Lionesses' triumph: England to celebrate back-to-back European titles with open-top parade
England successfully defended its Women's European Championship title by beating world champion Spain in a shootout in the final in Basel, Switzerland on Sunday.
After becoming the first England team to win a major tournament on foreign soil, the squad will celebrate its victory with a trip to Downing Street later on Monday.
Celebrations will continue on Tuesday with an open-top bus parade in central London, ending with a ceremony in front of Buckingham Palace.
Fans erupted with joy across England after Chloe Kelly lashed in her spot kick to give her team a 3-1 win on penalties, after a 1-1 draw following extra time.
King Charles III said the team had the royal family's 'warmest appreciation and admiration' following its win.
'The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can,' he added.
The Downing Street reception will be hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock.
'The Lionesses have once again captured the hearts of the nation,' British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said. 'Their victory is not only a remarkable sporting achievement, but an inspiration for young people across the country. It stands as a testament to the determination, resilience and unity that define this outstanding team.'
It was back-to-back European trophies for England and yet another final that Kelly had a huge impact on, after also coming on as a substitute during the Euro 2022 trophy match and scoring the winner against Germany in extra time to clinch a 2-1 victory.

Arteta gives positive update on 5 Arsenal injuries
Mikel Arteta gave a largely positive update on five of Arsenal's six injured players on Thursday, with just over two weeks until the start of the new season. Photo via At the time of writing, Arsenal have six players known to be dealing with injury problems: Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Magalhaes, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Leandro Trossard. Jesus is still out for the long term, but Mikel Arteta gave largely positive updates on the other five in his press conference on Thursday. Photo via The big news was the update on Gabriel, Timber, and Calafiori, with Arteta suggesting all three will be fit in time for the Manchester United match on August 17th. 'I don't think [they'll still be unavailable], they've been involved in the last few days,' Arteta said. 'So Gabriel, Calafiori, Timber, the three of them will be available.' The news on Kepa also seemed to be positive, with Arteta admitting he might even have played the goalkeeper on Thursday if it had been a competitive fixture. 'He felt something as well in the game against Newcastle,' Arteta began. 'I think it's a matter of days probably – if that was the Premier League he could have played but we decided not to take a risk.' Photo byThe only real concern is for Trossard, who was forced off just 17 minutes after coming on against Spurs. Arteta played the injury down as a 'little tweak', but added that they'll need to run further tests on the winger. 'He felt a little tweak, I think he tried to turn and he was pushed and he felt something muscular so we'll have to assess him,' Arteta said. If the assessments go well, it may only be Gabriel Jesus still missing by the time the competitive matches start up again.

Culture Secretary calls on Morecambe owner to sell
The culture, media and sport secretary has written an open letter to Morecambe owner Jason Whittingham calling on him to sell the club. Earlier this week the Lancashire side were suspended by the National League for failing to comply with their rules and, on Thursday, prospective buyers Panjab Warriors said in a joint-statement with the club's minority shareholders that the club would shut on Monday without a takeover. Lisa Nandy said that the incoming football regulator would look to stop situations like this arising again in the future but "will not be up and running in time to help Morecambe today". She added: "It is imperative that you act and get round the table to do so." In the most recent statement from Whittingham on Sunday, he said owners Bond Group Investments were ready to sell and urged Panjab Warriors to make contact. The sports investment company, who have been in talks to purchase the club for more than a year, released a statement on Tuesday which said they remain "ready, willing and able" to take over.

Preston 1-3 Liverpool: Emotional tributes to Diogo Jota as Reds begin pre-season with a win
Liverpool launched their 2025/26 campaign with a comfortable 3-1 win over Preston North End on Sunday, though football was not the focus of the afternoon. Taking place just 10 days after Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva were tragically killed in a car accident, the tie was as much a memorial as it was a friendly. Red No20 shirts pockmarked all four stands, while the away contingent brought with them their full songbooks and a sea of commemorative flags. There was not a dry eye in the ground, nor an arm without goosebumps, as Claudia Rose Maguire serenaded the 22,189 in attendance with an emotional rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' ahead of kick-off - a tear-jerker at the best of times, but even more so given the circumstances of the day. Arne Slot was provided a full audit of his squad on this sunny Lancashire afternoon, as 22 Reds players took to the pitch at Deepdale, though new British record signing Florian Wirtz was notably absent. After a minute of silence, Liverpool started the tie on top, with Rio Ngumoah and Dominik Szoboszlai the driving forces in attack. The Hungarian stood out as particularly sharp in a side still blunted by disrupted preseason training, picking smart passes and providing a crucial link between the lines. Preston grew into the tie, bolstered in no small part by the newly signed Thierry Small's marauding runs down the left flank. But neither side could find a breakthrough ahead of the half-hour water break. Not that the red-shirted travelling fans in the Bill Shankly Stand needed anything to sing about. They were vocal throughout the tie, swelling on the 20-minute mark into a full-throated memorial dirge for Jota. And perhaps spurred on by the music, Liverpool opened the scoring shortly after through Conor Bradley. The live wire Ngumoah beat his man and shuffled into the area before being dispossessed by his teammate Federico Chiesa. The Italian's deflected shot fell to Szoboszlai, who also misfired before the ball fell to Bradley to tap home at the far post. That would be the only difference at half-time, despite Preston twice going close in injury time. Slot made eleven changes at the break, heralding debuts for Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, but it would be another man of transfer intrigue who doubled Liverpool's lead. Darwin Nunez, heavily linked with a move away this summer, latched onto a loose backpass and finished after rounding the keeper. He celebrated in Jota's signature fashion, sitting cross-legged on the grass with an imaginary video-game controller in hand. Liverpool remained on top through the closing stages, save for a pair of squandered Preston counter-attacks. Kerkez appeared composed in his Liverpool bow, while Gakpo also returned from the summer break with his shooting boots freshly relaced, though his finishing was a touch rusty. Preston pulled back a deserved consolation goal as the clock wound down, and were unlucky not to equalise as Freddie Woodman, freshly signed from Preston, floundered on his Liverpool debut, much to the delight of the home support. But Gakpo was there to ensure Liverpool ended the day with a two-goal advantage, slotting home from close range as the clock wound down to ensure Liverpool's winning return to the pitch. There is still much for this team to work through before the Premier League campaign begins next month, but this will result set them well on the road to recovery.
