Gold Digger: Gold's fundamentals remain strong as investors seek shelter from the economic storm
If economic conditions deteriorate, gold could run 10-15% higher still in H2
Anno Domini, anything goes in 2025 for gold with Bombs Over Baghdad (well not Baghdad, but all around it, it seems) sending the precious metal on a rocket to all time highs.
We've caught our breath after the first round of Trump Admin tariffs and war in the Middle East sent bullion to US$3500/oz in April.
But the precious metal is still 26% up through the first six months of the year and, as noted by the World Gold Council in its mid-year review this week, it's outperformed every asset major class there is, at least from an American-Eurocentric perspective.
All up, the WGC has counted some 26 new all time highs through the first half of 2025, following on from 40 in 2024.
Gold's attractiveness in times of crisis has been a major factor, with trade wars and concerns over the US economy sending investors flocking from US Treasuries for safe haven.
The US Dollar has had its worst start to a year since 1973.
"Conversely, gold ETF demand was particularly strong in the first half of the year, led by notable inflows from all regions," the WGC said in its report.
"By the end of H1 the combination of a surging gold price and investor flight to safety pushed global gold ETF's total AUM 41% higher to US$383bn.
"Total holdings rose by an impressive 397t (equivalent to US$38bn) to 3,616t – the highest month-end level since August 2022."
While central bank demand doesn't look as strong as it did in the past three years, it will remain above long term averages.
"At the same time, central bank demand is likely to remain robust in 2025, moderating from its previous records while staying well above the pre-2022 average of 500-600t."
So where to from here?
The WGC doesn't predict prices.
But it has analysed the likelihood of various economic scenarios playing out.
In the bull case global economic conditions could deteriorate, with gold benefitting from "lower interest rates and dollar weakness given growing concerns around US economic leadership and policy uncertainty."
That would likely prompt a resurgence in central bank buying to diversify holdings away from paper currency and the Greenback, while gold ETFs have some slack.
While high prices have been a deterrent, it's worth noting at 3616t, physical ETF holdings are shy of the 2020 peak of 3925t.
The current bull cycle has seen 500t of additions and 400t of accumulation in the past six months alone. Previous bull cycles have seen ETFs amass 700-1100t, the WGC notes.
A bull case could add a further 10-15% to gold in H2 for a 40% gain, eclipsing the percentage gain across 2024.
A bear case, which would likely follow some form of risk resolution in terms of geopolitical and trade conflict (as remote as our dreams of firing Elon Musk off to Mars with only a Grok chatbot to keep him company), could lead to a 12-17% reduction in the gold price.
Never fear ASX gold investors. That still hits a comfy natural support level of US$3000/oz. If you're not making money at that price your mine is not worth its salt.
"In all, given the intrinsic limitations of forecasting the global economy, we believe that gold – through its fundamentals – remains well positioned to support tactical and strategic investment decisions in the current macro landscape," the report authors concluded.

Falcon Metals (ASX:FAL)
An unexplained 30% gain on Friday followed a high-grade gold discovery late last week from the Blue Moon prospect on the outskirts of the Bendigo gold zone.
The Bendigo region has delivered 22Moz of gold since the gold rush, including 5.2Moz at 15g/t from the Garden Gully Anticline.
Mark Bennett chaired Falcon thinks Blue Moon is sitting to the north of that trend on the Eastern Limb of the anticline, with visual gold and a deep hit of 1m at 543g/t from 544.2m getting small cap punters all hot and bothered.
Santa Fe Minerals (ASX:SFM)
This one has been quiet since early July, when it picked up the Eburnea project from West African gold hunter Turaco Gold (ASX:TCG), which hosts previous drill results like 26m at 4.82g/t and 30m at 1.92g/t.
SFM is now up a quite remarkable 725% in a month. Could it follow a similar trajectory to the now 2.5Moz Turaco and its Afema project and Many Peaks Minerals (ASX:MPK), which has had similar success at Ferké, another project traded out of Turaco's Cote d'Ivoire portfolio, and announced a private $13.5m placement this week?
Stavely Minerals (ASX:SVY)
Previously focused on the copper resource at its Cayley Lode discovery, SVY has turned its attention to the gold potential of its Stavely project in Western Victoria.
It plunged just one RC drill hole into the Fairview South prospect, but it was a good'un, striking 40m at 1.96g/t gold, from surface no less.
Some high-grade results from rock chips 600m to the south have also provided encouragement, opening up a fair lick of strike to target future drilling activities.
That was followed up by gold hits at the Fairview North prospect that suggested heap leachable material was located in shallow positions at the prospect, including a headline strike of 59m at 1.31g/t from surface.
"It's great to see such a consistent set of gold results from the recent RC drilling at Fairview North, where the mineralisation is characterised by shallow, broad zones of moderate grade gold mineralisation with notable internal zones of higher-grade," SVY MD Chris Cairns said.
