Students do Gisborne Boys' High proud at Super 8 Cultural Festival
That has extended to other sports and events over the years.
The Super 8 Cultural Festival gives students the opportunity to take part in kapa haka, Pasifika performance, dance, theatresports, drama, oratory, debating, solo and group music, chess and visual art at senior and junior level.
'The Super 8 Cultural event is magnificent and the talent on display was amazing,' Cairns said.
'For the festival to run in one venue at a central location makes the event accessible and allows all students to showcase their abilities to large audiences on a national level.'
This year GBHS students were involved in kapa haka, chess, junior and senior debating, junior and senior oratory, senior solo music and group music.
Next year, the school hopes to field teams in all categories.
Cairns said the boys represented themselves and the school admirably and skilfully, as was reflected in their success.
The band Iwi, comprising six Year 12 and 13 students, was second-equal in the group music category.
The three Year 9 and 10 students who made up the junior debating team were second in their first-ever competition.
'Participating and performing in the arts allow students to master skills that will help them to become confident young men who are competent communicators, capable and comfortable at making connections with others,' GBHS director of arts David Lindup said.
'The festival provides an extended opportunity for our students to participate at a level which they do not have locally.'
The Super 8 focus shifts to rugby on Saturday, with Gisborne Boys' High School First XV playing Palmerston North in Gisborne.

Reggae music legend George ‘Fiji' Veikoso dies aged 55
'His music wasn't just something we listened to. It was something we lived through. It was the soundtrack to our childhoods, our family parties, our car rides, our quiet nights, our celebrations, and our heartbreaks.' Labour Party Deputy Leader Carmel Sepuloni said she couldn't comprehend Veikoso's death. 'One of the most talented Pasifika/ reggae musicians ever - if not the most talented,' she wrote. 'I was in awe of his music but in his humble gracious way, he was respectful to me for my political accomplishments.' Veikoso, born in 1970, was regarded as one of the most original and dynamic entertainers in the Pacific Rim. He left Fiji in 1987 because of the country's coup d'état and settled in Hawaii. His island roots-inspired grooves earned him a place in popular television and film. He co-wrote the theme song for Baywatch Hawaii, appeared as an actor in the film Blue Crush and performed on the Live with Emeril Lagasse cooking show. Rest Easy Fiji ❤️ A staple for all of Polynesia. He connected every single Polynesian together. Your music and message will forever live on. A true Warrior Of Love🤟🏽 Thank you, Mahalo, Fa'afetai🤙🏽🇦🇸🇼🇸🇹🇴🇫🇯 — Braeden Lafaele Meyer (@Coach_BMeyer) July 24, 2025 Last year, he hosted a two-day homecoming concert in Nadi, which brought an estimated $1 million into the local economy. Katchafire's Logan Bell described Veikoso as an 'amazing human to sit down and have a chat to'. 'I just love the way he talks about indigenous peoples throughout the Pacific – you can call them Polynesian or Pasifika – and what life was once like in pre-European, pre-colonial days,' he said. 'I love the way he talks about whakapapa. There was communication, there was trade, there was a cohesive way of life back then. Māori history really interests me, indigenous history really interests me, and sacred knowledge and the [earlier] ways of life.'

Mana Moana Wellington Shows With Signature Choir And NZSO Now Sold Out
Press Release – NZSO Mana Moana celebrates two worlds of music, with the NZSO led by acclaimed conductor Brent Stewart, and each performance hosted by talented actor and comedian Tofiga Fepuleai. Wellington has again embraced the hit show Mana Moana and its spectacular fusion of symphony and songs of the Pacific. Both performances by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the 50-strong Wellington-based Signature Choir this Thursday and Friday at the Michael Fowler Centre are sold out. Mana Moana celebrates two worlds of music, with the NZSO led by acclaimed conductor Brent Stewart, and each performance hosted by talented actor and comedian Tofiga Fepulea'i. 'We are incredibly humbled and grateful to return home to two sold-out shows,' says Signature Choir Founder and Music Director Helen Tupai. 'After selling out back-to-back performances at the iconic Sydney Opera House in June, coming back to where our Mana Moana journey began and reuniting with the world-class NZSO is the perfect way to close our 2025 Mana Moana season. These sold-out shows are a testament to our communities' unwavering support, and we cannot wait to put on an unforgettable homecoming show!' Following 2022's sensational debut in Wellington and a hit performance with the NZSO in Auckland in 2023, Mana Moana reached new heights this year with a second show at Auckland's Spark Arena in May. Sydney audiences loved every minute of the choir's historic performances with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra last month. 'What an incredible performance! The energy in the room was electric. So privileged to experience this iconic moment,' an audience member told ABC Pacific. Wellington audiences on 24 and 25 July will again experience an energetic, unique, and emotional celebration, bringing traditional and contemporary songs from Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau. The exciting music selection blends beloved favourites from the previous shows with fresh new arrangements, offering an even richer experience for audiences. The stunning mix of traditional and contemporary songs includes the Samoan classic Manu o le Vaveao, Nepituno —written by Queen Salote Tupou III to commemorate the 1953 Royal Tour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's visit to Tonga—and an exhilarating medley featuring some of the most iconic Fijian songs, and much more. In 2022 a collaborative journey between the NZSO and Signature Choir to celebrate and promote the languages and stories of Pasifika. Their aim was to create high-quality audio recordings and videos of Pasifika songs in partnership with RNZ. This was then followed by a live performance at the Michael Fowler Centre where audience-recorded videos from the show have accumulated in over 1 million views on social media, highlighting the massive impact Mana Moana had and resulted in an incredible musical experience in 2023 and 2025 at Spark Arena.
