You might occasionally stop and admire the murals that you've walked by hundreds of times, which could lead you to stumble upon other hidden gems in your area, like a series of tiny doors painted across your town, an incredible art exhibit or the legend behind The Tree That Owns Itself.
However, visiting some of the popular attractions in any city can quickly add up. Consider some of these free alternatives to get you out and exploring, without breaking the bank.

Things to do near me
You might be familiar with your town, but do you really know it? It could be known for the art scene with murals on buildings or if it's brimming with history, but have you ever stopped to read the signs detailing the history of your town square or the story behind the landmark you've passed every day for years? What better time to find out than now! You may even be able to find local scavenger hunts or art walks that can guide you and teach you if you're unsure of where to start.
Social media makes it so much easier to find things happening in your area. You can find local influencers or community groups that share details about free events or share spots that you have never heard about before. Hashtags can be helpful. Search tags like #exploreAtlanta or #thingstodoinNYC to get an idea of what might be of interest. You're probably not the only person looking for free and unique ways to pass the time, so see what people are saying on places like your local Facebook group, subreddit or Nextdoor.
Having fun isn't hard if you've got a library card! See what free passes your library offers. Many have ways to get you free access to places like museums, zoos, aquariums and state parks, simply by having a library card.
If you are willing to spend some money, see if there is a CityPASS available in your area. These passes offer discounted rates to popular attractions and can help you enjoy what your town has to offer at a fraction of the price.
Flaneur
Become a flaneur!
If you're unfamiliar with the term, Cambridge Dictionary defines it as 'someone who walks around not doing anything in particular but watching people and society.' This could involve people watching or meandering towards the sound of church bells or live music.
If being entirely aimless isn't your thing, there is a way to add a bit of structure to it. Consider making a list of 'instructions' to follow to help you as you wander. It could include:
Get on the next bus and ride it until someone with glasses gets on.
Take the next right after you pass three people wearing red.
Take a right when you see someone wearing a baseball cap.
Take the second right after you pass someone walking their dog.
Take a left after you pass a school, place of worship, or landmark.
Order a coffee at the next cafe and sit outside until you see two women walking together, then head to the right.
Get creative with it! This can be especially fun for kids to flex their creative muscles by thinking up fun combinations.

Packed cruise ship loses power, set adrift for 3 hours due to ‘technical issue'
These travelers certainly didn't feel like celebrities. This past Saturday, a Celebrity Cruises ship packed with vacationers was left temporarily powerless after a significant electrical failure — causing it to drift off a southern Italian coast, according to CruiseMapper. The incident occurred on Saturday, August 2, when the Celebrity Constellation lost power while sailing in the Ionian Sea — approximately 25 miles southeast of Crotone, Italy — during its 11-night Mediterranean voyage. Advertisement Facebook/Mike Van Horn The cruise ship, which carries over 2,100 guests and roughly 1,000 crew members, was scheduled to spend the day at sea before its next port of call in Messina, Sicily. Instead, the vessel suffered a total electrical outage for three hours — cutting off lighting, air conditioning, toilets and kitchen facilities. Advertisement The ship slowed to just 1–2 knots, far below its typical cruising speed of 24 knots, and drifted for nearly three hours, according to Cruise Hive. The vessel suffered a total electrical outage, cutting off lighting, air conditioning, toilets, and kitchen facilities. Facebook/Mike Van Horn Passengers aboard the Constellation were left without air conditioning in temperatures nearing 80°F, causing conditions inside the ship to quickly become uncomfortable. In the absence of functional kitchens, guests were served cold meals for dinner. Despite the discomfort, many passengers noted the crew remained professional and communicative. Advertisement The ship's emergency generators activated as designed, maintaining minimal essential systems including emergency lighting, fire detection, and communications. A spokesperson for the Royal Caribbean Group, parent company of Celebrity Cruises, confirmed to USA Today that the vessel experienced a power failure caused by a 'technical issue' but provided no further details about the root cause or the repair process. Engineering crews on board worked closely with shoreside support teams to restore functionality. Advertisement Although power was gradually restored after about two hours, the vessel remained stationary for some time before regaining full propulsion. The cruise took off from Ravenna, Italy, on July 28 and will end in Civitavecchia-Rome on Aug. 8. It is currently en route to Naples, though it remains unclear if it made it to Messina on schedule. Power failures at sea, which are not uncommon, can be triggered by a range of factors, including electrical faults, engine room complications or software issues. Comparisons were made to past incidents such as the 2013 Carnival Triumph power failure — which was detailed in the Netflix docuseries 'Trainwreck: Poop Cruise' — though passengers aboard the Constellation were quick to note that this was nowhere near as severe.

‘Curious' sea creature spotted off California coast. See it ‘eyeball' everyone
'Giggles' and 'shrieks of joy' were abundant after boaters spotted a sea creature off the coast of California. On Aug. 3, a 'curious' minke whale gave passengers a 'next level' experience after deciding to get up close and personal, according to a Facebook post by the San Diego Whale Watch. The 'fun' minke whale circled the boat for 35 minutes and surfaced within a few feet of boaters, the group said. Passengers ran around the boat to get the best look at the whale before it decided to 'eyeball' everyone, the group said. The day didn't end there, as passengers were also able to see 'a megapod of common dolphins stampeding together,' leaving boaters 'utterly surrounded,' the group said. The group ended the day among 'peachy rays of sunlight' and a few feeding frenzies of short beaked and long beaked common dolphins, boaters said.

How many miles will Nebraska football travel in 2025?
One of the biggest changes to college sports over the past several seasons has been conference realignment. With the realignment, regional conferences now stretch coast to coast, resulting in an increase in travel and a dramatic increase in the miles traveled. The Big Ten Huddle did the calculations, and the numbers are eye-popping. No surprise that the four former Pac-12 teams will travel the most in the Big Ten Conference in 2025. Oregon leads the group, with the Ducks scheduled to travel 8,128 miles. Illinois will do the least amount of traveling, with only 2,735 miles scheduled this season. The Huskers ranked tenth in the Big Ten, with 3,790 miles scheduled. Nebraska will open the 2025 college football season on the road. They will face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on August 28. The Cornhuskers will only travel four times during Big Ten play. They will play at Minnesota, Maryland, and Penn State, but the farthest road trip in 2025 will be on November 8 when Nebraska plays the UCLA Bruins at the Rose Bowl. Find the entire Big Ten breakdown below. Oregon Ducks - 8,128 miles UCLA Bruins - 7,606 miles USC Trojans - 7,306 miles Washington Huskies - 7,023 miles Rutgers Scarlet Knights - 5,230 miles Michigan Wolverines - 4,241 miles Maryland Terrapins - 4,224 miles Minnesota Golden Gophers - 4,113 miles Penn State Nittany Lions - 3,829 miles Nebraska Cornhuskers - 3,790 miles Michigan State Spartans - 3,777 miles Northwestern Wildcats - 3,719 miles Indiana Hoosiers - 3,472 miles Wisconsin Badgers - 3,195 miles Ohio State Buckeyes - 3,033 miles Iowa Hawkeyes - 2,943 miles Purdue Boilermakers - 2,736 miles Illinois Fighting Illini - 2,735 miles Contact/Follow us @CornhuskersWire on X (formerly Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Nebraska news, notes, and opinions.