'The significance of the shallow broader zones of gold mineralisation is that metallurgical testwork completed in 2017 clearly demonstrates that this style of mineralisation is amenable to low-capital and low-operating cost heap leach extraction."
SVY says it now understands the orientation to mineralisation at the Flexure A area, with more drilling to define that at the Flexure B and C areas.

Tony Rovira's latest gold and copper chess move has been revealed
Tony Rovira is back, baby, securing copper and gold exploration ground in the shadow of the famous DeGrussa copper mine for his new venture Solara Minerals The former Azure Minerals chief says exploration by the $5bn miner left a string of undrilled, walk up targets to test Could be the latest in a string of success stories for the famed geologist, credited with the world class Cosmos nickel and Andover lithium finds Tony Rovira has made a career out of finding world class deposits hiding in plain sight. A two-time AMEC Prospector Award winner who knows the sweat, blood and tears that build the foundations of a major discovery, his discography includes mega hits like the Andover lithium deposit near Roebourne in WA's Pilbara and Cosmos nickel complex west of Leinster. Both were found or developed as their respective markets boomed thanks to the electric vehicle revolution and China's economic miracle respectively. Could the former Azure Minerals chief, who exited that company on a high via a $1.7bn cash takeover by SQM and Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting, find his timing is just as perfect at his new explorer Solara Minerals (ASX:SLA)? The geologist's geologist Rovira stepped into the role as executive director at Solara in June, with experienced executive and former ASX exploration CEO Jennifer Neild also coming on board as general manager this month. And the transformation of the former Lycaon Resources is now complete, with the acquisition of the DeGrussa West and Wilgeena projects on the northern tip of the WA's vaunted Murchison gold field. With it, Solara cracks opens the file again on one of WA's biggest exploration mysteries – whether another DeGrussa exists, the shock copper find that turned Sandfire Resources (ASX:SFR) from a junior tiddler into a $5bn mid-tier. "I think that's a really good way of putting it, hiding in plain sight, just recognising opportunities which other people may have glossed over in the past," Rovira told Stockhead. "It was the same at Cosmos, it was the same up at Andover as well, previous explorers had generated anomalies which had never been followed up and we see the same situation happening on some of the ground that we've picked up now." Gold, copper, (Sand)fire Gold and copper are no doubt, like lithium was when Azure made its fateful Andover discovery in 2023, the markets to be in right now. The precious metal is trading above US$3300/oz, with the shaky geopolitical environment which has fuelled its rise likely to continue. Copper prices in New York hit all time highs above US$5.50/lb after threatened tariffs on the red metal from Donald Trump's administration were revealed. Longer term, the supply-demand set-up is as good as any commodity in the market, with falling discovery rates and steeply rising demand out to the middle of the century. Where Solara has a leg-up is its 310km2 of Bryah Basin ground has already been picked over, but never really drilled into. Sandfire held it within a vast and ungainly portfolio where it struggled make a genuine follow-up to the 2009 DeGrussa find. That means there are already targets for Solara to analyse. With its sole focus on Wilgeena and DeGrussa West – 17km on the same strike as the historic copper mine, where SFR outlined 13.8Mt at a mad grade of 4.8% copper and 1.8g/t gold – Solara is better placed to really interrogate their potential. "This particular portfolio of properties is put together by a group of private explorers," Rovira said. "And most of the ground has been looked at in some way by Sandfire in the past. But Sandfire had so much ground out there. "And they were spread so thin that they actually generated targets which were never followed up and there are some of those targets that are on the ground that we've picked up." DeGrussa West, the initial focus, was the subject of an airborne EM survey in 2009 flown by SFR, which identified the same bedrock conductors as those found a DeGrussa. SLA has already conducted a ground based EM survey to advance drill targets, which are accessible from station tracks and just waiting on approvals. Golden days There's more than just copper on the menu as well. DeGrussa and the Monty satellite mine are located nearby. But so are the 206,000oz Old Highway deposit recently sold by SFR to Catalyst Metals (ASX:CYL), with the 3g/t Au orebody to be an important future ore source for its Plutonic gold mine to the north-east. Catalyst's previously mined Hermes open pit (123,000oz at 1.4g/t), sits between DeGrussa West and the two Wilgeena tenements. Westgold Resources' (ASX:WGX) Peak Hill (481,000oz at 1.4g/t) is immediately north of Wilgeena, with its 677,000oz Fortnum/Starlight mine and mill further out to the north-west and the historic Horseshoe Lights gold and copper mine in between. Rovira says the first target to be tested will likely be the EM conductor at DeGrussa West which was identified in its ground EM survey. But Wilgeena, 15km from Peak Hill and 60 klicks from Fortnum, and located in a region from which 35Moz of gold has been produced, is looking very enticing for standalone gold targets. "Once again, Sandfire did a lot of reconnaissance type sampling out there and there are rock chips up to 7g/t gold, there are drill hits up to 2.2g/t gold and they were never followed up," he said. "Go figure." The purchase consideration is partly performance loaded. SLA will acquire 100% of the share capital of OD4 Tom Price Pty Ltd for $150,000 cash and 1.25m ordinary SLA shares – $250,000 at today's share price. Subject to shareholder approval, another 1.5m shares will be issued to the vendors if SLA achieves a drill hit of not less than 20% copper equivalent at a cut-off grade of 0.5% CuEq within three years of wrapping up the deal. Completion is targeted by the end of this month, with no shareholder approvals required. SLA shares were down slightly this morning, but are up close to 22% since the start of the year, including 15% over the past month.

