Kyiv has long sought to get more Patriots, which are regarded as among the best air defence systems in the world.
The White House's announcement will come as a huge relief to Ukrainians as they continue to face relentless Russian missile and drone strikes.
But Russia has reacted furiously to the news, accusing Ukraine's military backers of sponsoring "terrorist scum".
Russian Foreign Ministry representative Maria Zakharova told the state-news agency TASS: "Those who supply weapons to the Kyiv regime become accomplices in the murder of civilians and the destruction of civilian infrastructure."

It comes as Donald Trump has voiced growing frustration with Vladimir Putin after following a call with Russia's warmongering dictator.
Trump, who vowed to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of becoming president, has said he is "not happy" about progress in bringing the conflict to a close.
While Russian and Ukrainian representatives have met for peace talks, Putin's forces have ramped up their brutal bombardments.

Russian drone and cruise missile attacks kill at least two in Ukraine

At least two people were killed overnight as Russia continued to pound Ukraine with hundreds of drones as part of a stepped-up bombing campaign that has further dampened hopes for a breakthrough in efforts to end the more than three-year-old war. Two people died and 14 were wounded when Russian forces attacked the Bukovina area in the Chernivtsi region of southwestern Ukraine with four drones and a missile, regional governor Ruslan Zaparaniuk said on Saturday. He said that the two people died because of falling debris from a drone. A drone attack in Ukraine's western Lviv region wounded six people, regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi said. Three people were wounded in Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine when the city was hit by eight drones and two missiles, mayor Ihor Terekhov said. Russia fired 597 drones and decoys, with 26 cruise missiles, into Ukraine overnight, Ukraine's air force said. Of these, 319 drones and 25 cruise missiles were shot down and 258 decoy drones were lost, likely having been electronically jammed. Russia has been stepping up its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities. Earlier this week, Russia fired more than 700 attack and decoy drones at Ukraine overnight, topping previous nightly barrages for the third time in two weeks and targeting Lutsk near the border with Poland in western Ukraine, a region that is a crucial hub for receiving foreign military aid. Poland's air force scrambled fighter jets in areas bordering Ukraine, Polish officials said. Russia's intensifying long-range attacks have coincided with a concerted Russian effort to break through parts of the roughly 620-mile front line, where Ukrainian troops are under severe pressure. Russia's defence ministry said it shot down 33 Ukrainian drones overnight into Saturday.

Ukraine says Russia fired 623 drones and missiles

Russia fired 597 drones and 26 long-range missiles overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, calling for sanctions to stop Russia's recent record barrages. "Twenty-six cruise missiles and 597 attack drones were launched, of which more than half were 'Shaheds'," Mr Zelensky said, referring to Iranian-made drones. The Ukrainian air force said it had downed 319 Shahed drones and 25 missiles, adding that one missile and about 20 drones hit "five locations". It did not elaborate. Mr Zelensky called on his Western allies to send "more than just signals" to stop the war launched by Russia in February 2022. "The pace of Russian air strikes requires swift decisions and it can be curbed right now through sanctions," he said. Mr Zelensky specifically urged punishment for those who "help Russia produce drones and profit from oil". Oil exports are important for the Russian economy especially in the face of existing Western sanctions.
