He expressed his keenness to visit the Jagannath temple when Iskcon Kolkata vice-president Radharamn Das invited him and Sharmila, also known as Svaha Devi Dasi, to the temple.
Alfred Ford's mother, Josephine Clay Ford (1923–2005), was the daughter of Edsel Ford (1893–1943), who was the son of Henry Ford (1863–1947). Henry Ford shot into prominence after the introduction of the Ford Model T in October 1908, which became the first mass-produced affordable automobile at the world's first assembly line for cars in Michigan, US.
Alfred Ford's father was Walter B. Ford II (1920–1991), whose family was prominent in chemical manufacturing in the Downriver area south of Detroit.
In 1974, Ford became a disciple of Srila Prabhupada, whom he first met in Dallas. He made his first trip to India with Prabhupada the next year. Since then, he visited India and Mayapur several times. Alfred's wife, Sharmila, hails from a Bengali family.
While the couple visited various Krishna temples across the world, they never had access to the Jagannath temple in Puri as only devotees of Hindu descent are allowed there. Though the Digha temple is a replica of the Puri shrine, it does not distinguish devotees based on birth, religion, nationality, or race.
"While the tradition in Puri restricts entry only to those born as Hindus, the Digha temple welcomes all who come with a sincere heart and respect for Lord Jagannath," said Radharamn Das.

India needs to be careful after US-Vietnam deal: Experts
India needs to tread carefully in its trade negotiations with the United States, keeping in view the terms proposed under the latter's trade deal with Vietnam, trade experts say. As per the new trade pact announced by President Donald Trump , the US will impose a flat 20% tariff, besides a 40% tariff on transshipped goods from Vietnam. Beyond a deviation from the previous commitments under the 2000 US-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), where Vietnamese goods were subject to 2-10% tariffs, the new deal seeks to tax transshipped goods, which differs from the rules of origin on which tariffs or duty concessions are based. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ултрапреносими 2-в-1 таблети - 50% отстъпка в последния ден LYH Купете сега Undo "The terms are that Vietnam will pay the United States a 20% tariff on any and all goods sent into our territory, and a 40% tariff on any transshipping," Trump said in a post on X. "India needs to be cautious as these transshipment tariffs could be a different form of 'rules of origin', which could have a detrimental impact on our pharmaceutical and electronics exports where the import component is high," said trade expert Biswajit Dhar. Live Events Indian trade negotiators are in the US since last week to thrash out a deal before the July 9 deadline for an interim deal to avoid US reciprocal tariffs, but India has hardened its stance to protect its sensitivities.

Centre picks Bhopal for beggar-free project under SMILE scheme
Bhopal: An order of district collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh, ahead of Global Investors' Summit (GIS-2025) taking place in the state capital, to enforce 'begging ban' may not have freed Bhopal from the scourge of begging but there is still hope. Bhopal has now been selected by the union ministry of social justice and empowerment under its Support for Marginalised Individuals for Lideligood & Enterprise (SMILE) project to make the city beggar-free. Singh had banned begging under section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Samhita (BNSS) on February 3, 2025. Under the ban, both begging and giving alms to beggars had been banned and declared a crime. Children selling goods on traffic signals and other places had also been banned. A committee headed by joint director, social justice department, RK Singh was also formed to monitor the impact of the ban and initially, there appeared to be some impact with at least begging on roads and busy traffic junctions coming under control but beggars could still be seen particularly outside religious places and markets. A night shelter room in Kolar was converted into 'Bhikshu grah (a place for stay of beggars, where they were provided food and shelter)' but overall, the experiment didn't have the desired impact. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Now, the ministry of social justice and empowerment has stepped in selecting Bhopal district under its project SMILE to make it begging-free.