‘Pay us what you owe us': America divided by WNBA T-shirt stunt
WNBA stars have sparked widespread divide by wearing T-shirts with 'pay us what you owe us' emblazed on the front. The blunt message was delivered during warm ups ahead of the WNBA All Star Game on Sunday amid ongoing collective bargaining agreement negotiations between the players and the league. With a late October deadline looming, the players' stance is clear … they want a bigger piece of the pie. It's not the first time WNBA players have demanded more pay, with the talking point rearing its head every year. The latest act however comes off the back of the league agreeing to an 11-year, $AUD3.38 billion TV rights deal with Disney, Amazon Prime Video and NBCUniversal that will come into play from 2026. The WNBA is booming with TV ratings (up 23%), ticket sales (up 26%) and attendance (13%) all surging halfway through the season, according to NPR. But the simple act of wearing a T-shirts demanding to be paid more sparked widespread divide with many believing the players are deserving of greater pay, while countless others pointed to the league's struggling finances which have seen the WNBA never make a profit. What is the WNBA's revenue? That's the big talking point behind all of the ongoing CBA negotiations, the WNBA players are chasing a large share of the league's revenue. Under the current CBA, the players split 9.3 per cent of league revenue. A figure far lesser than the NBA which sees players split between 49 and 51 per cent. The league currently operates off a revenue of $200m, but as is often pointed out when these discussions come to the table … the WNBA has yet to turn a profit since its inception in 1996. The NBA owns nearly 60 per cent of the league with team owners investing millions every year to the WNBA. Despite the recent uptick, the 2024 WNBA season saw the league lose $40 million. The new TV rights deal will inject $200m annually into the league, compared to the current deal which injects roughly $45m per season. With that deal set to come into play from 2026 onwards, WNBA players could soon see their salaries rise and the league turn a profit for the first time. What is the difference in WNBA and NBA salaries? According to Sports Illustrated, WNBA salaries roughly range from a minimum of $USD66,000 to a super maximum contract of around $USD250,000. Despite being the face of the league, Caitlin Clark remains on a rookie contract which will see her earn $78,000 in 2025. Compare those figures to the NBA and the difference is eye-watering. The average NBA salary for the 2024-25 season was projected to be $11,910,649, according to SI. The minimum salary came in at $1,157,153 while the highest-paid player, Stephen Curry, earned a staggering $55.7 million. America divided by players calling for more pay You can almost guarantee that anytime a WNBA player speaks out about wanting to be paid more, social media will be flooded with vitriol It kicked into overdrive on Sunday as images of the players wearing the shirts began to spread across the internet. End Wokeness wrote on X: 'The WNBA loses $50 million every year and has NEVER generated a profit. You deserve $0.00.' Jake Crain added: 'There is no league as tone deaf as the WNBA. 'Pay us what you owe us' shirts when you have to be subsidised is wild.' Fox Sports Radio host Aaron Torres wrote: 'There is no group of more delusional people on planet Earth, than WNBA players.' Of course not everyone was on the side of the corporation with a plethora of fans backing the players in chasing what they're worth. WTH News wrote: 'They're not asking for NBA bags, just their damn slice of the pie. Talent's on the court, money's on the table — time to match the energy. You don't build a league on players and leave them crumbs.' NBA and WNBA beat reporter Andrew Dukowitz wrote: 'The league is built on players, they deserve to get a bigger slice of the pie for the work they all have put in, and as the revenue grows, they should as well. The WNBA players are not asking to be paid dollar for dollar what the NBA players make, from what I understand they just want a fair share of the revenue.' Barstool Sports' Dave Portnoy took his outrage even further, savaging people who don't believe the WNBA players don't deserve a bigger slice. 'I don't know how anybody in the world with a brain, and maybe my brain is just bigger than most, can rationally say women don't deserve more money at this point,' Portnoy said in a video posted to social media. 'Franchise values are exploding. Ticket sales, merch, TV rights all exploding. The players have an opt out in their CBA. Of course they took it. It's all about leverage in re-negotiations and for the 1st time in history of the league players have power. 'The players make virtually nothing while the entire league explodes. Of course they deserve more money.' What will it mean if no agreement is reached? With the first round of talks going almost nowhere, the threat of a potential player lockout remains real. The players union has said it's preparing for a work stoppage when the current CBA expires Oct. 31.
