Heath announces retirement after long absence and injuries
NEW YORK - United States two-time World Cup winner Tobin Heath announced her retirement on Thursday, after years away from the sport due to injury, disappointing her legions of fans who hoped she might one day retake the field.
Famed for her cool demeanour and extraordinary intelligence on the pitch, Heath picked up two Olympic golds and won the NWSL championship twice with the Portland Thorns.
"I think I had a few more mountains I wanted to climb with football, even though I'm really grateful for the career that I had," the 37-year-old forward said on her RE-CAP Show podcast.
"I get the question all the time 'So, are you coming back?' and kind of like, well, the writing's on the wall."
Heath last played for OL Reign and underwent season-ending knee surgery in September 2022 after suffering an injury.
One of the most decorated figures in the wildly successful U.S. Soccer programme, she was named U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year in 2016 and earned 181 caps with the national team in her career.
"I never played to be famous or for people to care about me," said Heath. "I just played because I loved it." REUTERS

YAOUNDE - Marc Brys has denied he has quit as coach of Cameroon despite the country's football federation confirming his exit on Wednesday, as the Belgian said his email was likely hacked and his alleged resignation letter did not come from him. It is the latest twist in a long-running battle between Brys and the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) since his appointment by the country's sports ministry in April 2024. A letter dated July 21, supposedly from Brys to the sports ministry and FECAFOOT, said he had made the decision to terminate his contract "due to the non-payment of my remuneration and that of my staff for more than 60 days." When the letter came into the public domain on Wednesday, FECAFOOT said in a statement they had noted the resignation and would "implement a coordinated response to mitigate the impact of this vacancy at the head of the national team's technical staff." However, Brys later said in a letter to the sports ministry that his email had likely been hacked, and that he had not resigned. Cameroon's sports ministry confirmed that Brys remained in his role. FECAFOOT has not responded to the coach's denial. It comes five months before the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco and with Cameroon's qualification for the 2026 World Cup undecided. Brys has had a testy relationship with FECAFOOT president Samuel Eto'o since taking the job last year, but his position is funded by the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education. Cameroon have been drawn in a group with defending champions Ivory Coast, Gabon and Mozambique at the December 21-January 18 finals of the AFCON. They are currently second in their qualifying pool for next year's World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, a point behind Cape Verde with four rounds remaining. Only the top team automatically earns their place at the finals, with Cameroon set for a crunch tie away against Cape Verde in September. The qualification campaign will conclude in October. REUTERS

Rice, who has had senior leadership experience with 21st Century Fox and The Walt Disney Company, will serve as lead executive producer for both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies in Los Angeles. Greek masterclass sees off Hungary 12-9 to clinch women's water polo title at World Aquatics C'ships
SINGAPORE – Spurred on by a section of loud supporters at the OCBC Aquatic Centre on July 23, Greece put on a masterclass to defeat Hungary 12-9 in the women's water polo final of the World Aquatics Championships (WCH). The win gave the Greeks their second world championship title, having won it for the first time in China in 2011. The two sides had met in the Women's Water Polo World Cup final in April, where Greece were also victorious in China, winning 13-9. The teams also faced each other in the group stage here in Singapore and Hungary had edged out their rivals 10-9 on July 11. In the final on July 23, Greece opened the scoring through tournament top scorer Foteini Tricha (25 goals including a hat-trick in the final) and despite Natasa Rybanska's equaliser, goals from Eleni Xenaki and captain Eleftheria Plevritou helped the Greek to finish the first quarter 3-1 up. It was all Greece in the second period as Xenaki completed her hat-trick, with the Hungarians struggling to find the net after several saves from Greek custodian Ioanna Stamatopoulou, as the teams headed into the half at 8-4. Despite a late Hungarian comeback in the third (2-2) and fourth (3-2) periods, Greece managed to see out the match 12-9. In the earlier bronze-medal match, world No. 1 Spain survived a late scare to pip third-ranked United States 13-12. Inspired by Emma Lineback, who scored a game-high five goals, eight-time world champions US clawed back a 7-4 first-half deficit but ran out of time against the Olympic champions.
