Dead man found entangled in fishing net at Modderfontein Reserve
Kempton Express reports that on July 17, it was alleged that the victim was dropping nets from a canoe during the night and never returned. WPDS went to search for the man last week.
According to SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the members were shown where the nets were visible. They deployed a vessel with WPDS and two K9 dogs to comb the area and identified gases released from a submerged body.
Giblin says that before any underwater search could commence, the members removed the net for the divers' safety.
'As the net was reeled in with a large quantity of live fish still entrapped, the members neared the end of the 400m length to find the victim's body also entrapped in the netting,' says Giblin.
'The body was handed to the Sebenza detective on the scene, and a family member immediately identified the 45-year-old victim.'
In other incidents, three unknown victims were recovered in separate incidents in Sedibeng, Vereeniging, on July 17; in Tshwane at the Bon Accord Dam on July 19; and in Johannesburg at a Turfontein quarry on July 21.
Inquest dockets for these cases are under investigation by the local SAPS stations.

JOHANNESBURG - Almost 500 illegal miners brought to the surface from a mine in Barberton in Mpumalanga last Friday are set to appear at the Barberton Magistrate's Court on Monday. Ten EMPD and SAPS officers arrested in Edenvale to appear in court over June raid Ten police officers from the SAPS and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court on 5 August, following their arrest on 4 August at Edenvale Police Station. The officers were taken into custody while on duty. According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), they face charges of corruption and theft. Ipid spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the arrests are linked to a multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation that took place on 4 June in Edenvale, initiated by the Premier of Gauteng. During the operation, the officers allegedly raided a shop, confiscated cigarettes, and took R35 000 in cash along with three packs of headache tablets (Panados) estimated at R5 000. ALSO READ: 10 officers arrested in Edenvale on theft and corruption charges 'They arrested the cashier for trading in illicit cigarettes and the other employee for violating immigration rules,' Suping stated. However, it is alleged that not all the confiscated items were recorded in the police occurrence book. The shop manager later disputed the quantity and type of goods that were logged. All the arrested officers are Constables, except for one Sergeant. They are currently detained at Germiston Police Station. National reports indicate that six of the arrested officers are from EMPD, while the remaining four are SAPS members stationed at Tsakane Police Station.

Elderly couple assaulted, tied up on Free State farm: Suspects caught on same day as robbery Two men were arrested shortly after an elderly couple were attacked, tied up and robbed on their Smithfield farm, in the Free State, yesterday. Bloemfontein Courant reports that the couple, aged 78 and 81, returned to their farm at around 13:30 when they were confronted by two suspects. According to Free State police spokesperson Captain Loraine Earle, the wife entered the house while her husband remained outside. 'While approaching the kitchen door, she was overpowered by two unknown suspects,' says Earle. 'They assaulted her, threatened her with knives, and forced her back to where her husband was still approaching the house. The suspects then forced both victims into the house and tied them up with cable ties.' The house was ransacked, phones, cash and jewellery stolen, and the husband was forced to transfer money. 'The suspects then pushed the husband into his own vehicle and drove off with him,' adds Earle. 'They later abandoned him in the driveway of the farm before fleeing the scene in the stolen vehicle.' The couple contacted neighbouring farmers and police. Two suspects, aged 29 and 36, were arrested on their way to Bethulie shortly afterwards. Police recovered the stolen cash and vehicle. Free State police commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane has assigned the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit to lead the investigation. Forensic experts have processed the scene. Earle confirms the suspects remain in custody and face charges of house robbery with aggravating circumstances, theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of suspected stolen property. Motswenyane commended the rapid response: 'The seamless co-operation between the community, our rural safety partners, and SAPS units ensured these suspects were taken off the streets before sunset.
